The Garden Route District of the Western Cape enters summer with all its dams bar 2 at 100% capacity. We couldn’t hope for a better scenario as we face the looming El Niño impacts. Further west ie the Overberg, Cape Town etc. things are not looking the same.

I spend my days helping people develop resilience plans to try and avoid permanent loss. The level of complacency caused by climate impacts not materialising immediately is scary. This El Niño is going to be a case study of people being caught completely off guard by its delayed impacts.

Historic comeback in Brazil! And perhaps, more importantly, the emergence of a new playbook for beating the far right: Challenge social media algorithms in the courts, reclaim the flag, call out extractivist fascism and fill the streets and the networks.

Remember this: 17 Nov 2023 was the first day in which the global temperature exceeded 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The exact temperature was 2.07ºC. Then 18 Nov came in at 2.06ºC Well there is now a strong possibility for this record to be broken before October ends. 22 Oct was 1.95ºC

What are things looking like on the per capita greenhouse gas emissions front? Russian and the US are in a league of their own! (One slither of hope for the US a -1.2% 10-year average change) The EU is still above the global average but their 10-year average change is best in class at -2.9%

Current policies put the world on course for up to 2.8°C of warming this century. That means greater risk from extreme heat, floods & wildfires. But this future isn’t inevitable. Fast emissions cuts can limit warming and reduce risks to people and nature: https://ow.ly/KjOW51002IV #EmissionsGap

This graphic forces us to confront a hard truth: We urgently need to prepare for a world at 2°C and if the current 0.4°C/decade holds we will get there in ~13 years. We are nowhere near adequately prepared for the consequences. What will your area look like at 2°C? Best you find out! 1/2

Today in London (10am) the UNEP releases its Emissions Gap Report 2026: The Point of Return They say the chance of holding warming to below 1.5°C with no or limited overshoot is gone. To get on the "lowest possible" scenario pathway (ie 1.7-1.8°C) emissions must fall by ~6.4% annually until 2030.

And when will we reach 2ºC you ask. Well quoting Qinjian Jin & Bing Pu (8 October 2026) "The same framework was applied to estimate the timing of the 2.0°C threshold. Ensemble-mean crossing times are projected to occur in 2040." So that would be in ~13 years. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Here is @wyeates.bsky.social asking the £ million question that was on *everyone’s* mind as the Emissions Gap Report briefing unfolded earlier today. Transcript in Alt.

As we begin the 1.5°C overshoot and the steady march to 2°C 538.5 mm in 6hrs 😳 Remarkable.

What do @andyburnham.bsky.social, @miattafahnbulleh.bsky.social and the UK Labour government do? That's right, give the go ahead for more greenhouse gases and signal to the global oil & gas industry that "Hey, it's OK to drill for more, because we are". Jackdaw is a knife in the back 🗡️

Page 32: "Decades of insufficient action have now measurably worsened the achievable climate outcomes for this century. The lowest peak warming supported by feasible and sustainable pathways is now around 1.7°C. which is about 0.1°C higher than in AR6." "Locked in by delay"

As a result of all this - this is the reality we face: ie existing policies provide a very low probability of remaining below 2°C

What might global fossil CO2 emissions do in 2026? Based on IEA estimates, fossil CO2 emissions could decline 0.5% in 2026. A big 2.4% drop in oil & small 0.5% drop in gas, is partially offset by a 1.2% increase in coal. All very uncertain! www.energiogklima.no/nyhet/hormuz...

Supersized heat waves used to be rare. No longer. A Reuters data-driven examination of global temperatures reveals the emergence of what we call heat storms. They now swarm the planet, upending life around the world. reut.rs/4zBUXtM

NEW from IRI: “Our current intensity classification is capped at +2.0°C, yet a majority of models (about 10 models) in the plume—including both dynamical and statistical models—forecasts Niño3.4 values that could reach or exceed +3.5°C, well beyond our highest defined category.” 1/2

As physical environments destabilise as the planet continues to heat, early warnings have become a critical focus to keep people safe. (See See details on the WMO’s Early Warnings For All initiative wmo.int/activities/e...) New data on what makes people act on warnings is now available.
