Another milestone achieved: plagiarised by the slop merchants. My 2016 designs for the Barnes & Noble leatherbound Cthulhu vs. an abomination which is being spammed across Amazon's sites. God knows what the interior text is like. The Spanish edition I illustrated recently was all fresh translations.

Compile your own Shining soundtrack with the miracle of secondhand compact discs. These are all the recordings used in the film. The version of Penderecki's Utrenja is only available on Polish discs which I haven't gone looking for as yet.

These are all worth getting even if you dislike the film, the Karajan Bartók especially. Best recording I've heard of Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta.

#nowplaying 50% horror soundtrack on this one: the recording of the Cello Concerto is heard in part in A Warning to the Curious while Lontano is the recording used in The Shining.

The vinyl fetishists at Discogs still complaining that The Shining soundtrack album has never been given an official reissue. Almost everything on it is available in full elsewhere, it's not like it's all super-exclusive.

Much as I enjoy the concept of Halloween, I don't have to see every last thing given the kind of low-effort makeover we get at Christmas. I say this having stood in the Post Office queue watching the exchange-rate video screen looping with an orange background, grinning pumpkins and animated bats.

If you earn income from foreign countries you get used to exchange rates being a source of horror but I don't think that's quite what the Post Office had in mind.

If you'd like to read my lengthy essay "Phantoms and Thresholds of the Unreal City" (taking in Erich Zann, Leiber's urban ghosts, Atget's photos, The King in Yellow, Max Ernst's collages, the angled architecture of the 15th Arrondissement in Paris, etc) it's in here: www.lulu.com/shop/folk-ho...

Only seen this before in a poor reproduction. The illustration by Maurice Greiffenhagen that accompanied the first printing of THE MONKEY'S PAW by WW Jacobs; Harper's Monthly Magazine, September 1902.

"Ether ship" in its original meaning by Trevor James Constable apparently refers to giant etheric amoebas which are the UFOs people keep encountering. In 2000 I was commissioned to do an illo for FATE magazine showing something similar. A rather bad Photoshop collage was the result.

Two years later the same illo ended up in a spurious TV documentary about "flying rods" on the Fox channel. I wasn't impressed with the doc when I finally got to see it but they did pay me $100 for using the picture.

Previously. Nicola Gordon Bowe believed that Harry Clarke may have been quoting (or borrowing from) Las Meninas with that silhouette figure in the background.

Today in Harry Clarke you may not have seen: the first version of his illustration for The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar vs. the published version. First version, drawn in 1918, was rejected for being too horrible even though it's true to the events in the story.

Always amused by Picasso's "Yeah, whatever" approach to the dog in these variations.

Dr. Peter Paul Rubens@peterpaulrubens.bsky.social

Pablo Picasso was constantly reenvisioning Velazquez's Las Meninas. If you must be obsessed with a painting, that's a good one! Picasso, friend of the Old Masters: his day is today.

I'd say the Velázquez dog is one of the greatest in all art history but that would imply that I've seen all the dogs, which I haven't. It's a favourite anyway. Unperturbed and perfectly painted.
