RAPE 👏 ISN'T 👏 AN 👏 ACCIDENT "Ambiguous consent" is an excuse, not an explanation.

Nicole Bedera@nbedera.bsky.social

The example given in the book is that there would be less rape if students had more chairs in dorm rooms. That there is too much ambiguity when students sit side-by-side on a bed for a rapist to realize their victim did not consent.

I just think scientists and creative writers should collaborate more tbh My science colleagues help me think through SO MANY cool plot points for my manuscripts 10/10, writers need ALL KINDS of friends, including ones who know about poisons

I'm sure smarter people than me have named and analyzed this phenomenon, but when capitalism is in conflict with white supremacy, misogyny, ablism, queerphobia, etc., it always loses. Capitalism is used to enforce other forms of marginalization, not the other way around.

How are capitalists so bad at capitalisming

I don't want to be cynical, but y'all had four years to do something and then somehow let him walk right back into office.

Americans are ready to put an end to the Trump and Republican corruption. House Democrats are stepping in.

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...

So historically, instead of just standing up for themselves, Democrats join their bully in attacking themselves, and convince people who want obvious answers to desperate problems that they don't stand for much of anything. And their reward for it is they're still painted as dirty Commies.

This doctor is exhibiting "punch in the face seeking behavior."

Elizabeth Spiers@espiers.bsky.social

After my c-section, I asked my ObGYN what care at home would look like and what sort of painkiller I'd be prescribed (so my husband could pick it up) and he said OTC Tylenol because by asking, I was "exhibiting drug seeking behavior."

When I was a kid, I loved drawing. A couple of years ago I picked it up again. The thing about art is no matter how good you get, there's always a million people better than you, but that's no excuse to not be proud of what you've accomplished.

If you're good at something, show it off. But even if you're not, show it off. Good or bad, art makes the world worth living in. Art is the least "efficient" thing you can do with your time. And that's kind of beautiful to me.

It must be a very comforting thought. Everyone's secretly using AI to write emails and come up with things to say to their family for them, you're not a deeply weird person, everyone else is doing it too, just secretly! The cowards. At least you admit it. You're the brave truth teller for saying so.

do you think we all got on a Zoom call and were like "alright gay people can get married next up is making sure we can place fifth NCAA swim meets"

Hot take: World building is something beginning writers do to avoid actual writing. This isn't just in fantasy or sci-fi, either. Character bios, excessive outlining, over justification, etc. also count. If the story's working, readers don't care about plot holes or minor inconsistencies.

Lady Emily ☄️@ladyemily.nebula.tv

In college I did a workshop with a professor who didn’t let us write sci-fi or fantasy. Not because she thought less of them, but because the writing and class discussion would get bogged down in things like the logistics of time travel or elf lore rather than focusing on what makes a story work

It's fascinating how many ridiculous elements there are in this quote. The more you look, the more you find. Case and point: "prewritten software"? As opposed to what? "Postwritten software"? I have extremely nerdy friends and not once have I spoken to them about how much tax I pay on software.

RFK Jr: "President Trump has a different way of calculating percentages. If you have a $600 drug and you reduce it to $10, that's a 600% reduction."

This is embarrassing. I don't remember if it was the same in the book, but it bothered me how ridiculous Project Hail Mary's portrayal of the scientific process was. I know it's fiction, but one dude isn't singlehandedly solving the biggest problems in physics on his own alone in a lab.

I'm not even saying that's the most *likely* possibility, but it's just very clear that the likelihood of that outcome as increased and even if there's, like, a 1 in 10 change that "AI replaces most to all white collar jobs in 10 years" that's an *enormous* risk to the social order!

The problem is the hype is objectively *not* true, but tech will make sure AI replaces humans anyway. We're seeing it already. It's really the worst of both worlds: people lose their jobs and we don't even get functional products as a result.

Chris Hayes@chrislhayes.bsky.social

I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

Republicans: We don't hate immigrants. We just want them to follow the legal process to become citizens. Also Republicans: You don't seriously expect us to go through the hoops of the legal process, do you?

Matthew Bunn@matthew-bunn.bsky.social

Seriously, folks, people did NOT vote for murder on the streets. A majority of those who voted went for Trump, and to win power, those against Trump will have to win many of them over, not reject them all as people who want fascism.
