yes, and this all plays into the “good bones, poor execution” thing - you could tell good stories in the prequel sandbox, and people did meanwhile I have negative interest in other media set during the sequels and nobody is really trying

imo there won’t be the same level of sequel apologia just because there’s a culture war split over the last jedi, you won’t see a cohesive defense of the whole trilogy (I will probably get in a fistfight with someone who defends rise of skywalker though)

but also, yes, as folks have pointed out this is not revisionism! "the prequels were good, actually" is the revisionist take, fueled by a combination of "kids raised on the prequels grew up" and "the sequels ended in misery and ruination" at the time people thought they were bad!

AOTC was easily the worst star wars movie until rise of skywalker and this has been the critical and fandom consensus on the movie since it came out phantom menace and revenge of the sith have good bits, AOTC really doesn't

the thing the prequels have going for them is that the bones of the story are actually quite good, the collapse of a rotting republic into fascism is compelling and obviously extremely plausible the execution is just... poor

there are two kickass parts of episode one: the podrace (yes, it's actually good) and the duel of the fates, which is the best lightsaber fight in the entire series the rest of the movie is, charitably, bad
