I’ve just read this Guardian review, and it is absolutely glorious. Take 5 minutes to read it. You will not regret it.

...and the one that starts “Reviewing someone’s first novel, it is customary to be polite about it, to find things to praise in it. So let me say straight away that James Thackara’s The Book Of Kings is printed on very nice paper...” and I implore you to read it all—especially the last line

This a major addition for me! No longer forgetting why I can’t publish in a new browser, and makes it much easier to get someone new set up in the admin. Some great new features recently, I’m finding it hard to keep up with them…

v0.252.0 makes the Publish Changes button work out of the box on GitLab. It now creates a CI/CD pipeline with your own access token, even when the latest commit has `[skip ci]`, so editors no longer need to enter a deploy hook URL.

Maybe it's just me, but when AI experts are still telling us it's important to include things like "Never invent facts, numbers, or sources" for AI, there's an issue with the tool itself.

Cloudflare Data Explorer shows the amount of russian bot traffic has dropped to 49% after Ukraine struck a yandex data center.

It was 90s day at the Barnardos charity shop today - these three CDs for £1 each... I already had the Madonna album as low-quality digital from 25 years ago, but at one pound was worth the upgrade!

It’s a long time ago, so I’m not sure of the exact date, but round about now marks 30 years since I got my first job building websites - a pioneer on the wild frontier of the early web at Future Publishing…

And they keep coming. I’m sure unidentified bodies in 60s UK were not referred to as John or Jane Doe 😣 I’m almost minded to write to the publisher. But that does seem a little over-pedantic…

Oh, and apparently they had paramedics too, rather than basic ambulance attendants 😖

Sometimes a book jolts you out of it with a blatant anachronism. Case in point: an arrest being made in 1968 with the full modern police caution, which wasn’t introduced until the 90s. Granted, the author is an American now living in the UK, but a UK editor should have picked up on it…

...but wanted to take full control. So, aided by Claude, I set it up on a Pi 5 connected to a 2TB SSD that I had. Fast local access on my LAN, and accessible externally through a Cloudflare tunnel. Add in NaviBeats as a great native app on all my devices (inc. CarPlay), and everything is golden!

As the Pi and SSD seemed to have spare capacity, I have now also added Audiobookshelf to host and serve all my audiobooks (liberated using Libation!). Yet to decide on an app, but Still is an early front-runner. I'm thinking a blog post might be called for to aid anyone wanting to do similar...

Now playing: Live and Let Die, original soundtrack, on 7.5ips reel-to-reel. An incredibly clean copy (and box) for a 50+ year old tape - and it sounds great! #NowPlaying #MusicSky #ReelToReel

Most words become classier when you stick ‘royal’ in front of them but in the case of ‘correspondent’ it has the opposite effect.

It’s the 366th anniversary today of this ridiculous historical shaggy dog story

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

Well, if it’s 16 August, it must be the 365th anniversary of William Harrison disappearing from Chipping Campden, which led to the hanging of three people for his murder, one of whom was still hanging in a gibbet when William strolled back into town two years later. Yes, it’s time for

I can't believe that this obvious front for money-laundering criminal lowlifes has been allowed to open on our High Street. And right next to a barber shop that gets used by young kids, too. Disc race.

In Bristol, supporting The Strsnglers. (The other support act was Wilko Johnson. Definitely got my money’s worth that night…)

Very important statement On the Clacton-by-election To clear up matters for Everyone. Because we are politically neutral It would be wrong for us to Name any candidate who Favours CEEFAX returning And it would be Childish to find a way of Embedding a subliminal message here.

Went to B&Q earlier; employee at the entrance saying "no fans, no air conditioners". Various people inside asking staff for fans and ACs. Yet more wandering around on the phone, "no, they haven't got any..." We're really not cut out for hot weather as a nation...

Here's an easter egg in the new Lego Batman that I think all of you will REALLY appreciate. It's so good, I had to make a video.

After losing Lawrie two weeks ago, today we said goodbye to our beautiful, brave boy Jethro, who is now chasing swallows on the other side. We knew it was coming, but losing them both so close together hits so hard. Broken doesn't even start to describe how we feel... 💔

“I said it’s good of Nigel Farage to speak out about the murder of Henry Nowak. What did I say Roy?” “You said he’s a cynical piece of shit who’s exploiting a tragedy to spread hatred and division”

Can’t believe it’s a week since we lost little Lawrie… we think he was about 16, and gave us a number of scares, but always bounced back. But this time we couldn’t help him, and x-rays showed lungs riddled with cancer too. 😢 It still feels like it can’t have happened…

"I said it seems unlikely that Nigel Farage would take £1 million to throw an election then another £5 million to become an MP. What did I say Roy?" "You said he definitely did because the grifting little shit would do anything for cash"

This prompted me to question the definition of "poem": "a piece of writing that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language to evoke meanings beyond literal interpretations. It typically employs poetic devices and structures to create emotional and intellectual responses." Hmmm...

Regret to report that there has been an outbreak of space poetry, and it’s only going to encourage the Vogons.
