Be extra kind to your security and devops folks. It's been a hellish week and it's only Wednesday, Lemon.

We should respect and hold sacred the old magics.

Enjoyed seeing this woman's work. Sustainability isn't just about producer decisions, but also consumer decisions, namely their willingness to repair things when needed. This type of repair is easier on natural fibers, rather than stretch fabrics. Consider that when shoppping. IG loosethreadsrepair

I'm a fan of Norwegian heavy metal, but it shouldn't be forced on anyone's tap.

Residents of a remote town in Norway that is in one of the fastest-warming places in the world have been told they must no longer drink tap water due to heavy metal contamination linked to the thawing permafrost. Article by Karen McVeigh www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Dinner conversation that spans two chapters? A Okay if the conversation is good/meaningful. B. Never okay. C. Fine. Whatever. D. Dude, you're not George R.R. Martin. Chop that shite.

Once again, every good person has to get better at sales, even if you aren't literally selling something for money. Explaining the costs and benefits of different approaches in terms that make sense to the person you're trying to convince is sales.

I saw a car with 2 awesome stickers on it. On the left it said, in pink, "Tailgate me harder, Daddy" then on the right it said "If I crash, please pause my audiobook" Kudos to that driver.

How do you define "Ethical AI?" For me, part of the definition must come from the material the model was trained on. Who was included? Who was excluded? Did they consent (opt in) and did they have opportunity to opt out? NONE of the existing large language models meet this btw.

To get beyond that, you'd need millions of pages of text. Right now there isn't a way to do that ethically. So we're at an impasse.

You can build a small model ethically by starting with creative commons, then sprinkle in any opted in text. That results in a model that can do basic grammar checking with so-so suggestions. It cannot respond to random queries well.

Had a close call visiting a local establishment's website yesterday. A CloudFlare dialogue came up, and after clicking to confirm that 'I was not a robot', it prompted me to: * Press Windows+R (opening a run command window * Paste something from my keyboard and press enter Don't ever do this.

"The Everlasting" by @alixeharrow.bsky.social : Fantastic read. Will read again. It's a different take on fantasy and romance. I read it without reading the blurb/summary first and feel like I got the better deal than my wife who's read it after all of that. Go in blind and just let the ride happen.

"Automatic Noodle" by Annalee Newitz : Delightful group of characters breaking the law and making their way to running a restaurant. Great read.

Have you walked a mall lately? I can't believe that Lids, a store dedicated to hats, would outlive KB Toys, Borders Books, and Circuit City. At least we still have Hot Topic.

Many are bad at numbers. They see a 1k, and that feels like a lot. A 1M feels like more, but close. A 1B is pretty close to a million, and a 1T is pretty close to a billion. We have to start writing them all out.

1,000,000,000,000. Trillion 1,000,000,000. Billion 1,000,000. Million 1,000. Thousand Every time until we all get that you're not going to become a billionaire tomorrow, or even a millionaire.

Listen up. Nicole's full thread here is very important and 100% aligned with what an experienced coach (hi 👋) would tell you, too.

I want to talk about being a software engineering manager in a world where AI is changing everything all at once. First, change is hard on humans. Even good change is stressful. People are built for survival, which means: if you aren’t dying, keep doing whatever already “works”

How much do I need to drink and of what spirit in order to forget the lyrics to Iesha by Another Bad Creation and other select songs of that era?

I worked hard on this story, it's important, & I want to share it. I'm also finding it difficult to put it out there without this context: Just as I wrapped up final edits last week, I got word that a friend vacationing in Arizona had died after overheating on a hike. www.eenews.net/articles/dea...

eenews.netDeadly heat is coming. But funding to save lives is not.Emergency officials are searching for loopholes to save lives as President Donald Trump slashes programs.

You obv. have to hide from the corporates, hack inept SecSys and cargo bots along the way. In between learning all you can about proper human behavior form the entertainments you download. Natch.

Chatting in Slack about IP that needs to be a game, I got a fully fleshed-out vision of a Murderbot game: You play as a rogue secunit trying to blend in. You have "memories" from Murderbot that unlock as you stumble from adventure to adventure, saving humans from themselves. MAKE IT HAPPEN. Plz+TY

Very cool report out. Worth a read. Now I'm gonna rant a lil' bit:

David Roberts@volts.wtf

New report from IRENA confirms that "in prime solar and wind regions, hybrid solutions combined with storage deliver round-the-clock power at lower costs than fossil fuels." Renewables+storage = round-the-clock power, cheaper than fossil fuels, in an ever-widening set of geographies. Pretty cool.

Every once in a while, I think, "Maybe I could do that [car] repair myself." Then I watch a professional technician do the repair and break 3 plastic hoses, raising the repair bill & the amount of time the car is unusable. So no. I will not be doing that. You go, professional-technician-person.

Taxation is the membership dues of living in a functioning society. You want netflix? You pay them. You want rule of law, an educated workforce, interstate commerce, and national security? Great. Pay the dues.

Do you have a name that's super common? I just fell down a rabbit hole of folks with my name. They're copywriters (some good, some great, some grifters), musicians, coders, fiction writers, real estate agents, and Taylor Swift's tour manager.

Reminder: You cannot give what you, yourself, do not possess. That means you cannot calm others unless you can be calm. You cannot heal others unless you are healthy. You cannot excite others if you are not excited. Remember that as you're doomscrolling, ignoring things that don't actually suck.

Someone who is clearly not enjoying my story is hungrily devouring it and angrily commenting as they do. I love it. #royalroad

I wrote about how AI in book publishing is a labor issue. "AI paranoia is a symptom of a larger problem: a corporate culture that values quantity over quality, quick output over the very human labor of poring over a manuscript & making sure that each & every word sings." lithub.com/its-getting-...

lithub.comIt’s Getting Harder to Spot AI in Contemporary Publishing. And That’s Very, Very Bad.Lately there has been a lot of hand-wringing, and rightly so, about if and how the publishing industry will deal with AI in the wake of the cancelation of the first major book deal due to suspected…
