NEW BRIGHT SPOTS: Even on 100% gas power, heat pumps cut emissions by ~48% and EVs by about half. The authors of an “electrification doesn’t cut emissions” paper made a series of compounding mistakes and used misleading assumptions. Here's why. janrosenow.substack.com/p/heat-pumps...

I, personally, would not go on the record with a reporter to announce I’m in favor of destroying the playground my kid is currently loving because I drive to work once a week (and the road still wouldn’t go there anyway), but everyone lives their lives differently I guess

The only way you can build a small 5-6 story apartment building under these rules is if you add a second (exterior) stair that fully complies with the regular building code. This is the case of doing nothing and trying to get a headline out of it. #sanfrancisco www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

Here’s how this played out in Long Beach, where the grocery workers union prevailed with the punitive self-checkout rules they’ve been pushing around the country: “Of 13 stores included in a city survey, 10 said that they had closed down some or all of their self-check out kiosks.”

I do think this is a really insidious result of all of the “government is useless and corrupt” propaganda that’s been pushed over the years - people don’t realize how much worse these assholes have made it this level of corruption really is not normal!

There's a case to be made for letting cities adopt stricter local codes, as a way of letting cities adopt life-saving rules (for seismic safety, etc.) that don't have political support statewide. Sadly, this process often seems to be used to adopt make-work rules that do little or nothing for safety

Patrick Siegman@siegman.biz

Why do elected officials adopt costly local building code amendments that are stricter than the state code? Sometimes, they do it at the urging of UA Local 38, the Plumbers & Pipefitters union, because "will open up employment opportunities to fulfill the new requirements..."
