been wondering a lot about complexity lately. like are there fundamental (or practical) limits to how complex something can be while avoiding the emergence of weird machines
So the horror of this is that it finds a RCE in Vapache in like, seven minutes. And the semantics for configuration that make this the case seem so complex that I have trouble believing that apache2 is actually so rigorous as to avoid them all. Like I'm starting to worry there's no bottom.

This is a good question, but the real conceptual distinction between P and NP is between problems with efficient algorithms and efficient verification. And we don’t know how to properly specify what “efficient” means.
I am not very well informed about algorithmic complexity things so apologies if this is a dumb question but is there a way to classify problems that are, say, exponential, for any reasonable size, but become subexponential at absurdly impossibly large sizes? Can this be formally defined?

Some context around this, from a markets person. Historically in LatAm, leftist victories have led to sharp losses over the ~3 months after an election where the left wins. Stocks also typically underperformed into those victories. But 3y post-election, returns for leftists have been *higher*.
It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning
Add this to the "AI is less introducing novel problems than it is pushing already-bad dynamics to the breaking point, for good and ill" pile
"AI isn't inventing new novel attack methods, it's accelerating the abuse of poor hygiene, whether it's password hygiene or failure to patch.” Here's my just published interview with Eric Schmitt, CISO of insurance & risk firm Sedgwick. www.infosecurity-magazine.com/interviews/s...
This is a general problem with a lot of these psychologically-scary-to-normies weapons, and also goes for a lot of hypothetical exotic cyberattacks with physical effects: it's usually much easier and cheaper to just lob explosives at something
It's a prescription medication, the amounts are diluted - you'd need hundreds of vials just to kill one person. It also makes a pretty poor weapon. The US and USSR both cancelled their botulinum programs in the 1960s because it was inferior in every way to nerve gasses and conventional explosives.

Re MattY's ridiculous "elections in other countries" take (also hi it's me I am other country)
Putting aside the empirical silliness, it's also a quite depressing attitude towards the world to me. Why wouldn't I be interested in what other people elsewhere are up to and care about what happens to them, just because they were born on a different patch of dirt or hold different passports?
"It’s a move from a capital-light leading advanced capitalist sector (the 2010s platform model) to a capital-intensive leading advanced capitalist sector (the 2020s AI model)."
On the day that Meta announces they want to raise $95 billion through new equity, I wrote on a big change that AI is bringing to mainstream financial markets. siliconempires.substack.com/p/the-return...

in contrast tho, for most people reading this, your work is 99% simple stuff that open models were sufficient for last year
If you are still on the “cheap Chinese models will take share from US labs” cope train you need to get off. US labs are now distilling their own models to compete across the Pareto frontier, so Haiku is better model than Kimi at 1/8th the cost. The only reason to use it is if you MUST self-host.

I would temper my expectations about a new era coming to Serbia. The election winners have virtually the same geopolitical positions as Vucic; most previous election winners (Vucic included!) ran on anticorruption; the student movement is above all populist. Good luck to them but let’s be realistic.
