replace the California constitution with an assertion of parliamentary sovereignty. https://signal.me/#eu/l0xilq2pPjD/c746iENf6KNApNhIBMZ8bniWD7yZkQ6TSZcFl3BJaKpNf33aVb6k 📍Oakland, California.

Haha the units button transforms muscovado sugar and black treacle into their American counterparts. Reminds me of how it is such a pain on Linux to get 24 hour time, but US date format. I want my dark brown sugar to be measured in grams pls! 😅
It’s hard to beat an old-school pud: #RecipeOfTheDay is Sticky Toffee Pudding! www.nigella.com/recipes/stic...
Didn't know this was illegal lol
On Tue., Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. ET, I'm presenting my IBC proposal to a committee work group (one of many) to allow elevators to open into exits if dwelling units are also allowed to open directly into them. Essentially it would remove the "corridor penalty" for adding an elevator to a single-stair...

my cheesecake factory observation is that it is pretty pricey, but everyone dresses causally. It is setup for your date night but it doesn't seem to get treated that way. Maybe bc going there and only eating cheesecake is a very valid and then not really that expensive (esp $/calorie)
most cheesecake factory locations are in democratic-voting areas of the country. a big success story for the power of dense urban agglomeration opening up high quality consumer niches
From the producers of "the TLS key is four"
We all had a "what?" moment when we got the details of this case. Tenant in a rooming house accidentally went to the wrong door and found his key opened his neighbor's bedroom door, tenants later found out that each tenant's key could open any bedroom's lock in the building.

Now that they don't need to even implicitly pay for it via labor costs they can have as much deadheading as they want.
Waymo really seems to have a deadheading problem. In California: "Between January 2025 and June 2026, Waymo's deadhead share [of VMT] fell from 53% to 41.9%, yet still exceeds human-driven ride-hailing by more than 50%." More deadheading --> More traffic Preprint: doi.org/10.21203/rs....
"regret" just went through the Wiktionary page to make sure there wasn't an obscure usage I was missing. I think it's just super passive aggressive diplomatic speak not a European english-ism (apparently regret means the same thing in French even).
We deeply regret the ratification today by the Libyan Parliament of the so-called Libyan-Türkiye Memorandum of Understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions in the Mediterranean Sea.
Imagining a guy on the ISO C++ committee complaining things are too technical. Why are these guys controlling our building code?
"We have to cover a variety of topics whereas our proponents get to be experts on one topic." Robert's personal story about this [again, like this is group therapy] In CA, we lobbied against and defeated 6 stories statewide. They backed down and it became a study.
Private standard committees work well enough for USB and HDMI, but for some reason it's a total joke for building codes
This thread is a pretty sobering look into how the building code sausage gets made in the US. We really need the public sector to impose some actual rigor and cost benefit analysis on this process.
Just watched this 1980s Czechoslovakia stop-motion animated movie adaptation of the Pied Piper. Amazing wood carving and taxidermied rat action. kanopy.com/video/13820111
The correct move for CEQA is to repeal it and the "public interest lawsuit" system that empowers judges to make policy decisions. Replace it with a regulatory system to achieve our policy goals. But the Prop 45 drafters are A) idiots and B) central valley sprawl developers.
As someone who thinks we need to reform CEQA, this was my read of Prop 45, also. Some parts are good, some bad, some uncertain. Esp as it is a check on terrible Trump actions, this is not the way or time to mess with it. www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/edit...
There's no world where the central valley sprawl builders would see eye to eye with Greenbelt Alliance, their goals are directly opposed. But the fact that they made it an anti-HSR measure shows what idiots they are. They could've built a broader coalition with a prop that wasn't so MAGA chud coded.
Metrolink would like to remind citizens to return home after work and stay there.
Less than half of Metrolink riders are commuters. Less than 1/3 of commuters ride all 5 days a week. So why are Metrolink member agencies slashing weekend service and hell-bent on returning to commuter schedules? calelectricrail.org/metrolink-an...
They designed for double stack freight clearance too iirc lol Consultants have their place, but early HSRA should be in textbooks for CYA consultants running amok
The early CHSRA didn’t really know what it was doing. Basically when they did it the first time, the authority told the engineers to set the knobs at 250 mph and typical “American” railroad grades (1.5-2%), and to find the best route given those criteria.
