Its funny how much we know about the English and how little they know about us. But yeah going door to door trick or treating was not what you guys did. But I have some notion the Scottish had a version of it?

I don't recall ever going trick-or-treating when I was a kid (in the UK in the 1970s/80s). Getting dressed up and going door-to-door was more of an American thing, right? Or is this just me? #Halloween

Without getting into ancient origins and all that, my memory of English cousins visiting in Octobers in the 1980s was that Halloween was our thing and Guy Fawkes was their thing. Halloween is only mentioned in passing in Adrian Mole. It was brought to England by Strictly and the gays.

i think citizenship should be given, no questions asked, to anyone who comes to Ireland and sticks it out for say 3 years. 3 years of these winters - cold, wet, dark, miserable, buses that randomly don't show up, and you wanna stay? Welcome. This island is a monastery, you are a child of God.

Good news but important to remember that this student, along with 114 others, has undergone months of additional stress and anxiety because Jim O'Callaghan & the Dept of Defence 'unlawfully and irrationally' denied them study visas. www.rte.ie/news/courts/...

For the education of the general public, I thought I’d reveal the most unhinged possible response to this post:

ye. i never see anyone talking about the knock on effects. ok, so, AI swallows all the tech or office jobs. All those people lose money to spend, every cafe, restaurant or bar they visited. Places were people get lunch every day etc. It would all die! not sure capitalists know how capitalism works

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Always enjoy my annual Ossian seminar, when they think we're going to be talking about druids and I tell them there aren't any, and then launch into the division of labour

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Finger on the pulse as always. These fascist incels can’t even win when they’re rigging the elections.

Like I'm very happy Lula won I just wish the world would move on from Somebody versus Fascist who wants the world to end elections. It's fucking draining

has anyone on here ever been asked to write a letter of recommendation for someone applying for Irish citizenship?? I have questions

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

It’s nearly time for our Halloween book swap! Taking place Saturday 31st Booktober, 11am-12.30pm, at An Síol, 19 Manor Street. As usual we’ll have a great range of books for all ages - and if you have any books with ghosts or ghouls you’d like to bring along, so much the better!

Dear America (and Israel), this is the key factor. High turnout is the key factor. Not voting is not protest - it is surrender.

Todd Kendall@alpinemigrant.bsky.social

Certainly Trump tried - but the Lula side has highlighted turnout as the key factor.

I had letterboxd cowardice recently where I watched a low budget film I didn't like but the director wrote a long heartfelt post on the page so I became very worried that they would read me saying something like "a good nap ruined! 2 stars!"
