Wrote a thing on why we should have interactive lists on the web: sarahmhigley.com/writing/inte... If anyone has their own interactive list use cases that aren't covered, send them to me! I'm putting together an ARIA spec PR this month.

sarahmhigley.comThe web needs interactive lists | Sarah HigleyA plea to developers: if this gets created, let's not fuck it up. This is a slightly more spec-heavy post than usual, but hopefully still useful.

Steve has released the chat that we had about 2 months ago as a podcast episode. Do with this information what you will.

Currently reviewing buttons that were nested inside of hyperlinks so the hyperlinks would “look like buttons” Good job everyone. Drain a lake to make a ball of dumb

I'm helping a former client of mine source candidates for a fulltime remote developer position, based in the US! I'd love to continue working with them but I can't due to my location. You'd be working on Audiom, an audio-based map viewer that allows blind and low vision people to access maps.

Well, GitHub is down again (day that ends in y), but when it is back up: New Repositories now have a new default Issue label for "Accessibility". This update addresses a longstanding gap and helps to normalize accessibility as a primary consideration.

Watching the local town zoning board meeting for reasons I don’t need to get into. But the current topic is how ducks are just better pets & that more duck pets should be allowed & why are there any other channels but this in tv? People arguing for the need for more duck pets. Tax dollars at work.

How do I know the human race is doomed? Because the best we could think up for indicating a smoke alarm was close to losing its battery was having it make a noise that seems to come from all directions in the house so you never know which smoke alarm is chirping and oh my fucking god it’s 1:25 am

The 11th WebAIM Screen Reader Users Survey is open until 31 August: https://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey11/ If you use a screen reader, it'll take about 10 minutes to contribute to the body of knowledge around screen readers, which ones are used, and how.

Welcome to the @scottohara.me show #a11y #accessibility #APIs #ux #ai #webStandards html5accessibility.com/stuff/2026/0...

Everyone is trying to be fast in getting their AI product to market. And by going fast, it’s not only breaking things but making y’all look fucking foolish.

It used to be that I would need to argue with developers over what is required by aria / wcag Now I get to fight with LLMs that are parroting a11y best practices (or just common inaccurate a11y advice) at me that aren’t applicable for the context It’s Friday. Time to f right off

point of clarification I've been able to produce good results with LLMs, because I know my shit (and if i don't, i ask / say so) LLMs - even a11y LLMs - are not always trained by people who know their shit. _That_ is the problem, imo.

lol websites that put up a paywall overlay but don’t know shit about accessibility so I can use a screen reader to read all the content behind their would-be modal dialogs Again. Lol.

Hey #accessibility #a11y #inclusiveDesign folks: you still have until the end of this month (31 May 2026) to propose a presentations for this year's #id24 in September inclusivedesign24.org/2026/ Reminder: as it's a global event, we'd also be delighted to have talks in languages other than English.

The Accessibility Conformance Testing (ACT) Task Force has published its rules, letting you filter automated rules: www.w3.org/WAI/standard... It’s only partial coverage of 31% of SCs: adrianroselli.com/2025/04/auto... Automation is good, but limited. Understand those limits. #accessibility #a11y

Initial prototype of a `<toolbar>` element is coming along. Largely piggybacks off the focusgroup code so it's actually quite simple to do. Lots to discuss and tweak before it's finished but got to start somewhere.

Friendly reminder to use aria-label as a last resort. Use a visual label if you can! And if you need to use an aria-label to add supplementary text to already visual text, make sure the full visual text is included in the aria-label, at the start of the string.
