My late and much-missed dog Monty, with his ears artfully rearranged over the top of his head to make him look vaguely leonine. I am of course posting this particular picture during this particular week entirely at random.

Two decades ago, I had to edit the work of a fair number of people who’d never written professionally before. Many were great, but some screamed blue murder if I tweaked so much as a comma—and they invariably needed a lot more than that to make their work publishable.

This post is unavailable.

They also tended to ignore the house style and word count, sometimes seriously overshooting the latter, and would then refuse to make the necessary cuts. So I’d have to do it myself, invariably without losing anything important (or what I regarded as important). Which RUINED their work, of course.

The emptiest threat imaginable is “well, I’m never writing for you again!”, as if there was any chance of them being asked. And not one of these writers amounted to anything later, whereas I’ve been only too happy to give an early professional leg-up to genuinely talented writers.

Saying Trump was "snubbed" for the Nobel Peace Prize is like saying Goonies 3 was snubbed for the Best Picture Oscar. He was never in contention because he is a war mongering fascist.

"I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

Quote an actor in the wrong film: “Not this time, Gal. Not this time. Not this fucking time. No. No no no no no no no no no! No! No no no no no no no no no no no no no! No! Not this fucking time! No fucking way! No fucking way, no fucking way, no fucking way! You've made me look a right cunt!”

And, as a bonus, I conclude with a clip of how my aborted commentary for 'Man of Marble' might have started; this was back in 2014, and I frankly chickened out—I'd never recorded a commentary before, and making my debut over a dense and intricate two-and-a-half hour epic seemed a tad over-ambitious.

“Well, if you won’t give me the Nobel Peace Prize that I totally deserved, I’ll just go and bomb another country, and *then* you’ll be sorry.” <stamps foot> “And it’s all your fault. You made me do it.”

A thing what I wroted. Usual caveat: everything in these BFI listpieces has to be currently in print in English-friendly form, preferably on a UK label, but I reckon I'd have gone for most of these even if I'd had a completely clear run at the entire corpus of Hungarian cinema.

I had to check to see if this had been published today, as opposed to half a century ago during the last Harold Wilson administration, which was the last time that Britain had anything even vaguely paying the most token lip service to the concept of full-blooded socialism. But no, it was today.

RIP Udo Kier. In late 1983 and early 1984 I saw his Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dr Jekyll on assorted big screens, in all cases absurdly too young, in films that had a worryingly disproportionate impact on my entire cultural worldview. He truly fucked life in the gall bladder and no mistake. RIP.

I never met him, sadly, but I treasure this photo of him holding the Blu-ray of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Miss Osbourne that Daniel Bird and I co-produced for Arrow back in 2015: a total labour of love that still ranks high among my proudest career achievements.

Which has reminded me that his co-star Marina Pierro insisted that we reinstate the film’s original intended title as a condition of her collaborating on the project (she played Miss Osbourne, so this was a big deal for her). But she was pushing at a door that wasn’t so much ajar as wide open.

My latest commentary commission. I was honoured to be asked, and I hope I did these incredible films something vaguely approaching justice—although I can definitely say that I’m as proud of my work here as I’ve been of pretty much anything else I’ve ever done.

I’m absolutely thrilled for my New York friends who - expectedly but still gratifyingly - cut through the same bullshit that Londoners were fed in 2016. And, ten years later, London still hasn’t become the hotbed of Islamist Communist terrorism that we were assured was inevitable under Sadiq Khan.

Here's my look at the mesmerizing masterpiece THE DEVIL'S BRIDE from @deafcrocodile.bsky.social featuring my buddy @marbleicehook.bsky.social giving another excellent commentary. This is an exceptional release for one of my favorite recent discoveries. Loved every frame of this. #filmsky #bluray

If someone gave me $30bn, I wouldn't become "energised and focused", I'd say "thank you very much", put my feet up and enjoy the rest of my now extremely pampered existence in a state of blissed-out relaxation. (Actually, I'd most likely give 99.999% of it away and live comfortably off the rest.)

After watching Michael Brooke's hour-long history of Polish animation on this set last night I now have a better idea of how to pronounce the names of directors that I've been mispronouncing for years. Also a much better idea of the history of Polish animation.
