What is the meaning of life? To make someone else's balance sheet go up? No. Who cares about that? Money is a means to whatever end we want. It fundamentally can't be an end in itself. Yet all our political discourse is The Economy, Stupid. What even is "the economy"? It's stuff like this.

You have to laugh at the sheer insanity of Turning Point UK being found to be organising literal contract killings and paid agitation at protests up and down the country and it barely even raises a flicker across the press. If that isn't 'terrorism' on some level I don't really know what is

To the people saying this shows “the Times has lost its mind”: this is how Mel reacted to Black Lives Matter, which actually was about one particular ethic group, unlike what happened in France.

Claxton was enormously affected by his experience of WW1, and then later WW2 veterans. He fully embraced the principle of "building a town fit for heroes" and was adamant that meant creating a town with safe roads/cycling. He specifically said he wanted no-one to survive a war then die on a road.

Stevenage has got some properly nice cycling routes 😍

Peter Berry reposted

Eric Claxton's guiding principle when designing Stevenage was that separating bikes and cars was fine, if: - Their routes ran parallel - For every metre the bikes gave up in gradient, the cars should give up two - If necessary, you make the cars go further not the bikes Because cars have ENGINES

The Conservatives who were in coalition government with the Liberal Democrats in 2010–2015? Those Conservatives? And where is the money for your proposed cut to fuel duty?

Ed Davey@eddavey.libdems.org.uk

Badenoch has spent half her conference making unfunded promises, and half lecturing the country on fiscal responsibility. We’re all still paying the price for Conservative financial mismanagement. Liberal Democrats will act as the firewall stopping her handing No 10 to Farage.

To leave or not to leave. I'll sleep on it, but I really don't see how I can stay in a party that's both voted against some of its own core principles, and (more importantly) has clearly been overtaken by a concerted effort driven by antisemitism.

... and the latter is very obviously in fact a racist movement, the former is, I dunno, depends what you think of 19th century nationalism in general (I probably would not call all such things racist ideologies fwiw), and so there is just ambiguity because different people hear different things?

Not really able to handle Big Debate right now but isn't it just that some people are using "Zionism" to mean "the core proposition of a 19th century nationalist movement i.e. that the Jewish people get a state" some people to mean "the ideology of the present expansionist settler movement"...

His X account shows that he rejects the democratic political process "We will never have a proper political system that truly works for the people ... The sooner people understand that, the sooner real alternatives can be put on the table" There is no disavowal of violence here, just of democracy

An incredibly stupid question, the best response which IMO is "So what if it isn't? The post Zack is standing for is Member of the United Kingdom Parliament, not London borough councillor or AM. Foreign policy will be squarely within his competence as an MP and leader of a national party."

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

BBC Host: "Zacks talked a lot about Gaza. Thats not a local issue is it. Thats not going to improve peoples lives there" Saying that genocide is bad & we shouldn't be funding, arming or supporting the regime doing it. What a terrible person! How dare he, right?

Meanwhile a thousand+ Reform councillors are elected on a platform of "stop the boats" which is way, way outside local government competence. Why doesn't anyone hold their feet to the fire over that?

I remember having a similar reaction when I visited a Catholic church in Munich, absolutely crammed full of gilding, and immediately realised why Protestant churches were so much simpler. As a Methodist, spending that much wealth on a church instead of good causes felt like an affront to God.

Possibly longest thread I've ever written. Once again, despite all evidence, some folks, closely related to the 'bus industry' want to blame cycling for slowing down London buses. tl;dr: this is a lie & it's cars wot done it. It is not buses v cycling v walking or wheeling. It's all of us v cars...

London Cycling Campaign@londoncycling.bsky.social

Buses v cycling? A 🧵... Too often, the bus 'industry' defaults to attack cycling as cause of buses (in London) getting slower & slower. Good to see that somewhat countered here: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/ng-i... by @theguardian.com data team. 1. Bus speeds dropping is a "global problem"... 1/13

'Lane rental' means if you are a water or other utility company working on TfL's 'red routes' you pay daily for roadworks or you can get a 'waiver' if you're going above & beyond delivering safe routes through for walking, wheeling & cycling. TfL has been doing this for years & it works... 5/13
