iPhone Duo Reviewers Really Miss Face ID

macrumors.comiPhone Duo Reviewers Really Miss Face IDTouch ID on the iPhone Duo might end up being frustrating for some users, based on media reviews that came out today. Multiple reviewers found ‌Touch ID‌ to be slow to unlock, which can be jarring coming from Face ID. According to Marques Brownlee, Apple added an intentional delay to "every single" ‌Touch ID‌ unlock. After you touch a finger to the side button to unlock, it pauses on the Lock Screen. If you keep your finger there, it continues to the Home Screen. It's technically smart. Like, it's giving people a chance to check to see their notifications real quick before it goes and unlocks it. And if they want to deliberately hold it longer, it'll unlock. But as someone who is used to the instant unlocks from Face ID, I was like, I need to find a way to turn this off. And I did not find that. Like it just makes the fingerprint reader feel slow when it's not slow [...] I really think Face ID is going to be the number one thing people miss coming from other iPhones. Brownlee says his workaround is to wake the ‌iPhone Duo‌, swipe up, then touch the sensor for an instant unlock. Engadget described ‌Touch ID‌ as taking "a bit longer to unlock than you might expect." Apple told the site that the ‌Touch ID‌ pause creates a more consistent experience when compared to other devices that use ‌Touch ID‌, like Macs and iPads, and gives the phone time to wake up and display Lock Screen notifications. In her review, Joanna Stern said she was fumbling unlocks even a week in, with five fingers registered. "‌Face ID‌, I cannot tell you how deeply I miss you," she said. Mrwhosetheboss said the hold instead of the tap "feels like a tiny bit of extra friction 50 times a day." He found ‌Touch ID‌ could be problematic just after washing his hands or with slightly greasy fingers, plus he said it's really only comfortable to use in landscape orientation. PetaPixel said Apple's choice to use ‌Touch ID‌ instead of ‌Face ID‌ "was a mistake," and found it to be slower than ‌Face ID‌. Accidental presses when picking up or moving the iPhone also trigger a haptic error buzz. PetaPixel said it was buzzing constantly. Apple allows the ‌iPhone Duo‌ to be unlocked with the Apple Watch as an alternative to ‌Touch ID‌, and PetaPixel said this method of unlocking was faster than using ‌Touch ID‌. Having a watch for unlocking "removed a lot of the friction" caused by ‌Touch ID‌. Brian Tong said ‌Touch ID‌ feels like a step back. "I'm going to tell you right now, you will want to wear an Apple Watch," he said. Gizmodo's Raymond Wong said he missed ‌Face ID‌ every time he grabbed the ‌iPhone Duo‌ off a desk or out of a pocket and he remembered he had to put a registered finger on the button for unlocking. He said it was difficult to get used to not being able to look to authenticate a payment with Apple Pay. Wong also points out that as with old iPhones, winter gloves will need to come off for unlocking. The Verge said "a week" was long enough to get used to ‌Touch ID‌, and that it's "mostly painless once you remember you're supposed to be using it." 9to5Mac said the ‌iPhone Duo‌'s biggest tradeoff might be ‌Touch ID‌, but also described it as working "quickly and reliably." If you're getting an ‌iPhone Duo‌, will you miss ‌Face ID‌? One more thing. I double-checked the thermal paste for even contact and then did a 526 MHz overclock - which resulted in 1080p being playable! CPU Utilization is near 100%, it'll buffer every minute or so, oscillate between 20-30fps, and sometimes drops frames. But watchable.

If you run any kind of PHP application on your server... it's time to patch. Except... the patch is not here yet. Some info here: jackalsyn.com/posts/php-up... - but disabling upload progress *may* help, it's just not the full fix: session.upload_progress.enabled = Off

jackalsyn.comOnly for the curious...
nightshade →home, for now@nightshade.technology

details leaked. this vulnerability is a full unauthenticated unconditional remote code execution exploit against any service running on a PHP version from 5.4 until latest yeah if anything deserves CVSS 11, this is it. this is CATACLYSMICALLY bad.

I also have to admit.. In taking apart my G5s the last 2 days I learned to my horror I’ve been using entirely too damn much thermal paste per individual application all these years. I used to put a big blob in the middle and let the pressure spread.. Now I don’t do that anymore. (1/4)

Pictures are of the iMac G5 paste job, and the results afterward. It runs “cool enough” and can be pushed 😁! It’ll cold boot to 37c, settle at 57.4c idle. (3/4)

when its pushed it’ll hit 65-69c but stay in that range, and when the intense app is closed, the temps drop back to idle range. It is a more enclosed space vs the Power Mac so it’ll run warmer. (4/4)

I do a very thin even spread with the smallest amount, only enough to make contact between the two surfaces so it can transfer the heat. In doing so, it’s how the Dual 2.0 gained another notch of performance for Chrome 117, and now the iMac G5 runs properly cool. Lesson learned. 😅 (2/4)

The recapped PSU i installed in my Swap Meet iMac G5 is from National RAM Electronics in Alpine, NY. Though the warranty expired 14 years ago, this power supply never failed on me since.

There will be an article about it soon enough! My Dual 2.0 G5 is managing 720p on YouTube at near-native playing speed after the UI is finished loading, with some stutters.

(Posted from same Mac) Can't believe my eyes, but Chrome for PowerPC is real! Still in beta with graphical glitches and only for G5s for now, it already feels more responsive versus PowerFox. 😮

Today’s haul from Swap Meet! Getting tighter on space so I didn’t bring back as much. I’m happy with the iMac G5, finally found the matching HP keyboard I was looking for, got rid of some parts and a couple Macs I wasn’t using, and had a nice lil’ road trip. Enjoyed chatting with some people too!

If you recognize the Apple II peripheral in this photo...you're one of the few!🕹️ And if you actually HAVE one, or know someone who does... Please contact me!! 💾 It's a 1980 VersaWriter, the graphic tablet I used to create the rotoscoped Karateka animations. 🙏 Sadly, I got rid of mine long ago.

I’ve had quite a few Power Mac G4s over the years, but never an MDD. Thank you Dan Bashur for this! This is a Dual 1.25 02, & sits next to a rival HP a320n of that time. The best part? This thing has a R9000 64 MB and is the last to ship with OS 9. This is the fastest native OS 9 GPU & Mac combo.

There’s still more haul from VCF Midwest.. This is a rather minty Mid-07 15” MBP only a few hairs away from being fully boxed. It had no HDD or RAM, is missing a couple screws, no original docs, but has it’s original wrapping covers. This has to be the best condition pre-unibody MBP I’ve ever seen!

And the final one before the storm: Macintosh IIx. This one is running again, CPU had no clock signal. Chased that back to a bad 74ALS374, and one open trace for the power circuit. RAM issues also ensued, so new 74F258s and now its finally alive!

Someone made a kernel driver built from NVIDIA's own open-source GPU kernel modules for the RTX 5060, ported it to macOS, and now it’s open-sourced for everyone to download! It’s buggy but they say full acceleration under Sequoia. 🤯 github.com/nullmoth

That feeling when you open up a cabinet you have not touched in a few years and find a Motorola 68060! And then notice it is the "EC" model with no FPU or MMU.... 😭😭😭

Invites for the October 13th event were sent out a few hours ago. Looks like we may be getting new smart home tech, including possibly an iMac G4-inspired HomePad!
