I have a lot of respect for Dr. Devereaux generally (and I’d love to read his thoughts on the Golden Age arc of Berserk), but this is bullshit. bsky.app/profile/bret... 1/13

Honestly, I am pretty frustrated that there isn't more discussion, particularly on the right (including the neo-con right) about the *divergence* of US and Israeli interests here. A democratic Iran, while not a friend, would be a victory for the USA and long-term probably a catastrophe for Israel.

The core issue in the discourse here is, a lot of people with opinions on Israel don’t actually know any Israelis and don’t know why Israelis do anything. And worse, a lot of those people don’t *want* to know. That’s really it. 13/13

P.S. What really gets me is, Dr. Devereaux should know better than to say things like “a democratic Iran would be bad for Israel because they wouldn’t be able to push for sanctions”, because it elevates operational concerns over strategic ones. acoup.blog/2020/06/19/c...

Take the Islamic Republic’s ideology out of the picture, and suddenly that stops looking like a notable risk. People start thinking, “You know, if the PA can get its act together, and actually exert control over the WB and Gaza… maybe?” 11/13

It’d still be a long way from an actual end to the occupation, because there’d be tons still to argue over, and removing most/all of the Israelis from Ariel & Maale Adumim would take years. But it would give Israelis hope that peace was possible if they DID work toward a negotiated withdrawal. 12/13

That is, they’re afraid Hamas, or another Iranian proxy, would take over the West Bank and use it as a platform for missile attacks. Which would be an unholy nightmare for Israeli civilians—it’d mean most of the population living under conditions like Sderot or Ashkelon. 9/13

Tel Aviv is like 20 km from the Green Line; that means about 30 seconds’ warning time. Less in the suburbs. And in Jerusalem, it’d be worse. 10/13

If Iran doesn’t care anymore, suddenly Likud, and the rest of the Right, have a much harder time making their case to voters on security grounds! It’d be the inverse of how the Israeli Left collapsed after the Second Intifada. 7/13

Palestinian statehood suddenly becomes a lot more plausible too, because the biggest reason Israelis oppose a full withdrawal from the West Bank has been that they remember what happened after the Gaza withdrawal in 2005. 8/13

The IR doesn’t do this for Palestinians’ sake. They do it because ever since the revolution, they have been *openly committed to Israel’s destruction*. An Iran that was purely self-interested, caring about its own GDP first and foremost, would be the biggest win for Israel in decades. 5/14

And it would massively reshape Israeli politics, because the #1 argument that’s kept Likud in power is “Only we can keep you safe from Iran and its proxies.” 6/13

Israelis would be *dancing in the streets* at that news. Hugging each other while crying. The whole nine yards. The reaction would be “Hallelujah! After almost 50 years, it’s finally over!” Because “rival” would be such an improvement over the past decades that there’s just no comparison. 3/13

One of the protestors’ slogans has been “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life for Iran.” What they’re mad about is the government pissing away massive amounts of resources on militant anti-Israel proxies, and on things like the biggest ballistic missile attack ever, for no clear benefit to Iran. 4/13

Suppose the regime was overthrown, with democratically accountable leaders installed. Let’s grant his comment that many Iranians are antisemitic—we might imagine, then, that the new government’s attitude toward Israel would be “We don’t like them Jews, and we consider Israel a major rival.” 2/13

The entire thing is designed to make you simultaneously feel like you're a Good Person encouraging craft & indulge in contempt; the point is to get to call someone a loser. It's mean girl shit. If you think you're better bc you worked at it, just say so, don't do this "for your own good" thing.

If you have Angelfire or Tripod webpages, or Angelfire email, back it up now. A shutdown within the next 27 days is coming but they have not given us an exact time yet.

Hey if you still have an Angelfire or Tripod site, or if you like one, now is the time to back it up, like, urgently

I think for some people, the definition of antisemitism is very simple: 1. Antisemitism is when swastika. 2. Antisemitism is when Gringotts. And never any other time. Unless you find a Jew to blame for it.

The Got Milk? advertising campaign, in its focus on the hazards of lacking the advertised product, can be considered a descendant of Jim Henson's commercials for Wilkins Coffee. In this essay I will

Fun fact to make you feel old: Sentai Filmworks (2008-) has now lasted longer than AD Vision (1994-2009) (I’m ignoring the zombie shell company ADV currently exists as)

What I wish people in America understood is that being far right/authoritarian is not just a white Christian thing, although that is by far the most dangerous form in the country. It's a way of imagining how your group will structure itself societally, and applies to just about every demographic.

Every time there’s a big shocking news story, we seem to collectively have to relearn the lessons of consuming information and identifying disinformation online. That knowledge is not persistent.

Copied from what I posted on Twitter: Finally back online, but my family and I have been following the news. My aunt and uncle are visiting from Israel. My great-aunt and -uncle live there. So do my first cousin, his family, and a whole lot of my second cousins and their family.

Kaiji was a manga inspired by the struggles Japan faced during its recession in the 90s. It's a story I'm sure is just as relatable now as it was then. Kaiji nearly crumbled under the pressure gambling with his life on the line. I loved imagining that same kinda of stress playing mere board games.

"If you were someone worth caring about, instead of the ridiculous and contemptible person you are, you'd have so much ~fiery determination~ that your trauma wouldn't be able to ~hold you back~. You're just a weak, pathetic loser." Sigh…

Still keeping up with the "write 300+ words a day on my Disney project, six days a week" habit I started Sunday before last. Looks like my average is 502 words a day, or ~3000 words a week. Not bad -- if I keep it up, it'd mean a pace of one entry every 3-4 weeks.

I typed "ten" in a Chrome text input with the Japanese keyboard and the second autocomplete option was "tensai koyaku", so I guess my computer knows I like Kana Arima at least.

The biggest enabler for creativity is stability. I wish that was made more central to the creative narrative. Figure out what your specific needs are to limit stressors and enable "boring" time and work to achieve that as hard as you're practicing your art.
