I see we have a Nutcracker in the UK now...fingers crossed for a bit more of an irruption. Back in '68 there were apparently 315 that turned up www.sciencebase.com/science-blog... (Edited public domain photo from Andrew Agafonoff)

You get to a certain age, and it seems everything pushed in front of you from will services and funeral ads is about your imminent demise.. Even the nature recording apps are at it...sheesh... Well, if you can't beat 'em: www.sciencebase.com/science-blog...
@imsepidemiology.bsky.social Proud to be a participant in the Fenland Study since January 2012. I'm now in a cohort beta testing their remote health monitoring programme with a Pixel 2 watch and an obligation as my month in that test comes to an end to annotate my heartbeat records!

I wonder if AI ID apps could be better trained to spot very faint distinctions, although it's possible that there aren't any and that these three will always have to be aggregated unless gen det/DNA/larval heritage are known. www.sciencebase.com/science-blog...

@observation.org Is it a little insider joke that you throw in Woolly Mammoth as an occasional ID? I had a photo of a Large Wainscot moth, which was given 28% certainty that it was a Woolly Mammoth, and 10% that it was a Eurasian Beaver!!! www.sciencebase.com/science-blog...

One final sprint to save a landscape - £28m secured, £2m to go! Donation matching until the end of the month - the Wildlife Trusts are so close to buying the largest chunk of the UK offered for sale in 30 yrs. Landscape-scale protection, to hold a 40-mile wide nature corridor together for wildlife.
Can't wait for the self-replicant AI bots to infect my toaster, they might help it pop up when the toast's actually ready rather than when it's vaguely tepid and a bit dried out... @cyberphilosohack.bsky.social
