Ming the Merciless is empathetic, creative, and an animal lover.

Bane is empathetic, creative, and an animal lover. Who else is empathetic, creative, and an animal lover? I would like to hear of others who are empathetic, creative, and an animal lover.

True story: I was confused by Lovecraft's descriptions of alien architecture until I learned that "cyclopean" meant "huge, as if built by giants" and not "having one eye"

Kris 🎃 HORRORchild@direkris.itch.io

Lovecraft: It was indescribable Me: OK Lovecraft: I shall proceed to describe it, using a lot of words ending in “-ness” and “-ish” Me: Fine Lovecraft: I don’t know what cyclopean means Maybe it’s not indescribable maybe you just suck at writing

The music in these games is so beautiful and this concert looks like it was amazing, wish I'd been able to see it... That said I'm not going to listen to this in full until I've finished Hades II because I don't want even musical spoilers!

it cannot actually be ignored or danced around that the closure of BioWare came so soon after the Saudi and Jared Kushner acquisition of EA. they absolutely did take the studio making EA’s broadly queerest games out back and shoot it old yeller style. do not let yourself or colleagues ignore that

Got a clearly AI-generated email today about one of my books. How did I know it was AI-generated? Partly because of the sloptastic prose that took several paragraphs to say nothing, but mostly because the book in question was written by someone with my name in *1846*.

The 1846 book is listed on my Goodreads author page. Back when I *used* Goodreads I jumped through the hoops to get the other John Ayliff's books removed split off, but there doesn't seem much point doing that again if they're just going to come back.

I'll be honest, there is nothing more demoralizing to me than devs saying "I know AI is built on theft, and anti-labour, and harms the environment, but I'm going to use it anyway bc I don't believe individual choices matter". This is how a movement fails. www.molleindustria.org/blog/future-...

Back a ton of comic kickstarters at the "have yourself drawn into the comic" tier and then claim that means they all share a character and take place in the same universe.

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

This weekend my D&D group finished a long-running campaign (started pre-pandemic) and I actually got pretty emotional that it was over. So yeah I think the people who made the game should be protected from their employer trying to claim ownership of their personal creative work, etc.

Knowing you're killing the habitability of the planet and doing it anyway is far, far more evil than killing the habitability of the planet because you're too stupid to understand what you're doing.

JRR Tolkien: You paint that picture of the key scene from the Two Towers where Frodo and Sam fight Gollum? Donato Giancola: Sure did, Ron, real fuckin' sexy just like you asked. JRRT: What.

What must it have felt like to wear this hat, surrounded by bronze age sun cultists. You'd be wizard-priest-king of the world. There would not be a single doorway you could fit through.

The extraordinary 3,000 year-old ‘Berlin Gold Hat’! One of four known cone-shaped golden ‘hats’ from ancient Europe. Sheet gold decorated with bands of solar and lunar motifs, which may represent calendars according to latest research. Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology

I'm enjoying this season of Strange New Worlds, but... if you're going to do half a season of genre pastiche episodes, why not tie them together with a single explanation? Different genre each week, and the season arc is figuring out why you're in a different genre each week. #StarTrekSNW

It also means it's using physical descriptions actions and objects to convey mood and pacing. There's one bit where it spends like a page describing Sam Spade rolling a cigarette in exacting detail, conveying a thoughtful and focused mood without ever getting in his head.

The Maltese Falcon (the novel, which entered the public domain this year) is written in a really interesting way. It's in the third person and it's all external. We're told what characters say and do, but never what they're thinking or feeling. standardebooks.org/ebooks/dashi...

standardebooks.orgThe Maltese Falcon, by Dashiell Hammett - Free ebook downloadFree epub ebook download of the Standard Ebooks edition of The Maltese Falcon: A detective becomes embroiled in a series of murders and intrigues, all seemingly related to a mysterious figurine.

Combine that with a story about people who are constantly trying to deceive one another, and it becomes a puzzle just to work out moment to moment what they characters are thinking and what they're trying to accomplish. We don't even really know the protagonist's goal until the very end.

I love the idea of a live-action Dan Dare TV show but this looks like it would have been way too ambitious for the technology of the time...so perhaps getting some some sci-fi artists to do cool concept art and then cancelling the project was the best outcome.
