I’m opening to queries from November 1- November 5 (for however many I receive)! This will be the last time I open this year, though I plan to open in early 2027. My #mswl is evergreen - but feel free to ask if you have questions! #literaryagents #amquerying #amwriting #querying

Rebecca Matte@rebeccamatte.com

Things that excite me right now: 1) stories featuring disability/chronically ill characters who succeed *because of* their strength/accommodations 2) contemp. romance with fantasy elements 3) "cozy" stories with high personal/local stakes 4) Adventure forward fantasy 5) hobby/niche romances

Hey #DVpit! There’s a big NYC publishing conference today, so I’ll be looking at pitches later! If you get a like from me, please send your query and first 10 pages to the link I will share under your post! Please *only* use that if you get a like, for now, and include the pitch in your query

As I review queries, I feel it is important to clarify: I abhor AI and do not use it in any capacity in my life. I will not ever use AI as part of my determination whether to offer representation, or any time thereafter in my working relationship with clients. #amquerying #amwriting #literaryagent

Wow! Nearly 300 queries in about 31 hours! I may have cheated just a bit and started reviewing early so I could sneak a few in over 250. But I have to acknowledge why I have my limits in place - to make sure I can get through everything timely and with due attention.

So, I am now closed to queries - but don’t worry! I’ll be dipping into #PitchDis and #DVPit later this month, and aiming to open again in November. Stay tuned!

World building imo is creating a foundational system (shallow or deep) for a narrative that has some internal consistency. This is primarily achieved by thinking of it as a series of connections & relationships between nodes in which nodes may be objects, places, characters, cultural touchstones etc

Christina Orlando@cxorlando.bsky.social

y'all worldbuilding is so much work why do we do this

I am officially open to queries! My plan is to stay open until I reach 250, with the goal of opening periodically (every other month?) once I find a balance. #amquerying #amwriting #literaryagent

Writers... The industry can be *challenging*. Do the best you can. Find joy where you can. Celebrate everything you can. If you're putting down words, doing edits, critiques, sending submissions or queries, & more? Quick reminder: -rejection- DOES NOT MEAN you are a bad writer!!! Keep. Going. ❤️‍🔥

Spent my PT session yesterday telling my therapist how many amazing late 90s/early 00s movies adaptations of Shakespeare comedies. And now I would LOVE a new one. So #mswl - a fresh rom com with late 90s feel that adapts Shakespeare or Austen or another classic. They’re such fun!!

Inbox 0 for the first time in 4 years! Now I’m finally ready to get 250 new queries, starting Monday, Sept. 14! #amquerying #amwriting #literaryagents

I still think the funniest thing my parents have ever done is buy my friends rounds of tequila shots at the end of my 30th birthday dinner because we hadn’t met our food/bev minimum and my mom didn’t want to waste the money.

Ever wondered what a literary agent actually does? 📚 Literary agents are so much more than the person who sends a manuscript to a publisher. They discover talent, champion authors, navigate the publishing industry, negotiate deals, and help build careers.

Hi all - I know my agency email is public now, but *please* do not send me queries by email. I delete all queries by email without consideration. I only open to queries via Query Manager at specific times (cough **September 14** next). This helps me stay organized and reply to everyone. Thanks!

It’s a surreal feeling, holding my book in my hands! (It’s a lot longer than I thought it would be.) My first ARC came and I’m absolutely stunned. It’s a real book! With words and pages and everything!

To me, there are two key things about worldbuilding: 1) Believability 2) Internal consistency Things need to make sense while you're reading, for buy in. This is as true in a modern romance as a secondary world epic fantasy. This does not mean you need to go into great detail about every piece

Mike Headley (He/Him)@mikeheadley.bsky.social

I'm NOT saying world-building is "Bad" or "Not fun" or you shouldn't do it. Rather, especially in sff, some new authors are convinced they NEED to spend 50 hours determining the geography of their world to understand how the last 50 kings developed to set the scene. You don't NEED that.

HOWEVER this does not mean that the world should be window dressing. It should feel lived in. Whole. Comprehensive. If the transit or magic or relationships don't feel 3 dimensional, a reader will feel it. Build as much as you need for it to feel whole, to feel *real*. And your readers will buy in.

I am opening to 250 new #queries on September 14! I have an evergreen #mswl but some things I am particularly excited about right now are in the thread below! I'm actively looking for some new authors to work with at KT, & I can't wait to see what you have for me 👀 #amquerying #amwriting #agenting

I've got COVID, so I have time: let's talk about my #mswl as I prepare to open on September 14! Didn't have great success with trying to limit queries to a particular genre, so instead I'll just ask for a variety of things and hope people keep to that and my wishlist.

Things I am not excited about right now: 1) Fae stories (particularly fae romantasy) 2) small town romances 3) grimdark 4) dark romances (I am too ace for most of this) 5) darkness for the sake of darkness - I need my dark elements to *say* something, or be there for a reason

I'm also home sick today, so I have time. So please feel free to #AMA about my wishlist or agenting! I've spent the weekend demystifying and am happy to continue that here, if people have questions. #amquerying #amwriting #agenting #mswl

6) Something *new* This is the worst, and I know this. Here's what I mean: - unique worldbuilding - new twists on familiar plot points & tropes - plot twists that play on and upend expectations - similar narratives from under-represented povs that materially change the underlying story #mswl

I spent the weekend at #LAConV talking about what unifies my list. My deals are spread across four genres, but they all have one main principle: stories of self discovery/determination/assertion. Strong focus on community, organizing and belonging as foils against oppression and authoritarianism.

Bad new @laworldcon.bsky.social - I just tested positive for Covid. I was masked at all time indoors (except for a few instances where I’ve notified people involved). Even so, I’m so sorry if I’ve gotten anyone sick. I had such a wonderful time meeting everyone and I hate ending it like this

My flight attendant just complimented my copy of Dungeon Crawler Carl and said he had heard good things and planned to pick up his own copy. The world is getting me prepared for con

After seeing a neurologist because I couldn’t feel my hands or feet. When his scan didn’t bear out his theory, he pulled a pity face and said “are you sure you’re not just depressed?” To which I said, “Sure, I am depressed, but I also can’t feel my hands” and walked out. It was severe anemia.

I’m the youngest person on this river cruise by about 30 years. I used this power to attempt to unionize the older ladies as we were called up for a dance competition. They didn’t bite.

It took about a week to receive 100 queries - thank you to everyone who sent materials! I'm making my way through and hope to be able to open either in July or August to a new category!

Reminder that tomorrow, I will be open to queries for queer romance with magic elements until I reach 100 queries! Please do not send me other things, because I will not consider them at this time (unless you have a referral link). I will open again hopefully in August for something else!

**I will be opening to queries on Monday, June 1 until I reach 100 queries** During this time, I will ONLY be accepting queries for queer romance with magical elements. Think Sangu Mandanna, Sara Raasch - romance + grounded/very low fantasy. Let magic enhance love, and make me swoon. #amquerying

I just *devoured* The Fake Divination Offensive by @sararaaschbooks.com & it's EXACTLY what I want in my query inbox June 1. Here's why romance with magic is fun: 1) Magic/fantasy elements are usually delightful to read about 2) Grounded magic allows smaller & sillier worldbuilding #amquerying

3) Magic gives new life to the best tropes - every romance beat gets a fantasy twist or a magical quandary. 4) Magical effects enhancing character's sex lives makes for great spicy scenes 5) Small stakes magic conflict that still feels like big stakes because the romance is EVERYTHING

And for me, best of all: 6) Deep character dives that let magic stand in for real world problems, so you get the same depth and character work but with the wonderful escapism of not dealing with real politics, religion or bigotry The story is the romance, but it comes with an extra sparkle ✨

Remember: this is part 1 of my attempt to be open more regularly. I will be open again in a few months for something else hyper specific. Upcoming categories are likely: 1) fantasy by BIPOC authors 2) YA about community, friendship and platonic love 3) books by disabled authors about disability
