Hot take! Regarding signed vs unsigned indices: 🧵 I'm pretty convinced that unsigned should only be used for things that don't represent numbers at all, like hashes, bit masks, and handles. Anything else should be signed, except in the rare case when you really need that last bit.

Even enums I would put into the signed bucket because you sometimes want to do math on them or index using them. (it depends, frankly. Sometimes enums are used as flags, i.e. used in tandem with bitflags, and then unsigned is a better fit, I think)

For indices one way to think about... "but you never need negative values" ...is... "well you don't need the abundance of numbers that you now gained on the other side either". Unsigned just slides the available range around, it doesn't make fewer values invalid.

Fun talk about USD! I feel less worried already. Btw @rystorm.com you had it open in Godot - how do you find Godot's support? IIRC there's a fork or separate plugin or something for it but there's no support in base Godot.

I gave a lightning talk at Blendercon! It's about USD, and how you don't have to worry about it!! It's easy! Catch the recording here at 44:02

Well... Almost no-one can make a world with millions of simulated NPCs. Only @vuntracity.bsky.social and Cities Skylines comes to mind. Oblivion does it with ~4000 NPCs. They are/were pioneers in what is still basically an unexplored game design space... And we shouldn't do it? Why no curiosity?

Robert Yang@radiatoryang.bsky.social

if you can't make a giant 3D sandbox city with millions of NPCs walking around, that's actually good, because now you'll design an actual game instead

I have a hard time figuring out Obra Dinn characters. Some are easy like you hear their name shouted before they die. But like, am I supposed to see someone's hat or apron and be like oh yeah that's a 2nd mate's hat or a doctor's apron? Should I look at them and be like "totally a chinese dude"?

In Golden Idol it always feels like I'm always making logical deductions but in Obra it feels like I need to know how boat operations worked 200 years ago obscured by an art style that is amazing and perfect but also makes me go "...who the hell am I looking at?"

Crimson Diamond didn't hook me unfortunately. This thing adventure games do where you need to go and talk to everyone first instead of starting with action doesn't really work for me. Perhaps because I'm terrible with names, because I've spent this time talking to people and I remember no one.

Sometimes plans don't go according to plans! We wanted to take the Tides in one direction but due to other life factors we put it on pause for a bit and now that I've returned I decided to do some (other) core stuff first: Large world support ✅ and now camera improvements (needed for streaming).

I just published the notes of the Tool Design Roundtables & OpenUSD Roundtables from GDC 2026: Tool Design: rystorm.com/blog/tool-de... OpenUSD: rystorm.com/blog/openusd... These roundtables are always a great way to learn what the industry is doing, what is going well, and what is not going well

rystorm.comNotes of the Tool Design Roundtables at GDC 2026 — Robin-Yann Storm, Workflow ConsultantWhat topics were brought up, and what was discussed, at the Tool Design Roundtables of GDC 2026?

There were hunter-gatherer societies for 1 million years according to wikipedia, before a single one of them I guess decided to try to take one of the plants producing tasty things, storing it, and putting it into the ground to see if it would grow again. Galaxy brain move if there ever was one.

Great article/interview :)

Almost absurdly reasonable and nuanced take from Doctorow that still boils down to "AI centaurs basically fine, limited; AI reverse centaurs unwanted capitalist orgy of self-destruction" arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026...

In gamedev, we're used to sound coming from single points in space, but how do we handle sound coming from an irregular shape? In this article (with plenty code snippets), I go into details with the Point Cloud Sound technique I'm using for water and foliage: blog.runevision.com/2026/06/poin...

Quite often when using tools you don't really get enough information about what system resources it is using. This is something that specially bugs me when using resource heavy apps, so from the next version of Ark VCS it tracks all its resources in real time. #gamedev

Here's a real proper pro #gamedev tip. Emojis and all! If you are: - adding a thing to a list in a file (C-includes, list of abilities or enemies, functions...) - and the order isn't important ⭐Add the thing alphabetically! 💩NOT AT THE END. Why? There are three very good reasons!

View full thread

2. If you and your gamedev colleague both add an entry (A and B) to the end of the list, you are 100% 💯 guaranteed to get a merge conflict. And you aren't necessarily the one who will fix it. And - see point 1 - they may not know if A goes before B or not. Alphabet has a ~1/26 conflict chance.

3. Alphabetical order is easy to do (everyone knows and recognizes the alphabet), and is obviously either: - totally irrelevant, so you don't need to think about why it's that way (maybe the order of abilitites shown in game comes from their level) - the correct order, in which case it's easy to do.

1. If you add things to the end as you go, the list will be in random order. However, to whoever is reading the list, there is NO WAY TO KNOW if the order is random or if there is an order but you can't figure it out. Especially true for C includes, where you *can* have weird interdependencies.

This is amazing. First page of how to build worlds. "Games don't need REALISM with unnecessary details! That's just excessive. No, something simpler will suffice. Here we model air currents as they flow around a planet at various degrees from the equator..." 🥰 #worldbuilding #procgen
