In yesterdays #railsworld2026 keynote DHH said that they’re switching to native apps for hey and that in the world of agents native apps make more sense. Just a couple of years ago he was all in on PWAs because they’re not hostage to Apple and their App Store rules.

While everything seems doom and gloom right now I think we can listen to one piece of advice DHH gave us and be optimistic, just not in the way he imagined.

As everything enshittifies there’s a huge opportunity for Open Source right now to come in and give everyone data sovereignty and control over their experiences. Several EU countries are investing a lot in open source it’s just not as edgy as Omarchy. Switch off the AI news and go build stuff 💪🖖

There are other reasons we may not want native apps for everything: - they can bypass adblockers - we can’t customise our experience I use YouTube on the web on my phone and use extensions to remove all the behavioural tools they include to keep me on the platform longer.

Peeps, remember that while the billionaires are making everything awful we can still sit in our corner and make stuff for all the refugees who are coming looking for an alternative. Now is the time for optimism.

I’m thinking of getting an iPhone Duo but prior I’d planned on quitting smartphones and switching to a semi-dumb phone. I want my life back. I want the magic smart box to not feel like the answer to boredom. Maybe the answer is to reduce them find enrichments rather than quit cold tofurkey.

This is spectacular, folks. We live in a moment in American history when the president and his administration are so racist and dumb that a toy company has to put out a statement saying: "OUR GIANT ROBOT THAT TURNS INTO A TRUCK DENOUNCES RACISM AND HAS NO CONNECTION TO THE CURRENT PRESIDENT."

(Takes '500 Miles' off the dance playlist) (And yes, I've put it into DJ sets before, it works) (But, you know, fuck transphobia and all that)

Using browser extensions I’ve trimmed YouTube down to just the subscriptions page with no related videos shown. It’s amazing how boring it becomes when there isn’t endless content to consume! I don’t measure my screen time but I suspect more of it is spent in more useful places now.

Already the talk from No 10 is reforming social care, and I’ve not heard a peep about making sure corporations pay their taxes.

I need to prepare a presentation on some work I did in some previous technical work for a job interview. Because it was a while ago I'm writing about the experience as I remember it, and adding any questions as they come up. Gonna get AI to quiz me too. Anything else I can do to jog my memory?

I cancelled my preorder for a @frame.work desktop when it launched. It was max memory and 2gb, would’ve cost me £2400. Same config today is around £4000. Who knew how much I’d regret not keeping my preorder. 😢

I recently switched from Google workspace to @proton.me’s workspace. So far I’m not having too much trouble and I also gained a replacement for 1Password along the way. Lumo is still way behind the competition. Still I’m willing to accept compromises to support a European privacy focused non-profit.

Most important for me was booking page, meet alternative, and email. I did have one issue where a council employee tried to create an account to join my meet and that was blocked by over zealous council IT. So we ended up on google meet though I don’t think she needed to make an account to join.

I haven’t used Proton Docs & Sheets much yet so can’t comment, and there’s no alternative for Slides, Forms, and Pages but I wasn’t using them anyway.

Getting more and more frustrated with Apple and I hate using android. Are there any tablets that I can run Linux on (first party support). Really wanting to be able to customise my experience again in the face of addictive slot machine apps, AI, and notifications.

I know I can uninstall, and disable all those things. But my point is that these devices are dragging me towards a place I don’t want to be. Instagram didn’t become what it was overnight. It slowly overtime became what it is. Apple used to let me just read a magazine now I need the news app.

Unpopular opinion. First timer reviews of star fox (2026) are better and more useful than those from folks who played starfox 64. #starfox

Am I the only one who thought WWDC was a giant snooze fest? (And most of the presenters looked like they’d been sedated).

Seeking recommendations for my first record player. I’d like it to be wood with black features. And to sound good of course. But not interested in spending tons and tons of money yet.

This office which I’ve called my second home for almost two months now and all of 2023 is getting knocked down next month. There’s almost no one here anymore. It’s peaceful and now that I keep all the blinds open, beautiful in this late winter sun.

What I’m letting go of in 2026 in order to get past my demons and posted content online! www.instagram.com/reel/DTfMs12... I feel like my experience of neurodivergence is directly opposed with making videos so this was very difficult for me to make and do! #adhd #autism #audhd #contentcreators

It’s pretty terrifying how many people aren’t able to detect AI voices in content. I certainly have been fooled once or twice but there’s always a tell in the end. I wonder how much content I’ve watched where I haven’t known.

I wonder why it makes me stop watching the content. I had no problem watching shorts on TikTok with the bad AI voice but now it feels like it’s trying to trick me. Especially when they don’t tag the content as AI.

I think come Jan/Feb I’ll be looking for full time work again, most suited for senior / TL roles in Ruby on Rails companies. Would be very up for a first leadership role/cto in the right small company. Keep me in mind y’all ☺️ Pic of last night’s dinner for catching your attention.

I just uninstalled Claude cli. It’s like a gambling slot machine and I pull the lever and sometimes get the code that I want. But now my nd brain is really struggling to get out there and code for myself, and endlessly asking a tool to make changes doesn’t feel rewarding at all.

Stop buying games for your steam library until you’re actually going to play them. You’re just depreciating your money over time.
