At the recent vet appointment, I learned a couple important things: 1: My cat is not in fact a kitten, she's just very small. 2: Due to this, it is entirely possible, if not likely, we share a birthday. 3: By likely, I mean we definitely share the same month of birth.

This is the core problem with the Buttigieg "we have to find common ground" framing. The question isn't sports, it's whether trans people will be allowed to exist as trans in public. Everything else—politically and strategically—is downstream from that.
