HHS wants a new Medicare code that pays doctors extra only when they attribute a patient’s symptoms to a vaccine. Vaccine critics say doctors are paid to push vaccines. We aren’t. Under this code, we’d be paid to blame them. My new piece in @cidrap.bsky.social: www.cidrap.umn.edu/childhood-va...

cidrap.umn.eduCIDRAP Op-Ed: HHS says it wants better evidence on vaccine injuries. It’s building a system that will produce the opposite.

Medical research saves lives. I met with scientists at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center this week to thank them for their work and to discuss the importance of restoring federal health research funding.

This is 🎯🧪 From a pancreatic cancer researcher in my circle Lately, we have been seeing so many miracles in cancer treatment. We celebrate. That is because we had a great infrastructure that operated efficiently. I don’t want to live in a time when these wins are far off in the rear view mirror.

"Opinionrot emerges when communication systems increasingly optimize for persuasion, attention capture, and prediction rather than collective reasoning." Such an interesting analysis and useful framing. Worth the effort to decode the disciplinary writing. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

This week, NIH advisors rebuked RFK for harming #NIH and US science. Sheryl Gay Stolberg reported it. Then RFK posted calling her sources anonymous or corrupt. I'll say this hoping it does good: I'm an NIH scientist, I'm not anonymous, and RFK Jr is destroying NIH. More in attachment:

We computer scientists need to study more developmental biology and ecology. The problem with the machine view is not the materialism—it’s the belief in clean boundaries. That you can pull a “component” out of its web of dynamic interactions

True even as a writer of scientific journal articles. I've been working on a particularly difficult one for more than a year, trying to communicate a complex idea to a diverse audience from many disciplines. I've been revising, rewording, reordering, refining every aspect until it absolutely sings.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

This is a wild story about what it takes to opt out of Epic's desire to monetize your health records.

It's long been said that crypto is only useful for crime... That's selling it short -- crypto has made possible entirely new kinds of crime. ~$100M payoff for a hardware supply chain attack.

This is like something from a crime novel. Criminals bought lots of the very secure USB-like Ledger devices which are used for password storage, added their own password reading components and then put them back into circulation. They then hacked them all in one go www.ft.com/content/70f6...

Hate that so many of our tech overlord billionaires are childless young men. So callous.

These people have re-engineered Word, and the whole Adobe family of products… they claim it’s a “clean room” rebuild so that could make it legal?? (Though it will obviously be litigated to hell…)

Cory spells out the world’s worst and most pressing problem quite clearly here.

There are many ways in which every billionaire is a policy failure, but the most corrosive and destructive way in which billionaires are policy failures is this: billionaires, despite being unelected and unaccountable, possess the power to control - and ruin - millions of peoples' lives.

Opus 5.5 is smarter than me, but it’s ok, because I have better taste - a good sense of what people in my community want. What a microcosm for the future of work. It will look like the present and past of work. Like David Graeber says, “all work is care work.”

Some marginalia from my full reading of the Pope's Encyclical on AI this morning: - AI does not love - AI does not intrinsically value truth or justice - AI does not experience hunger - AI does not experience communion with the natural world or any sort of higher power

Sad that this outdated and naive idea is so prevalent. Contemporary neuroscience demonstrates that the entire body is involved. It's not just your brain, or even just your neurons. Your muscles, gut, immune system, and other body systems all contribute to constructing your conscious experience.

Either consciousness is an emergent phenomenon of the electrochemical processes of Brain, or you’re doing dualism If it’s the first thing, it’s not clear why Brain is the only possible medium for the phenomenon
