I'm a little late, but I really enjoyed this year's Freiburg edition of @smashingconf.com. A big thank you to everyone involved; the team and organization were fantastic, and I feel really thankful for having gotten to meet so many amazing humans 😍 Can't wait for next year!

Hendrik's work on this has been amazing. I'm hosting my own instance and the setup was literally "run it". Incredibly well done!

A quick video update about Chatto!

I recently saw a friend set up their atproto account and realized how confusing the whole system is. I wish atproto had a much better cross-app login experience. Is there any work being done to unify/improve the UI/UX of the login flow? I think I recall seeing some ideas but I can't find them.

Another issue that came up was email verification. Bluesky showed a need to verify the user's email, but then the verification email comes from Eurosky. Clicking the button redirects back to Bluesky.

I wish the boundary between an account and an app was much more clearly defined. I've heard the term "atmosphere account" being thrown around but its not really used in a user facing way. It would be great if atproto had a unified name and badge similar to "Login in with Google/Apple/..."

specifically, logging in to Bluesky with a non-bsky PDS account is weird. You're entering your password on a non-PDS domain, under Bluesky branding. Sometimes it detects the hosting, sometimes not. Shouldn't the login just always be handled by the PDS provider?

very excited for this!

This is the coolest article I've ever written. Genuinely. All of you should read it.

Compression and LLMs are trying to solve the exact same problem: predicting what comes next. @anniesexton.com's interactive essay walks us through the basics of compression to reveal its surprising overlap with every language model you've ever used.

I'm working on my website and need some icons! Do I know anybody (or someone who knows somebody) who can create cute cartoon-artsy / "kawaii style" icons? (think a laptop, book, etc) and has availability? Would love some recommendations 😊

I said it there but want to share: For most projects and people, atproto is an implementation detail, not a feature. If we as a community want widespread adoption of our tech, we need to move away from the jargon and offer something for non-technical folks.

Testing an idea that I've had for a while, but I think is even better suited for atproto Internet, meet plts.at

Just found this nice post on the topic: bsky.app/profile/dame...

dame@dame.is

hard pill to swallow for atproto developers/creators: 99% of potential users either do not care about, value, understand, or want to “own their own data” i see so many apps/projects lead with this “value prop”, but it’s not an important or meaningful consideration for most people

So, I built a small app that tracks all Hacker News submissions over time, and allows you to set up custom triggers and basically curate your own daily summary. After using it for a few weeks, I am not sure what to make of it. Would this be interesting to anyone else? Happy to invite you to it :)

This could be taken in many directions: - Sentiment analysis and summaries - Granular insights - Daily digest of top posts / most commented / top rising - Custom notifications for certain sites/users/rankings - Surface through a bot, email, Pushover, ... - A mix of the above

TIL the German weather service is on Bluesky. Awesome!

i want to do a little ✨ ama about atproto ✨ in this thread. no question is too simple if you’ve been curious about atproto but don’t know much (anything?) about it, ask any question and i’ll try to explain it in my own words. (+ would love to hear from friends who aren’t very active on bsky)

had the same happen when I moved PDS. This experience can be much better!

dan@danabra.mov

@alexbenzer.com @samuel.fm pls fix this — this is how bluesky greeted me on an old computer that doesn't know i moved hosting. it is super confusing it's trying to get me to sign into my old PDS and i suspect this would again break the app just detect that i moved hosting and don't show it

Wonderful article on (the end of?) reading, writing, social media, AI, learning, thinking, the state of politics and more. "Writing is the way people figure out what they think, and how to convey those thoughts to someone who doesn’t already share them." www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

theatlantic.comThe End of Reading Is HereOptimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.

I noticed that Bsky does not seem to pick up likes on the feed for this post, probably to do with the edit? In details view it works fine

The truth is, telling a non-developer that "You can store your data on any PDS of your choice" will just lead to them going back to X where you didn't have to think about any of this. Most folks don't care.

I will be honest and say that I really don't think the average user cares about any of this. Maybe that's a good thing and the community is just naturally smaller than other platforms. But it can also hinder broader adoption and the funding that goes along with it unless the platform competes.

Had to check in for a flight today and the site kept saying "Unexpected Error" when I tried to enter my data. Got a React error in the console saying "maximum update depth exceeded". I was able to check in by typing more slowly. I guess only web developers are allowed to check in online 😅

Seeing this month's "who is hiring" post on HN, I had a fun idea to visualize the data points over the years as I expected them to be a nice visualization of the current market in tech. Earlier this year was the first month ever in which less people posted jobs than wanted to be hired 🫠

The ratio would be "immune" to this, so I think that's the more interesting metric compared to the absolute values (which don't say much). This is just a fun experiment, I'm not a data science wiz :)

Oh and finally, of course I managed to share the wrong image 💀 In 2011 there was a month where there were two who's hiring posts because the automatic script HN used broke, and the chart shows the official (but "wrong") data post. This is the one with the canonical post as a source:

A thing I want to point out about this is that I think it's a great use case for LLMs. It's a small-ish thing, one off, just for myself. Previously I would have thought about it but never done it. Now it only takes a few minutes. As bad as AI is in many cases, there are genuinely good use cases.

I do want to highlight that this data might be a bit misleading. The comment counts are obviously very dependent on HN usage itself, so more offers/seekers could just be because more people were using HN. That said, the chart timelines do match the tech sector changes, so make of it what you will.

Working on creating a demo visualisation of my Kubernetes cluster that runs in the browser. Just got network visualisation working. Each image is its own actual bit of running code using a fetch-like API to talk to other pods, and the network emits events when this happens.
