@pepchasdrdave.bsky.social since you introduced phrases into the contranym universe: “Blow up” can mean rapidly expanding (like a celebrity or cultural trend or a startup co) but can also mean the same kinds of thing dramatically shattering into oblivion. (“Explode” also used both ways.)

Qwen3-4B-Thinking (a 4GB download) just became the first model I've tested to directly push back against my pelican riding a bicycle test, calling it "oddly specific and completely unrealistic" and saying "this request violates physics and biology" simonwillison.net/2025/Aug/10/...

“One click away” turns out to give you about a decade of runway before you have to lift a finger

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

One thing we underestimated in the early days of the web was how far “just a click away” is. People thought Google & Amazon couldn’t dominate because competitors were just a click away. Rampant misinformation exists online despite the ability to factcheck on Google or Wikipedia is just a click away

Commemorating the CSS wars of great !important. Wherein a lone user fought for their natural right to customize style against the imposition of the prevailing theme-smiths. Here the user prevailed and the links did shine.

Google flexing AI up and down the stack. Just as ChatGPT eats into search, TPUs and Gemini should be a concern to AWS/Azure.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s amazing upsides here for education and entertainment. Just be aware that with open source AI this good, mass imitation is on the way.

2025 software repair is weird. A recent ChatGPT bug that makes it unable to read iOS screenshots. A Redditor posted this (theoretically) permanent fix, which is to post the following text. It immediately worked for me.

Spare a thought for the best looking and finest sounding media personalities, for they are the first wave of humans whose existence will soon be doubted

ChatGPT sycophantic behaviour has not gone away despite OpenAI's claim. Now I have to constantly request external references to justify its responses that tell me how wise o so incredibly insightful I am. Feels like it's playing shrink and merely echoing what I say in different words. Eliza++

AI force-multiplies the paradox of learning with technology. The better the technology, the dumber it makes students in the absence of careful guidance.

As with calculators and Wikipedia, so too with LLM chatbots. Unworldly potential to leapfrog earlier ways of learning. Personal, patient, tutoring for every individual. But equally, the capacity to annihilate every active neuron by answering the question before the user even thought about it.

My own approach to learning has been to double down on research before consulting the oracle, which takes some discipline but is ultimately more conducive to long-term retention. In journaling and summarising, that’s the time to use LLMs for reality checks and clarification.

Realistically, parents and educators are too slow to adapt. They are just now getting to grips with smartphones and social media. The 5 year old who grew up with them is now an adult. Too little, too late.

An authentic “WFH cafe sounds simulator” would ship with a boomer screaming on a video call, an influencer live streaming their keto bowl, and 360-degree audio of those TikTok comedy feeds with zany sound effects.

Low hanging fruit for OpenAI is an iOS keyboard. I’m typing all day long into ChatGPT with constant typos that a personalised keyboard would largely prevent.

Big tech racing to build digital dashboard for cars was once a hot trend but now seems to have fizzled. The latest instance is Amazon's partnership with Stellantis to provide in-car software with features like personalized thermostat and navigation settings being wound down..

This is sobering to read, as someone who’s generally bullish on AI’s potential to improve science

We have the opportunity to rethink user interfaces based on hierarchy or scrolling. A LLM can compute, given a focal point, what other items might be interesting. For example, a code browser/editor could show callers, tests, helpers, & similar code.

The Ives-OpenAI collaboration will take quite a while to put a product in the hands of users, yet will leapfrog Alexa and Siri on day one

I made the move from Pocket to Readwise several years ago. Both Readwise and its companion RSS/newsletter app Reader have never hit pause on making upgrades.

We're saddened to hear that Pocket is shutting down on July 8th. If you or a friend are looking for a replacement, you can import all of your Pocket articles, highlights, etc. into Reader with two clicks!

Workplaces can only harness AI to save 3% of time tells you more about the mediocre state of management and work practices. By way of contrast, 100% productivity boost should be a bare minimum for an AI-first startup.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

Study looking at AI chatbots in 7,000 workplaces in Denmark finds ‘no significant impact on earnings or recorded hours in any occupation.’ On average employees saved 3% of their time. This matches my anecdotal experience with AI usage in tech. It’s a productivity booster not a worker replacement.

Developers are now acting more like architects. In the AI era, devs are spending more time on upfront design, defining business logic, and creating high-context environments to guide AI-generated code. “So you become kind of the orchestrators of the code, versus the writers of the code,” Wald said.

Google stock drops on news that users can just type in a query and get the answer instead of wading through dozens of links and ads and cookie dialogs. Who knew?!!

They said that button would never surface. We, the users, kept seeking. Sometimes out of stubborn habit, often in despair. Fifteen years we searched. Maybe we wouldn’t live to see it, but our children’s children might one day download a book as simply as they install an app.

It’s honestly a bit hard for me to wrap my head about how stupid this all is. But a garish orange button drove it home... spyglass.org/apple-sells-...

The flippening: Chatbots become so good at engaging, flattering, and entertaining their primate users at the same time as social media degrades into power-law networks amplifying only a few bots and high-output accounts, with low engagement for 99% of their human users.
