The Trace@thetrace.org

Research confirms that when temperatures rise, gun violence increases. What was previously unknown, was the effect climate change has on gun violence. A new study by Climate Central links climate change to an increase in gun violence. Read more: thetr.ac/0edNF

it's clear from the engineer patter that Musk's design brief for the Roadster was "break the laws of physics," which makes sense considering they're really the only laws Musk hasn't broken yet

inside of you are two wolves. both of them have two brain hemispheres. each of those hemispheres has two lobes. inside of each lobe are two regions. within each region there are two areas. each area contains a multitude of cells. within each multitude

Laws are made against the impulse a people most fears in itself. Do not kill was the Shing's vaunted single Law. All else was permitted: which meant, perhaps, there was little else they really wanted to do...

Εκατό τέσσερα χρόνια πριν σήμερα the United States had a reputation for evacuating refugees from genocides σήμερα χρηματοδοτεί ευχαρίστως τις ίδιες γενοκτονίες

I'm learning via being a semi public presence online that a lot of people will condescendingly make up these rules on the spot and then act like everyone knows them

In science communications, if you're trying to correct the record on something, be brief and be level-headed. Lobbing 100-page blog posts across the internet (25 pages of which are Bluesky screenshots) is unprofessional and sloppy. I don't know what else to tell you.

What that looked like on the ground: Pakistan went to a four-day week and closed schools for two weeks. Sri Lanka rationed fuel by QR code at 25 litres/week. India rationed cooking gas to one cylinder per 25 days. US drivers, by comparison, trimmed about 3%. damstrait.net#overview-burden-grid 5/7

Is anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area (specifically San Mateo county) interested in meeting with state senator Josh Becker to discuss #AB2047? If Silicon Valley of all places can't secure a No vote on this bill from a single Senator, manufacturing (and democracy) here might as well be dead.

legendary softball post by @bencollins.bsky.social. technical people prefer (probably 10:1 or more) to talk to other technical people about technical things than to do any kind of public relations or outreach whatsoever, which has led to the present public misunderstanding problem

Talk to the people who would use this for dream use cases — the cancer scientists, the people who want to make material goods out of it — and they will tell you it’s either a marginally useful if unreliable trick or completely useless. It has produced 0% of the utopian products promised.

A) many people think machines in principle cannot have subjective experience. This seems to me to require some sort of dualism, which I don't find convincing. It requires you to posit a new universe of physics, and often the claim boils down to gut feelings, aka "dualist seemings."
