"But the people refused to listen to Samuel. 'No!' they said. 'We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.'" 1 Samuel 8:19–20

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Rick Scott on AI: "Congress can't regulate this. We can't get election security passed or pass a budget, so we're not gonna be the ones to do it. It's gonna have to be done through the administration with talking to these AI companies."

Also the participants knew this wasn't a real prison and they had signed up for a LARP. Watch me do a study on how Stanford is full of vampires.

Amyville Hoyrror@amyhoy.bsky.social

the stanford prison experiment was corrupted before it began — it was recruited with an ad saying it wanted volunteers “for a study into prison life” which already biases the participant self-selection the guards were also directly coached and encouraged to be worse

Also THERE WERE NO ENDPOINTS. Zimbardo didn't define what and how he was measuring. He just let it run for a while, wrote down a bunch of anecdotes, and then announced he was scared and closed up shop. This guy makes me so mad.

I'm tired of people saying "Silicon Valley" when they mean like "the inhabitants of Larry Ellison's hot tub". Trump got 28% in Santa Clara County in 2024 and that's a relatively conservative area. *Billionaires* in SV tend to support Trump, as do billionaires everywhere.

Rank and file tech workers vote overwhelmingly Democratic. They lost finance guys.

I mean, the point isn't to create jobs, it's to produce a service. But data centers are unusual in doing almost nothing for the community they're located in. *Your* economic development is still a Dollar General and three vape shops; at best, the data center is an inert box.

Targeting a food subsidy "just to the people who need it" is nonsense. Everyone needs food. The administrative burden to separate out "people who need it" (1) denies aid to people whose needs are not legible to the bureaucracy, and (2) wastes money that we could spend buying more food.

Catherine Rampell@crampell.bsky.social

Hear me out. What if instead of selling food below cost to all comers at taxpayer expense, then using more taxpayer dollars to subsidize private companies that can't compete, we had a program targeting nutritional assistance just to the people who needed it, as a sort of supplement?

Nor do they want a nurturing mother-figure to care for their needs. Their ideal is the sugar daddy, or maybe the senior frat brother: someone who values them only for their willingness to humiliate themselves.

I think @govandybeshear.bsky.social should just appoint a Dem to fill McConnell’s seat. It would force proof of life, and the state law that stripped him of that power should be challenged in court. I’m sure Thune would refuse to seat the appointee, but I think it’s a fight worth having. BE BOLD!

Well, what's the purpose of a business? If you have the idea that it involves serving customers, then Trump businesses are shit. If it's purely about extracting wealth from customers to feed yourself, then selling overpriced garbage is good business. 1/

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

One thing I'll never understand is the perception of Trump as a "successful businessman." His reputation has *always* been "cheap shit," from the vodka to the steaks to the airlines and, of course, the casinos that lost money despite being run as cheaply as possible and never paying subcontractors.

The casinos lost money but it wasn't *his* money, that's what the bankruptcy was for. In this mindset, making someone else eat the loss is good business and you should do it whenever you can. And he's not the only one who thinks this way. 2/

There's a reason the stereotypical Trump voter is "Car dealership owner in Miami". It's a common attitude in the more sales-oriented kind of small business: good business is when I hustle to get a bigger slice than anyone else.

We have a new message for Democrats: attack attack attack. Trump is corrupt, he’s butchered the economy, and his DOJ operates like mob lawyers. And every voter knows it. So stop looking backward. Stop with the endless focus groups. This isn't complicated. He’s weak. Finish him.

The libertarian rhetoric I grew up on relied a lot on the caricature of "the statists", who just think the state should meddle in things on general principle, like the mirror universe version of libertarians. And it turns out some of these guys really exist.

Jacob T. Levy@jacobtlevy.bsky.social

just for one second, a president who was interested in self-enrichment and whose idea of what helped/ hurt the American people was reduced to "what helps/ hurts me, my feelings, and my family;" a Senate that reflexively confirmed his appointees; and "independent" commissions that aren't. 2/

It must have been great back then when nobody misused guns, Mr. Kennedy

FactPost@factpostnews.bsky.social

RFK Jr: We had lots of guns when we were kids. Kids brought guns to school and were encouraged to do so. And nobody was walking into schools and shooting people. There are many things that could explain this. One is the dependence on psychiatric drugs.

Time for Judge Cooper to rent a lift truck and take the letters down. There's due process, and then there's letting people dick you around forever.

Liz Dye@lizdye.bsky.social

In her opposition, Rep. Beatty notes that "These forfeited arguments, which are meritless, are obviously no basis for a stay pending appeal." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

What gets me about this is that usually, a reporter asking you for evidence is a gift. They're giving you space to lay out your case to the public. But that only works if you're not a fucking liar.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

WOW - Trump crashes out & cuts his interview w/ Welker short as she presses him on his lack of evidence for claiming elections are rigged "You're either crooked or you're stupid. I've had enough. Thank you darling," he tells her" "I traveled all the way to Wisconsin for this interview," she pleads

For those not aware of this: IHOPKC: their founder was kicked out in 2023 after admitting to a bunch of sexual abuse. See www.kansascity.com/news/local/a....

kansascity.comWoman says IHOPKC founder groomed, sexually abused her when she was 14 in the 1980sThe allegations, which some say are the most damning to surface yet about the well-known charismatic ministry leader and come after four decades of silence, are the first claims that involve sexual ab...
Siri Dahl@siridahl.com

Laila Mickelwait, btw, is an evangelical nightmare of a human being who works for Exodus Cry, a religious anti-porn and anti-sex work organization with ties to fundamentalist anti-LGBTQ church called IHOP. They’re fucking grifters.

Turns out there are California laws against kidnapping. if they're not going to identify themselves a state could always presume that they are not federal agents at all and let them prove their identity later.

Watch, this will be the next Gulf of America / Department of War bullshit loyalty test. We'll get an executive order titled "Addressing Risks From Disloyal Use Of Percentages".

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

RFK Jr: "President Trump has a different way of calculating percentages. If you have a $600 drug and you reduce it to $10, that's a 600% reduction."

Also--you guys know how 25A works, right? The President can say "no I ain't" and then *a supermajority of Congress* would need to overrule him. The only reason to prefer it over impeachment is if you want to blame the Cabinet, instead of Congress, when it falls.

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

Also, hoping the lady who says Obama is guilty of treason, the guy who thinks Trump is Jesus, the lady sleeping with her security detail and who drinks on the job, and the guy who harvests raccoon penises will vote the president mentally unfit for office doesn't seem like the soundest strategy.

The line he's upset about is "even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood" and it is the Pope quoting Isaiah quoting God.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson on the Pope: "If you wade into political waters, you should expect some political response & the Pope has received some. Frankly I was taken a bit aback by him saying something about 'those who engage in war, Jesus doesn't hear their prayers' or something. There's 'just war' doctrine.'"

The meta-idiocy of it: rather than getting real results by playing madman, a real madman conceals the unreality of his results (due to his really being a madman) by playing at only playing at being a madman. Which he has the disinfotainment savvy, riding the madness, to manage.

Daniel Drezner@dandrezner.bsky.social

I'm just a boy, standing in front of the foreign policy community, asking them to stop describing Trump avoiding the single-dumbest policy option in favor of a still-very-stupid policy option as an example of the Madman Theory yielding results. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/the-beclow...
