3. your career is a pie-eating contest where the prize for winning is more pie the things people see you do are the things they'll ask you to do. if you want to get asked to do certain types of work, make sure people see you doing that type of work

So this screen in @onlineornot.com has always been slower than I wanted - around 2.3s(!) to load 10 rows of data from the GraphQL endpoint. It was the first screen I ever built (4+ yrs ago), and I leaned heavily into GraphQL resolvers because I assumed it'd be fast.

I've managed to speed it up by ~80% with one simple trick: stop relying on GraphQL. Instead of fetching data resolver-by-resolver, now I fetch all of the data in one chonker of an SQL query.

Next step: move the dashboard over to the existing public REST API. Historically it's been hard to dogfood the public REST API since the whole dash uses GraphQL, so looking forward to that changing.

fyi founder friends โ€” new scam to watch out for

Dave Ceddia@daveceddia.com

A sneaky scam I've seen a few times now: Someone writes into support to demand a refund for a duplicate charge. "oh crap!" But their email is nowhere in my system, nor is their name...

every week when you've convinced yourself you just need to build one more feature and it'll fix the plateau just one more feature bro it'll be so good bro

TIL there are SaaS vendors that raise their prices automatically year over year for existing customers surely that increases churn?!

Quite an excellent piece. Max and I don't agree on everything (some of our lessons learned contradict each other), but I love having my thinking challenged, and I'm probably wrong on some of these!

I wrote an article about the lessons learned from running OnlineOrNot for the past four years: maxrozen.com/on-four-year...

crazy how effective positioning is "uptime monitoring for your software team" - weak, tired - been there, done that "get alerts when your team vibe-codes your product offline" - wired, locked-in - been looking for this for weeks, sign me up fam

fresh off a 28hr flight and have a whole day of work ahead of you? try "two double espressos before 9am"! you will certainly not regret having "two double espressos before 9am"!

think about your audience of course, but the *vast* majority of readers online aren't impressed by your use of words like utilize, leverage, operationalize, etc. if anything, you're confusing them. just say use.

thoughts on the new M4 air as a small business: as an engineer: obviously I'm getting it, hardware is cheap as the one paying the bill: I have to depreciate that mf over 3 years?! ๐Ÿ˜ค

Hello I'm hiring software engineer(s) in Sydney. (Hi I'm hiring software engineer(s) in Sydney, I'm dad.) But I actually am though, even though Bluesky has limited reach, feel free to say hi. More deets on LinkedIn if you like.

Moving a server-based AWS Lambda website to Cloudflare Workers (static assets) be like (1.1k ms avg latency to ~20ms avg latency)

heaps more folks lurking/posting once a year -> barely any content -> the algo does insane things like showing content from weeks ago
