Prince Maurice's grave is interesting, because it was a good example of the conflicting thoughts families had. Princess Beatrice refused repatriation of the body. She felt he belonged with his men. But she fought for years for the right to spend her own money on a custom headstone. This was blocked

You have to admit that the entire Bolsonaro family under house arrest in the same house would be a hell of a sitcom.

Ooh Radio 3 playing Handel's Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. My wedding entry march 40 years ago. That might seem a little presumptuous, but it was kind of a family gag. I loved it as a child and bored everyone else in the family rigid as I spent hours and hours trying to play it on the piano.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

That is absolutely correct. That is precisely why we have the "No to Executions" campaign. For 143 weeks, political prisoners in Iran have been holding hunger strikes every Tuesday, and many prominent public figures have joined these Tuesday hunger strikes to protest

What is the BBC's justification for maintaining this level of coverage of Reform now it has slipped into third place?

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

Wet London morning but great to see the pedestrianisation of Oxford St taking shape at long last. Lots more to do to iterate and get this right for all Londoners. Have you dropped by yet? What are your thoughts?

Brilliant, beautifully illustrated and detailed account of last night’s transformation of Oxford St to a space for people on foot. On my way there now to see how it’s working out in practice. Do read Jim’s piece. 👇

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

Louise, Prof/Dr reposted

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

Go, students! Well done, Serbia.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

On EU membership, the gap between the national narrative and public opinion is vast. Joining again is inevitable, especially when you factor in ageing. It’s only a question of when. So let’s just get on with it.
