I love to torture myself seeking fine-grained understanding of events over which I have no control. Note that I will unfollow anyone posting AI slop unless it's in a post disparaging AI slop.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Flávio Bolsonaro had his passport confiscated by the Brazilian fed police as his brother Eduardo told him to flee to the US. He is tied to paramilitary gangs, is being investigated & lost his legislative immunity when he left the Senate to run for president. paydayreport.com/brazilian-fe...

Lessons to learn, folks.
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

i get why it's written this way, and that this story is somewhat unique, but it's still really frustrating to see addiction framed as habit in media in the year 2026. surely there's a better way to write about these cases next time
A former director of Florida’s problem gambling hotline was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison after prosecutors said he stole nearly $1.5 million from a previous employer to feed his gambling habit.
