This piece by student journalist Naishu Vempali made me pump my fist in solidarity. I hope when I’m back teaching at UMass next year they take a class with me, where they can expect nothing but top quality human-grade feedback, interaction, and attention.

Latest read - Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon. I loved this. The story of two unemployed potters from Syracuse during the Peloponnesian War who stage a production of Medea and The Trojan Women using Athenian prisoners from the unsuccessful invasion of the city. Wonderful. #booksky
Terry Street might have been Douglas Dunn's first full collection, but it's still my favourite, alongside Elegies.
This poem is a terrific example of Dunn's skill, an empathetic and insightful snapshot of working-class life...
The Shandean journal is pleased to support this conference, in Aix-en-Provence, Autumn 2027. The theme is travel and cultural exchanges in the age of Sterne, meaning you don't have to be a Sternean to join us! CFP deadline, February 2027.

I'm so proud & grateful to have been awarded the 2026 Rose Mary Crawshay prize for Textile Shakespeare, joining a roll-call of amazing women scholars and critics. At the ceremony last night I spoke about some of my foremothers as a NZer & a Cambridge Shakespearean, as well as my family.
Very proud of my partner for getting into the OED! His is the most recent example for 'textus' (an ornately decorated manuscript or book, often of religious importance, in case you wondered). A nerdy win for @qmul.bsky.social! #OED
Remember to celebrate Gulliver in the manner of your choosing:
- fighting over which end of the egg to open
- pissing on government buildings
- finding a giant lady to hug you
- hiring someone to hit you with a balloon when you get distracted
- running away from humanity to talk to horses
Our new exhibition is now live! Produced by @livunienglish.bsky.social & @livunilibrary.bsky.social to celebrate 300 years of Gulliver's Travels & featuring readings by writers including Satinder Chohan, Hester Grant, Ian Hislop, Paterson Joseph, @christopherpaolini.bsky.social & Evie Woods

All seminars take place on Tuesdays at 5:30 pm (Cambridge time) in person at Magdalene College, with a hybrid option via Zoom.
Eamonn McCann is always razor sharp in his analysis of the North.
Garvagh road is not a difference between ‘two communities’ that needs ‘both sides’ understood. It only benefits the DUP and hardline loyalists to force us to revisit a terrible time in the North. rebelnews.ie/2026/10/02/g...
This symposium on “Whiteness as Property” will be absolutely incredible and I am so grateful I will be able to attend! Cheryl Harris will speak, along with a list of scholars from around the world
This, by @starcrossed2018.bsky.social, has been my early autumn companion, and it’s such a wonderful and illuminating read. I love this eloquent observation about early modern making.

A showcase of interdisciplinary research alongside a fascinating collection of works by international artists.
It’s astounding this isn’t the only thing people are talking about.
It shows how much power mainstream news, who are blacking out the climate element of this El Niño, still holds.

This article was very much a labour of love, and it took even longer than usual to be published, so I really mean it when I say I am DELIGHTED to see it in print. I have free prints if anyone needs one! www.tandfonline.com/eprint/VXW3P...
Today is Michaelmas, a quarter day in the Irish calendar, and traditionally when rents were paid & contracts signed. It's also the last day to eat blackberries - after today, they belong to the Devil and will make you sick!

1/2 We have vastly improved data now on British slave-owners (www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/search/) and slave-traders (britishslavetraders.org). Wonderful that this research has persisted despite all the fury of the nationalist right wing backlash.
NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌

I and many college teachers have seen this IRL and it is astonishing actually — the vacant look, the shifting eyes, the final attempt to start saying something & then it just stops. “I have trouble remembering things after I write them down,” the most memorable guy told me— and then stared at me
"One 2025 study out of M.I.T. found that people who used chatbots as writing assistants struggled to remember what they had written only minutes after finishing their essay."

I am a middle-aged childless female academic in need of a 2026-7 pocket diary and HELL will FREEZE OVER before I give in and purchase something called a 'Mum's Diary'...🤬😱😭

It's just weird isn't it when the British Museum is running a sold-out exhibition, when The Odyssey reports $1billion at the box office, when the V&A has just opened the most innovative and accessible museum model in Europe....and this is what our minister for research comes out with.
A cheery message from the new minister responsible for research funding for the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences (and the subjects that the majority of UK taught undergraduate and Masters students study).
Superb news - an exciting project to create a digital edition of the Correspondence Networks of James Murray and the OED. The largest collection of these letters is at @bodleian.ox.ac.uk. Congratulations @stephenturton.bsky.social!

Congratulations to Dr Stephen Turton @stephenturton.bsky.social who has been awarded a prestigious ERC Starting Grant for his project ENCOED, which will create a digital edition of the letters of James A. H. Murray, the first chief editor of the #OED.
