Problem of the Week 195! Please do not comment the solution so others can work it out too. Instead, like this post or comment a thumbs up if you think you have the correct answer! The solution will be posted in the comments on Thursday afternoon. #Problem #UKMT #Maths

Hello! having retired from teaching 5 yrs ago I have books of maths puzzles and interesting facts, & ones I used for research for my MA dissertation. Do you know anyone who might like them? I can make a list. Happy to give away for donations to @tearfund.bsky.social Thanks so much.

Niche offer but anyone mathsy in Leeds I have a ticket to this at lunchtime today if anyone wants it. Free to a good home. Please repost.

I isolated the 4xy term and then squared. Then substituted yΒ²=rΒ²-xΒ² as the equation of the circle. This gives a quartic in x (but actually a quadratic in xΒ²). Because the circle touches the ellipse, this quadratic must have discriminant zero, which gives two possible values of rΒ²: 1 or 2

...so 1 must be the "minor radius" (corresponding to the circle in the diagram) and sqrt(2) must be the "major radius", of the circle which just contains the ellipse.

This Japanese copy of The Mathematicians' Library is winging its way to a school in Grantham to play a part in rekindling an international exchange programme disrupted by the covid pandemic. I'd say that was a good cause! I've still got 1 copy each in *German* and *Spanish* to give away to...

Normal approximation to the binomial distribution in #ALevelMaths #MathsToday, and I wrote this question as an example of why we might use it in these days of fancy calculators with binomial distribution functions: If X~B(n, 0.4), find the least value of n such that P(X >= 200) > 0.1.

I've got one copy of *The Mathematicians' Library* to give away in each of four languages: Polish, German, Japanese, and Spanish. I'm offering them for free (including UK postage) & I'd like them to go somewhere that'd make good use of them. If you think *your* organisation or group would...

Complex numbers in #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths #MathsToday, so we looked at this problem: Explain why the absolute values of the real and imaginary parts of the square of a Gaussian integer give the legs of a Pythagorean triple.

Discussing my favourite two facts about random variables with my U6 #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths in #MathsToday: They're not random, and they're not variables. Has got me thinking about flying lemurs...

Approximating the Lorenz attractor with a chaotic leaky water wheel. The orange dot is the centre of mass of the water. It traces (a projection of) the familiar attractor as the wheel spins seemingly randomly left and right.

I think the maths historians would probably call this a 'surveyors' problem. Am in the process of making a sheet of them ... unless anyone already has such a thing. (The 40 and the 72 are the areas of the rectangles formed by the respective diagonals). #UKMathsChat #iTeachMath

A coordinate geometry question for discussion in #ALevelMaths #FurtherMaths #MathsToday. Most plumped for using perpendicular gradients, equations of lines and simultaneous equations. One went for a trig solution. I like this method (none of the class went for it... πŸ˜•): youtu.be/Df07cDPguPc?...
