my dad always said "we come from the mediterranean branch of the swedes" to explain why our family is Like That so honestly i think it's fate

The single most important skill for a self employed person is acting like you believe you have a real job. I have mastered this about 75% of the time.

oh also! I'm less than 500 away from 50k on YouTube, so if you didn't know I had a YouTube account, now is your last chance to say you got in at the ground floor!

I can't help but think about the nerves of steel those people had to cultivate to do high-speed flips on a slippery surface with blades on their feet only for figure skating to have a reputation as a sissy sport

instead of arguing about whether AI art is art we should put to bed the asinine question of what "counts" as "art" and just all agree that AI art sucks

I studied music at uni and every year began with a debate on the question of "what is music?" I went through SO MANY definitions ("noise with artistic intent!" "art created on the medium of time!") before concluding that the only good answer to "what is music?" is "fuck off and let me practice."

full respect to that second group's intentions but please do not accuse me of not caring about my appearance lmfao i put a lot of work into being this cute ✨✌🏻

this post brought to you by everyone who asks if my Big Baby Taylor (a 15/16ths size guitar) is cartoonishly humungous or if I'm just a teeny tiny baby. The answer is that I'm a teeny tiny baby (read: completely normal sized woman)

LOVE when insects are so fuzzy and round and big-eyed they actually manage to activate my maternal instincts. Ten million generations of foremothers sitting in my brainstem trying to convince me this moth can breastfeed. Being a living thing is so unserious <3

An enlightening essay in @theconversation.com by Benoit, Helm, & Bordy about the recognizing Indigenous science for its important role in the original discoveries of fossils in southern Africa, especially trace fossils (tracks). 🧪🐾🪨⚒️🌍 #ichnology

somebody is in my youtube comments replying to dozens of unrelated comment threads to say that Jesus and Elijah are about to be reincarnated as women and then join together in a lesbian marriage, and I just wanna say this is one of the best psychoses I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing

i didn't THINK i was systematically collecting all the men with scandinavian names in the dc area and then i hopped on partiful and added a harald, hans, anders, and gustav to an event and uhhhhh

making a video about Charon and Pluto and being flooded with comments saying "this is why Charon should've been called Proserpina" is making me ornery all over again about the internet romanticisation of the myth that was, until very recently, known as "the rape of Persephone"

as a woman on the internet, there's no amount of stupid that you can sarcastically pretend to be that will actually read as sarcasm, because there's no limit to how stupid your interlocutor is willing to believe you are. In a sane world this would be funny but this guy WOULD just believe me 😭

demanding science explain human consciousness is like demanding science explain constellations. you drew a picture around the stars and then asked why the stars have a picture on them. checkmate atheists, i guess

love telling the "humans can't be animals because we have consciousness" crowd that I also don't believe in consciousness like it's kind of an oversimplification of my actual beliefs, but it makes them 404 so bad I LOVE it

AND responding to "I don't believe in a categorically special human consciousness" with "what, so you're not thinking?" is equivalent to responding to the above with "what, so you don't believe in stars?"

i love social media scicomm cause sometimes you're blowing people's minds with mass extinction poetry and sometimes you're scrolling through science papers idly wondering if you could get away with naming your daughter "oscarella"

love telling the "humans can't be animals because we have consciousness" crowd that I also don't believe in consciousness like it's kind of an oversimplification of my actual beliefs, but it makes them 404 so bad I LOVE it

The UK's biggest and best dinosaur-themed event - #DinoConUK - happens July 25th-26th at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. Tickets aren't yet on sale but places for accommodation are, and we're taking vendor applications too. Put it in the diary now, we can't wait to see you!

friend of a friend: wait, you're THIRTY?? me: yep him: I thought you were like. At MOST 22. me: ...is that why you were mansplaining so bad earlier? him: no I do that to everyone

scientists should study why putting on a waistcoat makes me feel like the most attractive person in the world. why is the most robust guard against my self-image issues... a jacket with no sleeves. how does this work. it shouldn't.

"you're not allowed to reply until you demonstrate an understanding of what OP was actually saying" ... probably wouldn't actually fix social media because people will find ways to dig their heels in and die on stupid hills no matter what, BUT god I wish we had this feature anyway 😭

As a teacher, I wholeheartedly agree. Reading comprehension is poor and growing worse as the years go by. I wish there was an option for micro posts: add a reading comprehension quiz which would lock people from leaving a comment until complete.

I'm one stupidass reply away from a very public and embarrassing crashout and I think that's a sign I need to step away from the microblogging apps we are in a reading comprehension crisis

my bitchy too-woke opinion is that people find it harder to clock satire by women because deep down they don't believe that women are smart enough to be funny on purpose

coffee with cream and no sugar is superior to both coffee with cream and sugar, and coffee with nothing, but they're all pretty good and I respect all three choices coffee with sugar and no cream is an insane drink for psychopaths

Unless the 19 year old who explained this to me the other day was lying to take the mickey (which would be hilarious and she's so valid if that was indeed the plan), the 6 7 joke is that it doesn't mean anything. In case anyone else was wondering. On a semi-related note, you just lost the game.

the electronic signs on DC metro platforms say "BRD" while the train is at the platform, which always unscrolled into "Be Right Dere" in my head. I didn't think it actually stood for that, but I couldn't think of anything else that made sense and I'd never bothered to ask. Anyway it's "boarding"

was completely fine but now i'm sobbing bc i remembered that (as far as i know) every language has a word for mother that sounds something like "mama" because that's the first consonant that babies can reliably produce

i know some people believe that if a region has popular anti-gay beliefs in systemic politics then it deserves to be bombed to rubble, but we'd have to move half the music industry outta nashville first and i just think that's too much of a hassle

the 1950s pop music hyperfixation has taken me to google maps where i am currently staring at lubbock looking for insight into what was going on with buddy holly & the crickets, which is how i just found out that there's an american windmill museum (it is in lubbock) (it was not there in the 1950s)

the american windmill museum boasts the world's largest collection of historic american windmills, a superlative that raises fascinating questions like "where is the second-largest collection of historic american windmills?" and "are we sure west texas is real?"

putting together an elite team of people with music history autism and people with windmill autism for a road trip to lubbock, tx. not sure what else we'll get up to but i think this could be the matchup of the century

the only upside of being allergic to raw apples is that i don't have to follow or care about whatever's going on in the apple cultivar snob world pink lady: makes my face hurt granny smith: face hurt red delicious: oop look it's face hurtin time

I was feeling slightly smug about not being one of the people who mix up Jane Goodall and "Diane" Fossey and then I looked her up and learned I've been spelling Dian Fossey's name wrong for years 🙈 Never get complacent, people!

Hemophilia is kind of a mean name for a disease. "Hey check it out this guy *loves* bleeding." It's got "stop hitting yourself" energy
