Hi all! A (re)-introduction: I'm Tyler, developer of #rayshader and the #rayverse, a collection of R packages for 3D #dataviz and #mapping. Here's one of my greatest hits (now that Bluesky supports videos!): The Earth's submarine fiber optic cable network, visualized in #RStats with #rayrender.

Inspired by @cbassa.bsky.social, I simulated a 2025 keogram for the Netherlands using skymodelr in #RStats. Each strip spans a day, showing seasons and lunar cycles. The package models sunlight, moonlight and atmospheric scattering, with adaptive exposure here to show day and night together.

Here the simulation alternates with Cees’s observations. The red line is just a guide to the Prague model’s twilight limitation: solar sky radiance stops at -4.2 degrees, leaving a gap to the red line at -10 degrees, which overlaps just about perfectly with the original.

@capitalweather.com I saw these isolated "scars" in the clouds last night after the rain passed through before sunset in silver spring: what could cause such aligned localized creases in the clouds? Vortices from aircraft departing from DCA?

Still working out some kinks but I thought I'd share for people in a similar situation. We have a mostly nonverbal autistic kid who can actually do sight-words OK. I realized I could make music videos with exactly his sight-word set and favorite topics using Claude (the model was sonnet 5.5).

This is absolutely insane, I just rendered this effectively 3.1 billion triangles 900 frame 16 sample per pixel 960x540 animation in #RStats last night in 6 hours using the M1 GPU and #rayrender -- it would have taken a WEEK with the CPU renderer. Completely game changing for iterative work

oh my. here's a crazy idea in 2026: using a GPU... for graphics! same laptop. identical result. 15x faster render 🤯 Rendered in #RStats with #rayrender

Voter turnout in Prague City Assembly Elections by districts with #Rstats and #rayshader. I leave interpretation of the elections to my smarter colleagues at Charles University, these are just useless, silly maps:)

I like this view better, from the north-northeast. I think the top of the Ogallala is marked by the change to less dissected interfluves dropping less steeply toward the valley. #rayshader

Canyons eroded in thick loess and underlying Pliocene gravels and Ogallala Group, dropping from a high tableland into the North Platte valley west of Ogallala, Nebraska. View northeast in the area of Dankworth Canyon; shadows simulated for 9AM this morning using #rayshader.

quick screencap of qmd->docx->qmd comment flow in quarto 2/quarto-hub

Carlos Scheidegger@cscheid.net

So check out this PR from @gordonwoodhull.bsky.social over at Quarto 2. Is that import/export from Word preserving comments? Why yes, yes it is indeed 😮 github.com/quarto-dev/q...

People think it's really easy to make a rotating 3D map in R nowadays, but you don't see the hours of practice that #rayshader had to put in behind the scenes to make it look that effortless. (from my upcoming rayshader 1.0 release blog post😀) Created and rendered in #RStats with #rayrender

❗Did I just render Disney’s full Moana Island scene in #RStats with #rayrender? Yes. ‼️Did I import and assemble all 25 GB of scene descriptions in R using {tibble} and {vctrs}, then render it in R? Also yes. 💥Did importing it uncover a bug in R’s garbage collector? SURPRISE! YES!

I originally bought a 64GB M1 mac a few years back for this specific purpose (attempting to render this Moana scene in R one day), and got it for quite the steal. Now I'd have to take out a reverse mortgage to get this much RAM! Thanks Moana!

Ahh, that's better! Nice, clean 3D ggplots with no texture bleeding (because those are real 3D polygons, automatically transformed into the 3D coordinate system of the underlying ggplot!) render_polygons( us_states, data_column_top = "total_pop_15", color = "height" ) #RStats #rayshader

This corner of a children’s coloring placemat has literally no entertainment value, I’m fairly sure it was developed purely to trigger millennial parents and get engagement on social media

Quaternions! Quaternions! Quaternions! Quaternions! Quaternions! Quaternions! ::vomits from motion sickness:: ... Quaternions! Quaternions! Quaternions! #RStats #rayrender

Data: "Do you expect me to publish?" Analyst: "No, Mr. Data: I expect you to perish!" ... Data: "p < 0.05! p < 0.05!" ------------------ “If you torture the data long enough, it will confess to anything” -Ronald H. Coase ------------------ Rendered in #RStats with #rayrender

2019: "I don't want to learn Blender: I'm going to write my own renderer in R, so I never have to use a GUI and can write all my scenes as code!" 2026: "... and then you call raygui(), and you can explore and change your scene without writing any code at all!" 🤷‍♂️ #RStats #rayrender

This rocks!

Here's a neat free procedural rock generator tool that got released earlier this week. This is very cool and very handy! Especially since I just happen to be modeling something at the moment for a hobby project that requires a lot of rocks. tools.kogus.dev/rockstone/

Thrilled to have just presented "Never block, never copy. mirai + mori from Shiny to the cluster" at posit::conf(2026). The slides are available here: shikokuchuo.net/posit2026 mirai: mirai.r-lib.org mori: shikokuchuo.net/mori/ #tidyverse #rshiny #positconf2026

Excited to be at #positconf this year! I'm not giving a talk, but find me to talk about realistic geospatial visualization with #rayshader, lots of cool new improvements to 3D rendering and animation in #RStats with #rayrender, and enhancing {targets} workflows with #tarborist! 👋

Hmm… a frequentist ribbon but no Bayesian ribbon. I guess “well, assuming a weakly informative prior and an LKJ(1) prior on the correlation matrix, we fit four chains with MCMC and…” doesn’t fit on a ribbon. #positconf #rstats

View from the opposite direction, same time and date. Look at how nicely it renders those gullies and small dams in the lower left! I could spend a lot of time on this, but I also want to get out to this area again in October. #rayshader

Visualization of a southern Driftless Area at 8AM on January 1. View to the southwest. Created with #rayshader using render_highquality and skymodel_r. Mostly for my own enjoyment now, but I could make some of these to talk about slope aspect and microclimate, couldn't I?

Finally: #rayshader will soon have the beautiful sunsets made in #RStats I've always dreamed of, along an actual sense of scale for your landscapes, thanks to some big updates I'm pushing to #rayrender and #skymodelr 😀 You can ask me more in Houston at #positconf 👋

One reason I know LLMs won't take over academia is that the simply cannot feel so annoyed by not knowing something, the true essence of an academic

Rayshader: now a realistic "flying through clouds" dream simulator in R with rayrender's new volume rendering! All I need to add now are whooshing air sounds and a faceless clown who slowly chases you throughout the scene—gaining, always gaining. #RStats #rayshader #rayrender #rayverse
