imagine if someone wrote a definitive history of western europe, but they could only understand/read proto germanic and chinese, they didn’t have any untranslated sources and they didn’t interview any living locals that outside of the college? bc that’s a lot of books on indian history to me

it’s 100% gotten better (s/o to dalrymple) but when you’re writing about south asia beyond terror threats, poverty porn, and new age spirituality, there is genuinely no bottom for what people feel comfortable saying about the subcontinent based on nothing

another wrinkle: writing honest history will get you death threats. dalrymple has somewhat of a shield bc he’s a White man who writes mostly in english. also doesn’t hurt that Camilla is his third cousin. how do we provide brown historians the same protection/liberty?

This is mostly status quo bias. Cornfields are seen as pastoral and quaint, while fields of solar panels are new and different and a little dystopian-looking

anytime people raise concerns about land use for solar projects or anything like that i just want to point out that half the corn we grow in this country gets used to make gasoline slightly worse

just finished the dispossessed after forgetting how to read for several weeks and now. NOW I figure out it’s part of a series. I KNEW THE HAINISH SOUNDED FAMILIAR.

I took a law class in high school and our teacher asked all of us if we could recite the Preamble. We all immediately started singing it to the Schoolhouse Rock theme. She’d never heard it before and looked at us like we were all in a cult.

The only way I can recite the Preamble to the Constitution is to sing it. In my generation, at least, I don't think I'm alone in that respect.

Hot tip for art thieves: find buyers before you steal art! Or else you'll steal it, find that no collectors are stupid enough to buy hot masterpieces, and live in a state of increasing state of panic before a sting operation catches your ass. Today's case in point: www.nytimes.com/2026/08/14/w...

This can create two scenarios: 1. authors have to openly discuss their own trauma histories and then display the appropriate wallowing in that trauma for the reader to accept their accreditation. 2. author who refuse are (unknowingly to the reader) of not having "actually" been raped not really

Was having a conversation on this topic just recently. A book (or story or painting or movie or whatever) is not a puzzle with a Correct Solution. It's an experience to think about and with, to chew over and then bring to other experiences.

Writinge about literature ys not undirstondinge a booke completelye and then sayinge somethinge clever. It ys, by contrast, failinge agayne and agayne to undirstonde a booke completelye and makinge the moost descryptive notes possible about the resultes. Meaninge ys a process, not a schoolboy prize.

Hey remember that fun thread i wrote about how corporate lingo has infected casual vernacular and how language shapes our thinking and how companies always have to be showing profit and growth Excise the brand from your mind. Become human again

On social media, a broad consensus is that you can’t admit to struggle — at least not while you’re struggling. Doing so represents a failure so profound it’s almost existential. How did it become mandatory to demonstrate perpetual growth and progress online?

Library pro tip: never go in without locking the emergency stop. If the lights are motion activated and you’re alone, they will definitely turn off if you’re in there, someone will come in and assume sensibly that there’s no one there. Ask my busted ribs how we know!

Propaganda arm of Susan Collins campaign in action. The actual news here -- to the extent their is any -- is that her team thinks she's got more trouble on her left flank than her right. OR that her numbers are so weak in general that it's worth risking MAGA's ire to shake up the race. #MEpolitics

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

That this could happen at all, this insane persecution spurred by conspiracy theorists and political predators, against a man who helped save millions of American lives... It's monumental evidence of the *joke* our nation has become.
