"Creativity is not a problem that needs to be solved!" So says Jenny Williams, formerly of Google and Microsoft, in an insightful interview about ethics, writing, and these so-called intelligent systems people call "AIs" and "agents". And I agree with her. Do you?

I wish there wasn't so much talk about X. Twitter connected people. X spreads lies and hate. Let's move on.

People hate pop-ups.

Adam Bonica@adambonica.bsky.social

I can't stress enough how counterproductive it is for campaign sites to hit visitors with a donation pop-up they have to close before they can see anything. A week out, most visits to these pages are voters trying to make up their minds.

ChatGPT and Claude "chat" with people but they're not people. When we call something intelligent, we're comparing the thing to a person. Call them chatbots.

Is there a way to describe correlation and causation with shorter, more common words? My technical writing brain kicks in during probability and statistics class.

I was a poll worker in Brazil’s election. It was fascinating to see that out of the 190 people who came to vote in my section 80 didn’t vote in the first round and must have realized “Oh shit this is for real”.

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

What if we lived without recommendation algorithms? Maybe we’d be happier and more connected to others.

Against the undermanned Mavs, the Spurs finally had a better night offensively. 45 pts from 3PT 36% accuracy from deep 64 paint pts 34 assists on 48 makes 15 offensive boards, 25 2nd-chance pts 12 turnovers 122 points

Deep investigation of local police, paid by ICE, breaking up families and helping deport a tenth of the population of a small town for extra money paid for by the Federal Government. Heartbreaking story in a town already devastated by flooding and dependent on immigrants for recovery. ❤️‍🩹

Mike Finger@mikefinger.bsky.social

This story (about the town where the Spurs reached out to flood victims last year) is incredible. Every other paragraph is jaw-droppingly screenshottable. Then there's this graphic, which becomes all the more stunning when you realize that it's essentially the work of one guy.

And don’t forget Tarik Biberovic is out too. Seriously though 6 players out is a lot. Hope the healthy Spurs get to rest some players and give minutes to their much deeper bench tonight.

No Flagg, no Kyrie, no Caleb Martin, no Santi Aldama for Dallas tonight vs. Spurs

Firefox user for >20 years, TIL about about:keyboard wonder how long that's been there

Keith Cirkel@keithamus.social

Apropos of nothing, if you're considering switching from a recently deprecated browser and want to try Firefox, I just landed `Copy Tab URL` in nightly - it's not bound by default but a quick visit to `about:keyboard` will let you set it, and also take a glance at the other neat shortcuts we have.

I'm really enjoying Language, Culture, and Society as an introduction to Linguistics. The first part on the nature of language went well. Learned about human language, signed language, animal communication, and nonverbal communication.

The second part of this linguistics class gets into tools for analyzing sounds, words, sentences, meaning, and language in context.

For Computing, Data, and Society, I've had writing assignments weekly on tech's impact on history, intellectual property, benefits and limitations of generative AI, and algorithmic bias. I should put some of that into blog post form.

I got this one, too. We must resist this type of abuse of our information and attention. I hope this causes more backlash on the sender than confusion in the receivers.

I received this email shilling Trump Accounts from the SSA, and now I have an IRS letter shilling TrumpIRA accounts. Wtf is wrong with these people?? This is a misuse of taxpayer funds and a misuse of the govt machinery we built. I want my rep to investigate.

The second essay on Michelle Obama is so much better than the first one on Bill Cosby. I'll keep listening and see what else We Were 8 Years in Power has going on since chapter 2 was so good!

I'm struggling to get through the audio book version of "We Were 8 Years in Power". I think I liked it better hearing Ta-Nehisi Coates narrate Between the World and Me. Also, I enjoy the notes between the essays from @theatlantic.com more than the 1st 2 essays themselves. Should I DNF? #Booksky

If Dylan Harper's 3 point accuracy and attempts are up even a little bit this year it could make a huge difference. 57% won't continue, but about 35% would be great!

Dylan Harper on how confident he is in his shot after hitting 7 of 12 (3 of 6 from deep) for 19 points: "Very confident. I've worked at it all summer, so there's no reason for me to be hesitant. No reason for me to pull back. Biggest thing is just taking the right shots at the right time."

Call this a no-forward lineup. Wemby's a center-ish. Vassell's almost a shooting guard. 3-guard lineup just doesn't go far enough. I mean Wemby is a ball-handler, too.

Jeff McDonald@jmcdonaldsa.bsky.social

Same starters for Spurs tonight: Fox, Castle, Harper, Vassell, Wembanyama. Mitch Johnson says this is the lineup he intends to use for Tuesday's opener vs. OKC.

Are algorithm audits meaningfully fixing issues in algorithmic systems? In our paper at #AIES2026 this week, @davidthewid.bsky.social and I argue that it’s time to deprioritize algorithm audits & instead shift scrutiny to the larger systems of power in which audits sit. 1/n

I could go on and on with this list, but I'll end with one of my mantras, "do less that matters more." AI is a tool of optimization, speed and efficiency. These are not educational values. Telling students they should use AI so they can do more does not help them learn and develop.
