I'd like to PR a way to define "internal" attributes on Eloquent models that cannot be accessed from outside in favor of richer attributes, e.g returning a "Money" object and blocking amount/currency from being accessed. Any suggestions for a better API?

No doubt that LLMs are a net positive when it comes to productivity, but I think a key element coding tools (e.g “build me this”) miss is the iterative, discovering process. As you build something, you go “oh, maybe this API would be better this way”, or “that component should be split in two”.

Chatting with an AI and building allows me to retain a good chunk of that process — that’s why I feel for non-greenfield projects, this is better than using AI code editors. At least so far.

the new iOS photos app is disgustingly horrible I swear that alone would make me consider switching to Android if I didn’t have other apple devices hopefully they undo it, or allow us to go back to the old one at some point

Writing code that works is the bare minimum. The job is not just about that, but writing code that *is easy to change*. It's a bit frustrating whenever architecture content is deemed as "overengineering"; apps don't have to and shouldn't grow into unmaintainable balls of mud.

This might be a bit of an uncommon take nowadays, but I think using LLMs to learn something from scratch is a bad idea. They’re absolutely fantastic to ask questions to and go deeper in a subject, but compressing pages of documentation into a few responses must warrant some information loss.

Also, you don’t know what you don’t know. When reading books, docs, etc, you’re exposed to additional, related information as you read. With LLMs, it’s easy to only learn what you *think* is important.

A good exercise when building your models is to think “how would this be modeled if there was *no* database?” Of course, IRL, it exists and you’re bound to it and will have to make some concessions. Still, I feel it’s very valuable.

My tip to eat clean when dieting is… to just eat clean I feel a massive urge to eat crap (oreos, sushi, burgers, whatever) for 3-4 days, and then it stops and I feel absolutely no special desire to eat anything like that.

I think a major reason I’ve been enjoying this place more than the <<other place>> is there is barely any content about AI. Opening the other app is suffocating. Every 3 tweets there’s a “AGI has been achieved”, “AI just nuked this profession” or something like that 😅

Since this sort of blew up on <<the other place>>, I recorded a video on it, but I still don’t think it’s the best medium. Would anyone be interested in going over this topic on a podcast? Preferably someone who disagrees with me but has an open mind to the idea :-)

Big MVC wants us to think the left structure is simpler than the right structure. It's a psyop guys

People are using LLMs summarize books. Do you really think you can compress a 300-page book into 2 pages without losing a *bunch* of information? There are people summarizing Dostoyevsky on Reddit, what's even the point 😭

I can't recommend Yaz enough. Take this opportunity.

Hey all, I've got some open bandwidth to take on some work! if you know anyone looking for help with any stack in #Laravel, #Inertia (React Or Vue) #Livewire etc, let me know I'd love to help out.

CV tip: write more concrete achievements/feats on your job experience. - Contributed to the infrastructure team - Fixed bugs reported by users ... These are not very interesting. They all sound too generic, and they don't really catch anyone's attention or start conversations.

Something like "Optimized our infrastructure through x, y, and z, decreasing costs by 54% and reducing our API's p99 response time from 700ms to 97ms over the span of one year" is much more interesting *and* they lead to conversations in interviews.

I've interviewed a fair amount of candidates, and it was much easier to engage in *interesting* discussions that really showed the candidate's skills if I had specific situations to discuss. Just my 2 cents 🫡

Is there an AI service that helps generate B-rolls? My use case is like... whenever I'm explaining something in a video. e.g I'm talking about relations within a system, and there's a nice animation of boxes and lines show up between them. Something like that.

I find there are very few situations where mocks are actually desired. One of them is sometimes when you need to test infrastructure and the upstream provider does not provide a good way for that. Instead, I much prefer using in-memory fakes — they read much better and are much easier to maintain.
