For the first time in several years, I will be missing the @ecpr.bsky.social General Conference. In my defence, I’ve had my hands quite full for the last two and a half months (see below). If (unlike me) you are at the conference, consider submitting your paper to @prxjournal.bsky.social!

Marta Lorimer@mlorimer.bsky.social

Some personal/professional news. Over the next few months, I’ll be a bit quieter (and less responsive) than usual. I have a very good reason: your email finds me with at least one arm full.

We’re open to submissions in the field of politics (broadly defined). The journal is open access, and if you are at an ECPR institution, you can get a fee waiver: www.tandfonline.com/journals/prx... I’ll be back on the conference circuit next year - hope to see everyone in 2027!

Le Pen has announced she is running. To deal with problem a), she has announced that she will appeal today’s decision (which also helps with b because it upholds a narrative of innocence - not appealing is an implicit admission of guilt).

Marta Lorimer@mlorimer.bsky.social

On the other hand, it’s hard to see how she campaign a) it she cannot physically do so (which could be the case at least for the early stages of the campaign) and b) when her adversaries will want to point out constantly that she has been found guilty of embezzlement.

Couple of thoughts on the Le Pen trial while we wait to hear about her decision on whether to stand or not. She has been found guilty, but could still run. So the judges have not made the decision for her - and it’s a difficult decision.

But Bardella has never been put under any real kind of scrutiny, especially not of the kind he’d face as a presidential candidate. There is no guarantee he would withstand the demands of a presidential campaign.

Her electorate might not care too much, but as. Presidential candidate, she’d have to attract beyond that. Responding to critiques also leave her less time to develop her own programmatic ideas (though given their thinness, that might not be too bad.)

As for Bardella, he has certain strengths. His youth might make him feel like a new face (though he’s been around long enough that he will not feel quite as new) and he can speak to a centre-right electorate that Le Pen does not have access to. Some polls show him doing better than Le Pen.

Le Pen might still want to run. Unlike Bardella, she has acquired a lot of experience with presidential campaigns, and may feel like a safer bet as the unquestioned leader of the party.

We conclude with a rich roundtable to end a remarkable day — from why mainstream parties keep radicalising on migration, to the human stories and emotions behind the numbers, and why governing migration is structurally so difficult. Thank you to all speakers, chairs, and participants!

The conversation continues with a fantastic panel, 'Migration Policy in the Context of the Judiciary and EU Institutions' that explores the government's conflict with the judiciary — with a particular focus on the Italy-Albania Protocol, and how Italy may be reshaping EU migration policies.

We continued with another incredible panel, 'Migration, Populism, and the Far Right' — unpacking populist rhetoric and migration governance, from party communication to how voters hold far-right governments accountable when migration keeps rising despite their promises.

We started with an amazing panel, 'Migration Policy: Externalisation, Securitisation, and Local Actors', from on-the-ground NGO practices to the wider geopolitical impact of Italy's migration model beyond its borders.

9/ This is a regime transition: reconfiguring after systemic capture. Success will depend on if the new government can sequence reform without triggering economic or political backlash, build credible enforcement against entrenched interests, and sustain public support beyond the initial rupture.
