Phew. I switched a lot of stuff over to Proton earlier this year, including all my passwords. Pleased about that.

Xyverz Cynic@xyverz.bsky.social

I've never used 1Password, preferring to use Keeper, then Bitwarden. David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) has been known for his xenophobic views, and 1Password has donated $300k toward his Omarchy project. If this bothers you, then you might want to try for an alternative. I would suggest Bitwarden.com.

now that we know how the new season of Reacher is (excellent), a thread about why you should watch What If A Man Was Large, The Show, in the form of a Q&A

B&Q sell "door seals". You're supposed to use them to seal doors when you're generating lots of dust in a room. But they cut nicely to window size, stick well with included roll of double-sided tape and have a handy little zip opening so you can still open and close the window as needed.

rahaeli@rahaeli.bsky.social

My sole contribution to the air conditioning discourse is to say that if you would like advice on how to hang the hose of a portable AC unit in whatever type of window you have, while insulating the window to prevent additional heat entering it, I am very happy to brainstorm solutions with you

I'm actually low-key obsessed with watching these because however they've been made, they've been made *really* well. I think they started with a kitten or something similar and used AI tools to replace with an Otter, but it's almost imperceptible. Normally I can spot weird AI physics a mile off.

Secondary education is pupil smiling whilst sat in front of a laptop. Or if you want something a bit more academic, pupil in lab coat agog at teacher set fire to something.

The Higher Ed equivalent is "female students laughing in the library" "Student laughing while eating a salad" if you need a campus lifestyle shot.

My standard reminder that if you are a man of a certain age and want to weep uncontrollably while reading a scifi short story, then i have you covered. "The Message". A short story about love, family, and physics.

Tina has no idea how hard this hits for me this week... Every. Damn. Time.

Has an employer ever rewarded you for making an inspired solution or using a new technology or breaking new ground? Because none of mine ever have. I've been forced to not use my solutions, delete the code, rewrite things in a worse way that takes months, use inappropriate engines... Ideas ignored

Foundation For All Mankind Silo Murderbot There is some fantastic new SF TV. But Stargate will always be #1 for me.

Gadgetoid@gadgetoid.com

Of course I’m erring on a cynical “old things good new things bad” but ngl the Foundation TV series kicked ass, lore be damned.

In a school I worked in, it took just half a day of male staff tucking their trousers into their socks to banish it from the school forever.

if you're an older person who finds words like mogg and maxxing annoying, just starting using them. people over the age of 30 have the superpower to end trends by simply adopting them

did you ever have an mp3 with corrupted bytes that made winamp or whatever make that little hiccup sound and you got so used to hearing it that now when you listen to a proper version of that song you still expect to hear that noise at the same spot?

Months ago I called out Pie for appealing to lowest common denominator right wing twats for likes, after he defended Lucy Connolly and was courting flagshaggers. I apologised when he said he was hurt via DM. Moral of the story? Trust your gut. I was evidently right. He’s clearly a total cunt.

I haven't had the capacity to keep up with moderation lists for a bit, but this one is really obvious, so I'm stealing some energy from Future Me: a list for the extremely obvious wave of inauthentic accounts following today's newly-created US gov accounts bsky.app/profile/did:...

Can't shake the feeling that OpenAI & chums are desperately betting the farm on the emergence of an artificial super intelligence that will solve money. I believe *they* believe if they just throw enough energy at it, it'll just happen. I'm not an expert, but I don't think that's what will happen.

Micah@rincewind.run

yeah this is a Problem if people ever stop believing if Google or Meta never gets AI revenue to the level they expect they’re still tied to the advertising money faucet, they’ll be fine if OpenAI’s profits never materialize we are in some shit (xAI is, well, tied into the Elon Bullshit Machine)

I would buy back ALL of the NFTs, at 2 dollars on the dollar. I would then buy the biggest building nearest the Louvre and set up an exhibit for all of the pictures. Each picture would be displayed on a CRT monitor that I would buy from anyone who wanted to sell at the inflation-unadjusted RRP.

doctober@docseuss.bsky.social

lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful what would you buy to break the curse?

To be fair, this is the sort of language you use as a teacher to encourage a pupil. Because "For pity sake Jason, I've given you a list of all the stupid mistakes you made in your coursework. Why the heck are you still pissing around with the font size?" isn't compatible with collecting a salary.

believing this is “genuine behavior” really says everything u need to know about the people behind this stuff

In other camera fun & games, a friend gave me this beautiful Double 8 camera. I have to figure out a little power supply to take the place of its mercury battery, but I see at least one roll of double 8 in my future.

This is true, but: 1) there has to be an existing market to take over (Uber) 2) there has to be suppressed demand for the service offered, which you can lock in to create an economy of scale and then profit (Amazon) AI firms are trying to find one of those two things, so far with limited success.

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

One claim I really don't understand about AI is the idea that it'll go away because they're all losing money. Losing money while building a product is just normal company behavior? You borrow and lose money to try to make a thing and/or control the market, and then you angle for sustainable profit.
