yup.

thehandbasket.coRepublicans don’t have a Nazi problem—they are the Nazi problemA spate of recent revelations have shown the ideologies and their adherents are one and the same.

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

The thing about Milei is that he's a posturing hack, but he's a genuinely smart posturing hack who at least correctly diagnosed many of the issues facing Argentina, which is more than anyone running against him did. The bar is underground here, of course.

Bill@bill-of-lefts.bsky.social

what is an *actual*, *specific* opinion that you hold that will be unpopular on bluesky ? Mine is that Javier Milei is horrible but probably did a better job in fixing Argentina’s hyperinflation crisis than any of his opponents would have

If still debating whether Donald Trump or Elon Musk willfully crippled Ukraine's missile defense, helping to slay innocent civilians, you are a rube. If the U.S. President had no role, then an oligarch governs national security. If not, the U.S. President serves Russia. Both answers are mortifying.

Yeah, this man should not be allowed to practice law, and any failure to take away his ability to practice law after all of this would be a part of the end of the rule of law in America.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Blanche on CBS says his suit against Alaska is "asking the court to step in where the Alaska Supreme Court didn't, which is to look at federal law and if necessary to allow a process for Alaska to decide who should be certified as the winner." (So, the voters won't get to decide. Got it.)

Something that's not being said. The REASON why Blanche and Bill Essayli are so defiantly violating the Constitution is bc John Roberts said they can't be prosecuted so long as they're following Trump's illegal orders. Blanche's criminality arises DIRECTLY out of Trump v. US.

(This actually isn't good, and Brazil has already had some extremely illiberal laws applying to Internet platforms. But there are probably some institutional judicial reforms that could help.)

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Lula is to my left. Magyar is to my right. And I don’t care in the slightest, because they are the candidates of democracy against autocracy.

I’m not sure the Panopticon is still a relevant metaphor. The point there was that a concealed machinery of surveillance could make everyone behave AS IF surveilled, even though the watchers could only observe a few people at once. We seem to have effectively superceded that technical limitation.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

The Panopticon was a thought experiment but the technology is now genuinely there to make it a reality and we have to grapple with what that means for us as a society. /yes, I am aware that others countries had this debate and went with total surveillance decades ago.

That it'll fail because they lack sufficient consolidation and centralized control does not make it trivial that the president of the United States is trying to steal elections and produce an illegitimate sham Congress. It is open rebellion against the Constitution and morally tantamount to treason.

I really wish more of Silicon Valley would wake up to the fact that the backlash to this is going to be massive and the blast radius will impact many other companies as well.

i wonder what percentage of the electorate now understands that this man and maybe 75 other people like him are actively trying to destroy our lives. that he is the biggest national security threat we have faced, even moreso than bin laden or whoever. its got to be dawning on more and more people

The school year is at full speed, and so is our Czech team's project Liberty to Schools. 😎 Just this past two weeks, the team hosted five talks in high schools around the country, introducing liberalism and basic economics, and having discussions with students about politics.

Gotta say, claiming that "there was no way" for you to anticipate the thing that literally everyone else absolutely knew was going to happen is not exactly a compelling argument. It seems like an argument that you shouldn't be a Senator.

Susan Collins on Kavanaugh: "I'm very disappointed in his his vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. There was no way for me to anticipate that."

JD - I've got 15 free minutes before my son's hockey practice ends, so let me see how many of Trump's enrichment schemes you didn't see that I can remind you of. 1/ First one is easy: Trump has executed over 30,000 stock trades, many on inside information, netting him millions.

The name of New Mexico is funny because it's one of those things that you'd think is really simple (oh, it's it used to be part of old Mexico, so we'll call it New Mexico!), but it's much more complex New Mexico as the name for the area predates Mexico by several hundred years!

Owen Barcala@obarcala.bsky.social

But, like, New America wouldn't make any sense because this is still the original America and... You know what, forget it

Ten years ago today. In just the last few days: Trump made a deal for the U.S. to buy Russian diesel, an economic lifeline for Putin; he and Elon Musk blamed each other for an order that slowed down Starlink satellite connectivity over Ukraine...

As the Trump administration pushes the bounds of executive power, the DOJ unit known as the Office of Legal Counsel has affirmed some of its most controversial actions — even as experts question their legitimacy and some are later struck down by the courts.

I consider myself a fairly compassionate & empathetic person, but the more I read about people in this particular demographic -- wealthy Gen X white men radicalized by social media & group chats -- the more I loathe them. I understand them *too well* to sympathize. They are contemptible & weak.
