I'm pleased to finally introduce the new michaeljriser.com, built with @ghost.org. There are words to backfill, & more coming (including a new piece shortly), but this took tons of work, from images (my own photography), backend setup, to custom code. I hope it's somewhere you'll want to hang out.
Check this out if you want to read a bunch of ex-journalists' thoughts on the current (gestures to the smoking crater) state of things, and also me being very very nostalgic about the games magazine era
Yeah. I've been out of work for years. I'm surviving on freelance stuff that can't pay the bills. I'm lucky enough to have a spouse with a decent job and a house we own (which comes with its own set of financial nightmares given insurance rates, but that's another story). Many aren't so lucky.
I've managed to get gigs outside of gaming journalism but I'm only surviving because I'm in the middle of nowhere, while new job openings almost universally want on-site in New York or LA.
The dream is all but dead and it both breaks my heart and terrifies me, but mostly I'm just angry these days.
The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated.
In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.
The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
A stunning defeat for a Trump-aligned right-wing leader in Europe.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, whose government cultivated close ties with Donald Trump and his family, has conceded defeat to a student-led opposition movement in a historic parliamentary election.
Thanks so much! You can download graphics here or order your own posters, stickers, and preorder sweatshirts & t-shirts!

The Sixth Sense is a wild movie from Toni Collette’s perspective. Her kid is obviously haunted but hey the ghost is doing free therapy on him and that’s probably a win all things considered.
HOLY SHIT. In a sworn statement yesterday, an ICE agent told a federal judge that an ICE flight to Equatorial Guinea had been cancelled and so couldn't be used to bring Ahmed Soliman back to the United States.
The plane just landed in Equatorial Guinea.

I have a famously unpopular opinion that Argento generally makes very bad films, but I do happen to enjoy Suspiria. Dunno if I'll make it tonight as today was another real bad fuckin day, but definitely come join #folkhorrorfriday for a good flick and good company if you're able.
Critic friends: I'm repping SILVER SCREAMERS and you *HAVE TO* see it. It's a doc about a group of seniors who get together to make a short horror film. It's a love letter to independent filmmaking, realizing what horror can do, and the joy and pains of growing old. It's so good it made me cry.

Remember the viral Darth Vader public comment over Flock? Well, San Diego is actually coming closer to cancelling their $2M Flock contract. This comes after a councilmember flipped his support of Flock, and in response, Anthony Ralphs, the man behind the Darth Vader suit, bought him flowers.
that's real weird because there were Maine Indivisible groups in your office every single day during the Kavanaugh confirmation repeatedly telling you he was going to do exactly that
Democrats are preparing to investigate Musk if they win control of the House in November, Politico reports.
Potential probes would focus on his DOGE leadership, federal job cuts, alleged data breaches, government contracts and Starlink’s role in Ukraine.

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.
I'm actually here for #horrorwatch for a change because we're not doing anything tonight! I've never seen The Night of the Hunter, so this is all new to me. I'm familiar with it kinda, but mostly from stills and stuff. Let's see what this is all about.
Quite the movie. The ending fell rather flat for me, but outside of that I was really impressed. Sure a memorable-looking film, and musical in a really interesting way. That's one I'll definitely watch again. Thanks, all! #horrorwatch

A very musical film, this, which I didn't expect. This is more sorta... almost artsy than I expected. Between some of the monolithic or contrastingly really dreamy shots, the musical interludes, the painterly setpieces and almost stage-like setup of some bits. Quite something. #horrorwatch
Was it common to refer to a hardship as a crown of thorns? Feels really weird. Or was it supposed to sound slightly like sacrilege coming out of this guy's mouth? #horrorwatch

I said Mitchum had the face for this, but he really does. He can look so happy and charming and then just get this sudden dull, dead mask over his face while still intoning the same cheerful, smirking voice. Very good shit. #horrorwatch

Me oh my this bedroom shot with the stark blacks all around the pyramidal white shape of the bedroom walls, so good. There have been a few really memorable shots in this so far. #horrorwatch

I never find films of this era especially horrific, and this always struck me as more thriller-y, but whatever. I'm long overdue for having seen something so legendary. #horrorwatch
Democracy is not something we inherit. It is something we protect, election by election, vote by vote. Early voting is already open in many states and Election Day is just 18 days away.
Update: WE ARE BACK IN! We can post again. This was utter bullshit on the biggest early vote effort in history. But it will not stop what we're building.
No Kings means no kings in the White House or in Silicon Valley.
Update: about 4 hours later and we still don't have admin access so we still can't post to the No Kings instagram account.
This isn't slowing down the the 3,000+ early vote events today. We will drive the biggest early vote in history.
But this should be a flashing alarm about what's to come.
You ever just wake up and say, "Wow, I'm really not okay"? I think I need to maybe have an extremely long meditation today before I do literally anything. I didn't wake up on the wrong side of the bed, I woke up underneath it.
