Late to my own party, but it is wonderful to see my edition of Hortense Mancini’s letters in print, which arrived at the start of the year. If you think your library would benefit from the words of one of the seventeenth-century’s most libertine women, here is the link: iterpress.org/978164959131...
A dreamy evening at KCL on Thursday at our seminar on Restoration women and worldly self-fashioning from Elizabeth Lauderdale’s gorgeous screen to Hortense Mancini’s Asian patch boxes. Excess was the theme of the night - so much to say, so many wonderful questions, and many glasses of wine 🍷
In our latest blog post, recent Maddock Fellow Dan Rafiqi places Élie Bouhéreau’s diary within the wider tradition of seventeenth-century autobiographical writing.

It’s probably not often that someone can say that after four years of work, they got hit by a car the week they planned to submit their PhD thesis. Even so, 2 nights in hospital, 8 staples in my head, and one hefty concussion only amounted to a 3 week delay, and what will be a funny story!

As tiresome as it is to hear Andy Burnham saying "innovation nation" over and over, it's arguably even worse to hear this talk of industrialisation. We have great, valuable export industries in the arts, TV, the BBC and higher education. All are being filleted; thousands out of work, and what for?
Looking forward to this in a couple of weeks! Hear us talk about Elizabeth Maitland's lacquer cabinets, Nell Gwyn's silver snuff box, and Hortense Mancini's Chinese silks. All welcome 🍷

Forty four (yes 44!) pounds for a <1h train journey from Cambridge to London this morning - that’s almost a pound a minute - and the WiFi is down again. Well, why don’t you live nearer work, you ask, if the trains are so terrible? Dear Reader, because my campus is on THE STRAND.

I walk past this house all the time, dusty and unattended, but very beautiful; set back from the road. It has recently been for sale. I love IM and also the quiet pace of these paintings and their magic energy all a secret for years. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
This reminds me of the time I was complaining how clogged my local park gets with cyclists and dogwalkers during my daytime runs, so a male friend suggested I go running late, after 10pm, like he does.
Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives.
I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
