Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

The second problem with "usefulness" as a primary concern is that it pushes all of the harms (to self, to others, to society, to the planet) outside the frame. In other words, given all of the harms, even if the software weren't janky, there would still be plenty of reasons to oppose it. >>

my take on this remains consistent: far more americans are bigoted on this front than I'd like, but transphobia is a luxury belief it's the kind of thing you can get people mad about if and only if they don't have real problems to worry about, and there is no shortage of real problems right now

Fascinating tidbit in this interview with former Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont), he says that Texas Republicans anti-transgender ads aren't "resonating." feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

the thing about the "you're out of touch if you haven't heard this song" discourse is that radio has been dead for well over a decade. it's extremely normal to listen to a lot of music but still never hear the songs at the top of the charts.

Regardless of your opinions of the Middle East, it’s pretty amazing that in the year 2026, former Angles utilityman Mark McLemore was touring with Ed Sheeran. Wait … I am getting new information. I’m being told that …

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

the republicans are wide open on several fronts, historically unpopular president, unpopular war, record high gas. any dem throwing trans people under the bus at this moment is doing it because they want to. not like they need to, do they. even if it worked as a vote winner, which it doesn't

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.

I have only once ever seen an antivaxxer change their mind. Sympathetic understanding is not what did it. All of their friends spending a year bluntly and repeatedly telling them that they were being a murderously destructive idiot is what did it.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

The media relentlessly promotes the narrative that progressives are too mean to anti-vaxxers and we must bring them around with compassion. This isn't true and isn't helping. The more public sympathy you show them, the more empowered they are in their beliefs. www.statnews.com/2026/08/19/s...
