I took VIA to/from Guelph regularly during my undergrad, enduring PTSD-inducing rattling along bolted rails in 50-year-old Budd cars. Since then, signalling upgrades made the line much safer, but as @seanyyz.bsky.social highlights, it's another exhibit in Canada's poor use of existing rail lines.
Alto, even if we see it through, is a drop in the bucket of passenger and freight railway improvements we need coast-to-coast. Our national network doesn't serve our 3rd-largest city, offers few trains for huge prices where it does call, and we don't have regional rail outside of 3 major metros.
I wish the "iron spine" we're developing around was getting more attention; we need better freight + passenger rail, allowing Canadians to travel and ship to other markets faster. It's beyond Alto, which I have my doubts on being successful. Port of Churchill work is good. @mark-carney.bsky.social

The Milton Line was the fourth GO Transit rail corridor, after the original Lakeshore line in 1967, Georgetown in 1974 and Richmond Hill in 1978. The route was originally opened by the Credit Valley Railway in 1879. It is the only GO train line to operate mostly on CP tracks.

NEW from me: Last year, Mark Carney set a goal to double Canada's non-US exports by 2035. Today, he's already halfway there In response to Trump's tariffs & threats, Canadian businesses, consumers, & even tourists are taking difficult steps to decouple from the US🧵 www.apricitas.io/p/how-canada...

Just as the #PolarVortex should be ramping up for season ahead, forecast models are now suggesting significant derailment heading into early November. Latest from @50shadesofvan.bsky.social, signs of its weakening and potential Canadian impacts before winter www.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weat...
How long before Waymo screws up the Toronto streetcars?
Waymo blocked the N-Judah again, at/in the: Carl & Cole Station, Cole Valley, San Francisco Waymo did it a few blocks down Carl St last month, at least once more since, and many other times over years. ~100 yr old Sunset tunnel behind the train and latest Waymo robot ahead. OP: tiktok.anuayyala
I had a really fun #bcpoli chat with a friend who lives in Squamish. David Eby's snap election is no paying off, with the BC Conservatives looking at 72% chance of winning a majority (per 338 Canada). Watching from Ontario, a couple thoughts.

I am loving the restoration and upload of Reboot.
"The diplomats said the objections center on the wording of 'associate membership,' not the broader goal of closer ties." Well, that's fine.
Germany, France and at least six other EU countries are pushing against “associate membership” as the name for closer EU ties with Canada, six diplomats involved in the negotiations said.
Selection of non-alcoholic beers. A lot of room for bars, restaurants and corner stores to expand their menu offerings, but the sheer selection from local and national breweries is great.

Watching Toronto's industrial Portlands get turned into a giant public park with the now-not-as-polluted Don River running through the middle of it. I took pictures of giant Oil tanks on Cherry St 25 years ago, now its a greenspace! I never pictured this happening at the time.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

The most remarkable thing to me was how some commenters said they can hear the Canadian accent in the chant.

There's chatter about Canada's Telesat providing military satellite support to Ukraine given what happened recently with Starlink. But the constellation isn't set to be operational by 2028, and is scheduled for deployment on SpaceX rockets.
This also seems to overlap with a proposal by France's Eutelsat, which French President Emanuel Macron pitched Mark Carney on last year.
