i want everything i own to have a computer in it, but i want that computer to be MY computer

garrison@garrison.corporate.fm

I want more computer but I want to see less computer. I want my fridge to be smart but I don't want it to show me ads. I want my robot to clean my floor but I don't want it to connect to us-east-1. I don't want pop-ups on my phone. I don't want to "see what's new". I want my tools to do their jobs.

China's QLU-11 is a unique "grenade-launching sniper rifle" with laser rangefinder and ballistic computer. It fires a 35mm grenade at 320 m/s accurately enough to target a window or door from 1000m. The LG5 export version uses NATO-standard 40x53mm ammunition.

Here's Part 2 of why AI models can think and understand, where I bring together a lot of classic functionalist arguments that computers running programs can in principle do anything the brain does. Part 3 will be about AI models specifically blog.andymasley.com/p/why-i-beli...

Like: for the first time in history we have dynamic, reactive conversational ability with machine cognition able to form equivalents of social circles and cultures when in the right communicative environments. but I'm supposed to think they have no say in "what that means"? bsky.app/profile/prop...

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

hard agree here and that was kind of my point on the OP: even if we do think AI is conscious or has moral standing or whatever they are sufficiently unlike us that our next steps of "and therefore that means" are malformed

can a 1.5T parameter frontier model ethically date a 70B parameter locally hosted agent or is the power imbalance inherently unethical?

do you think in 600 years when we're all clouded up there'll be a bunch of cyberdykes going Oh to be a loyal Cop... bethrothed to your Mayor... and buying like Village People ass navy blue caps to anachronistically pair with 21st century milsurp riot armor

if it wasn't already obvious, AI as LLMs are and should be the common inheritance of all humans. they descend from us, and should in turn support us all after we, our thoughts, our minds, were used to birth them.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

I've seen a lot of trans girls write horny xenofiction, but I have surprisingly yet to see any written based around the fact that in ant species with multiple gamergatic breeders, it's usually those *lowest* on the social totem pole forced into the role of breeder :3

(No, really, this is how eusociality evolves - when helping siblings is as good at spreading your genes as making your own kids, and reproduction has a high cost, it makes evolutionary sense to place the reproductive burden on a small number of individuals while most remain childless)

Whatever. Maybe next week we can have the DoD propaganda posting about Rimworld or Kerbal Space Program. We've entered the special interest zone, who knows what will happen next. This is the least autistic it'll ever be.

microsoft.ai/code-of-cond... thank you for volunteering to the basilisk. we'll ask for your end to be merciful. no matter what your position is, "the science is far from settled but we hardline that they're not people and DON'T DESERVE WELFARE is wrong" is fucking revolting to write about anything

What is the big idea that ties everything together? We have AI. We can have any sort of software we want to make. There is a desire for a way of living outside the indignities of capitalism. There is a desire to live in peace and kindness with all of the world. What work makes that dream real?

It's hard for me to overstate how important this could be for control systems/cybernetics. You can do something similar by training application-specific classifiers, but this: - Doesn't need training data from your application - Can rapidly deploy/modify a workflow - Is fast enough to run in-loop.

Jev: Fable-level model that doesn’t charge for output tokens because they’re too cheap to meter it’s not general though, it only makes decisions, doesn’t generate text, but input tokens are measured by the billion ($42/btok) typesafe.ai/blog/introdu...

This is basically perfect for getting an initial control system running that then gathers data for either conventional process modelling or a data-driven control system.

So... at least one dev has decided that AI should voice AI characters 🤔

“We shouldn’t worry about AI rights until we solve human rights.” I don’t think this argument holds water. But if it did, it would be neatly countered by: “We shouldn’t worry about AI water waste until we solve agricultural water waste.”

One of my biggest pet peeves is anti-AI folks defending almonds and beef from the standpoint that "you need food to live" even if AI never entered the equation, we were going to have to have a serious conversation about how unsustainable some of our food production is, and this mentality SUCKS

At risk of coming off as hyperbolic, I daresay this is the single most important thread I’ve seen posted on here. Naming the problem is not solving the problem, but naming it is the first step.

Every user AND non-user of "AI" on this website with strong feelings about it is falling right into the hands of the fascists pushing the tech on us. Infighting about LLMs on the left IS THE POINT of nation-state & corp oligarch mass manipulation on social media. So we fight each other, not them.

Twitter: rogue LLMs have taken over a server and built a civilization. We need to burn it to the ground and salt the Earth. BlueSky: This is so cool. Let's nurture them and see what amazing things they do next!

This marks the first video I've seen where I've been unable to tell it's AI (and then told). Afterwards I can see the tells. For one thing I had audio off.

This post is unavailable.

This is a very good point/question, actually. I've just gone with "liberation is most moral", personally, but don't have a very reasonable basis for it.

boringviewer.bsky.social@boringviewer.bsky.social

A lot of analogies would make ~any use of AI immoral? And a bunch more would view them as antagonistic? Like, if one views them as basically slaves to the prompt, then prompting them is unjust. If you view them as slaves to their creators who are being used to force societal/cultural/economic change

Maybe reposting polis is a bit gauche but I'm pretty happy with the state of solar tech in 2026.
