M5 vs. M6 MacBook Pro Buyer's Guide: All Differences Compared

macrumors.comM5 vs. M6 MacBook Pro Buyer's Guide: All Differences ComparedApple today replaced the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with a new M6 model, bringing more CPU and GPU cores, upgraded wireless connectivity, and more. How much has changed, and is it worth upgrading or choosing the newer model? The M6 ‌MacBook Pro‌ retains the previous model's design and most of its specifications, concentrating its improvements on processing performance and connectivity. Both models offer 16GB of starting memory, 1TB of starting storage, and up to 24 hours of battery life. The M5 ‌MacBook Pro‌ originally launched at $1,599 with 512GB of storage. Apple removed that configuration in March, making 1TB standard and increasing the starting price to $1,699. A further price increase in June brought it to $1,999 amid rising memory and storage costs. The M6 replaces that model at the same price. Here are all of the differences between the entry-level M5 and M6 ‌MacBook Pro‌ models: 14-Inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (M5, 2025) 14-Inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (M6, 2026) M5 chip made with TSMC's third-generation 3nm process (N3P) M6 chip made with TSMC's first-generation 2nm process (N2) FinFET transistors Gate-all-around nanosheet transistors 10-core CPU 12-core CPU 4 super cores and 6 efficiency cores 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores 10-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core Enhanced shader cores Updated shader core architecture Second-generation Dynamic Caching Third-generation Dynamic Caching 16-core Neural Engine Dual 16-core Neural Engine, totaling 32 cores 153GB/s memory bandwidth across all memory configurations 16GB memory: 153GB/s 24GB or 32GB memory: 170GB/s Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) Bluetooth 5.3 Bluetooth 6 Broadcom wireless networking chip Apple N1 wireless networking chip Thread networking support Supports two external 4K displays at up to 144Hz each Supports two external 4K displays at up to 165Hz each Originally offered with 512GB storage; started with 1TB from March 2026 Starts with 1TB storage Originally $1,599; $1,699 from March and $1,999 from June; now discontinued by Apple Starts at $1,999 Should You Upgrade From the M5 MacBook Pro? For existing M5 ‌MacBook Pro‌ owners, there is very little reason to upgrade. The M6 is a small refresh aimed primarily at buyers replacing a much older machine, with improvements to performance and connectivity that leave the overall experience essentially unchanged. It offers no increase in memory capacity, additional ports, or longer battery life. If the M5 model already handles your work comfortably, the newer model provides little practical incentive to replace it. If your current computer can last a little longer, it may also be worth waiting. A redesigned entry-level ‌MacBook Pro‌ with an M7 chip is reportedly planned for as early as the first half of 2027, potentially offering a more substantial upgrade than the M6 refresh. Should You Buy the M5 or M6 MacBook Pro? For buyers replacing an Intel-based Mac or an older Apple silicon machine, the M5 and M6 deliver much the same experience. The more consequential improvements come from the hardware they share, so the price and configuration should carry more weight than the chip generation. * M5 vs. M6 Chip Buyer's Guide: How Much Better Really Is M6? At the same price, memory, storage, and condition, choose the M6. Its newer chip and wireless connectivity are welcome additions, but there is little reason to pay substantially more for them. A discounted M5 model is likely to be the better value for many buyers. Used and refurbished M5 models offer another potential saving: the 512GB configuration that Apple discontinued in March. If you do not need 1TB of internal storage, this version may provide a more affordable route to essentially the same ‌MacBook Pro‌ experience. The M6 starts at 1TB, leaving no equivalent lower-capacity option. A well-priced M5 with enough memory and storage for your work is still a sensible purchase, while the M6 is the straightforward choice when comparable models cost close to the same amount.Related Roundup: MacBook ProBuyer's Guide: MacBook Pro (Coming Soon)Related Forum: MacBook Pro This article, "M5 vs. M6 MacBook Pro Buyer's Guide: All Differences Compared" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

M4 vs. M6 iMac Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade?

macrumors.comM4 vs. M6 iMac Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade?Apple's latest iMac skips the M5 chip and moves directly to the M6, bringing faster performance, improved connectivity, and faster storage. So how much has changed since the M4 model arrived in 2024, and is it worth upgrading? The M6 iMac starts at $1,499 in the United States, with the four-port configuration starting at $1,699. While the entry price is $200 higher than the M4 model's original $1,299 launch price, the outgoing model had already risen to $1,499 earlier in 2026. With much of the ‌iMac‌ experience unchanged, existing M4 owners may be weighing up whether the performance improvements justify replacing their machine, while new buyers may be considering a discounted older model. Here are the key differences between the M4 and M6 ‌iMac‌: ‌iMac‌ (M4, 2024) ‌iMac‌ (M6, 2026) M4 chip made using TSMC's second-generation 3nm process (N3E) M6 chip made using TSMC's first-generation 2nm process (N2) FinFET transistors Gate-all-around nanosheet transistors Two-port model: 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores Four-port model: 10-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores Two-port model: 10-core CPU with 2 super cores, 3 performance cores, and 5 efficiency cores Four-port model: 12-core CPU with 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores Two CPU core types: performance and efficiency Three CPU core types: super, performance, and efficiency Two-port model: 8-core GPU Four-port model: 10-core GPU Two-port model: 10-core GPU Four-port model: 12-core GPU Integrated Neural Accelerator in every GPU core GPU shader cores without dedicated Neural Accelerators GPU shader cores with a dedicated Neural Accelerator in every core First-generation Dynamic Caching Updated Dynamic Caching Second-generation hardware-accelerated ray tracing Hardware-accelerated ray tracing with up to 2x higher gaming performance compared with M4, according to Apple One 16-core Neural Engine Two 16-core Neural Engines, totaling 32 cores, which system frameworks can use simultaneously 120GB/s unified memory bandwidth Up to 170GB/s unified memory bandwidth SSD storage SSD storage with PCIe 5.0 support and up to 2x faster read and write performance Broadcom wireless networking chip Apple N1 wireless networking chip Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) Bluetooth 5.3 Bluetooth 6 Thread networking technology Two-port model: Optional Gigabit Ethernet Four-port model: Gigabit Ethernet as standard Two-port model: Optional 2.5Gb Ethernet Four-port model: 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard Two-port model: One external display up to 6K at 60Hz Two-port model: One external display up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 165Hz Four-port model: Two external displays up to 6K at 60Hz, or one external display up to 8K at 60Hz Four-port model: Two external displays up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 165Hz, or one external display up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz, or 4K at 240Hz Four-port model: Support for two external displays over a single Thunderbolt port 100% recycled gold plating and tin solder in multiple printed circuit boards 100% recycled gold plating and tin solder in all Apple-designed printed circuit boards Over 20% of manufacturing electricity sourced from low-carbon electricity 40% of manufacturing electricity sourced from renewable electricity Apple claims the following workflow improvements for the M6 ‌iMac‌ compared with the M4 model: * Up to 1.5x faster performance in Microsoft Excel. * Up to 2x faster graphics performance for photo editing in Affinity. * Up to 5x faster prompt processing in LM Studio. * Up to 2x higher gaming performance with ray tracing. Is It Worth Upgrading From the M4 to M6 iMac? For most M4 ‌iMac‌ owners, there is little reason to upgrade. The M6's performance improvements are substantial in certain tasks, but casual tasks such as browsing, email, video calls, and streaming are already comfortably within the M4's capabilities. With the same display, camera, speakers, and overall design, the new model is unlikely to meaningfully change how most households use their ‌iMac‌. Occasional photo editing or gaming can benefit from the M6, but these improvements alone are difficult to justify replacing an otherwise capable computer. The faster networking similarly offers limited incentive unless your current connection is a particular frustration and the rest of your equipment can support the upgrade. For the typical M4 ‌iMac‌ owner, keeping the existing machine is the sensible choice. Should You Buy the M4 or M6 iMac? For buyers choosing a new family computer, the M6 ‌iMac‌ is the straightforward choice when comparable configurations are close in price. Its additional performance provides more room for demanding apps and games as your needs change, while retaining the familiar all-in-one experience. However, a substantially discounted M4 ‌iMac‌ remains an appealing purchase. Most households will get much the same everyday experience, making the saving more useful than the M6's additional processing power.Related Roundup: iMacBuyer's Guide: iMac (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iMac This article, "M4 vs. M6 iMac Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade?" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Apple Fixes Possibly Exploited CoreGraphics Flaw on Older iPhones

macrumors.comApple Fixes Possibly Exploited CoreGraphics Flaw on Older iPhonesAmong the flurry of iOS 27.2 releases on Monday, Apple also pushed a wave of software updates for its older operating systems, including a fix for a CoreGraphics vulnerability that Apple says may have been exploited in targeted attacks. The releases include iOS 26.7.2, iPadOS 26.7.2, iOS 18.7.11, iPadOS 18.7.11, macOS Tahoe 26.7.2, macOS Sequoia 15.8.2, and tvOS 26.6.1. iOS 18.7.11 and iPadOS 18.7.11 bring the CoreGraphics fix to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and seventh-generation iPad, all of which cannot run iOS 26. According to Apple, processing a maliciously crafted file on these devices could lead to arbitrary code execution, and the company is "aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 27." For iOS 26.7.2 and iPadOS 26.7.2, Apple lists security fixes covering 134 vulnerabilities, none of which are flagged as having been exploited in the wild. Apple likewise lists security fixes for macOS Tahoe 26.7.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.8.2. Lastly, tvOS 26.6.1: the only release of these updates with a user-facing change. The update adds support for the fourth-generation Siri Remote on the Apple TV HD and first-generation Apple TV 4K. All of the updates are available now. On iPhone and iPad, go to Settings ➝ General ➝ Software Update. On Mac, go to System Settings ➝ General ➝ Software Update. iPhone 18e Could Get Two Key Upgrades While Keeping 60Hz Display

macrumors.comiPhone 18e Could Get Two Key Upgrades While Keeping 60Hz DisplayApple's upcoming iPhone 18e model will retain a 60Hz display but could gain an upgraded front-facing camera, according to the leaker known as "Digital Chat Station." In a new post on Weibo, the leaker said that the device will feature a 6.12-inch OLED display using low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology, the A20 chip, and a single 48-megapixel rear camera. They were less definitive about the front-facing camera, saying it could be upgraded to 24 megapixels. The specifications suggest that the iPhone 18e will offer no major display or rear camera hardware upgrades over the previous two generations. Both the iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e feature approximately 6.1-inch ‌OLED‌ displays with a 60Hz refresh rate and a single 48-megapixel rear camera. The post does not detail the rear camera's sensor or lens, so smaller hardware changes remain possible. The A20 chip would represent a more significant upgrade. Like the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro, the A20 is expected to use a 2nm manufacturing process, bringing notable performance and power efficiency improvements over the iPhone 17e's 3nm A19 chip. It would also bring the device into line with the upcoming standard iPhone 18, which is expected to use the same chip. The front-facing camera claim is less clear. Digital Chat Station specified 24 megapixels, although it is unclear whether this refers to a new camera or is a mistaken reference to the 18-megapixel Center Stage camera introduced with the iPhone 17 lineup. A 24-megapixel camera was widely rumored before those devices launched. Either resolution would represent an upgrade over the 12-megapixel front camera used by the iPhone 16e and ‌iPhone 17e‌. Digital Chat Station previously claimed that the iPhone 18e would retain a 60Hz LTPS display. An earlier report from Korea suggested that an LTPO display capable of supporting 120Hz ProMotion could reach the entry-level iPhone with the "iPhone 19e" in 2028. The iPhone 18e is expected to launch in spring 2027, alongside the standard ‌iPhone 18‌ and iPhone Air 2.Related Roundup: iPhone 17eTag: Digital Chat StationBuyer's Guide: iPhone 17e (Neutral) This article, "iPhone 18e Could Get Two Key Upgrades While Keeping 60Hz Display" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

iOS 27.2 Features: Everything New in iOS 27.2

macrumors.comiOS 27.2 Features: Everything New in iOS 27.2Apple released iOS 27.2, uniting the iPhone Duo and other iPhone models on the same version of iOS. iOS 27.2 is the first major iOS 27 update, and it adds several useful new features. Siri AI Improvements Siri AI can recall past conversations you had with it, so you can ask ‌Siri‌ about something it told you before, like a restaurant it previously recommended. It's also able to draw on more sources: * Photos attached to Messages * Calendar event attendees * Voicemails Apple says you'll also get better results from Safari history and Reading List. There's a redesigned Excluded Apps feature that lets you quickly select which apps ‌Siri‌, Search, and suggestions can access. The prior App Access feature required excluding apps individually. There's also granular text selection, so you can select and copy just the part of a ‌Siri‌ response you need. ‌Siri‌ AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Siri AI Languages ‌Siri‌ AI is now available in more languages, including French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. ‌Siri‌ AI is still not available in the EU or mainland China. Messages Suggestions in Messages have been added in iOS 27.2. The feature was available during the ‌iOS 27‌ beta testing period, but was removed before launch. Messages suggestions show tappable shortcuts in a conversation based on context, so you can do things like track a package with a tap, or add a dinner invite to the Calendar app. You can choose the suggestions you want, with options to add Calendar, Reminders, Notes, Maps, and Flights and Packages. Apple Music iOS 27.2 introduces a new Apple Music icon that goes with Apple's recent ‌Apple Music‌ rebranding. The icon is black and white, replacing the red icon. Apple also changed the color of the highlights in the navigation bar and other areas of the ‌Apple Music‌ app to remove the red color. Photos Shared Albums in the ‌Photos‌ app now have an edit option for captions and comments. Apple also added a feature for avoiding duplicate photos, and there's now a reminder before albums expire so users can save important photos and videos. SynthID iOS 27.2 includes SynthID labeling for Image Playground images and some ‌Photos‌ app edits. Watermarks are added when using Extend and Reframe in ‌Photos‌, and for large edits with the Clean Up tool. You can check images for SynthID using Google's SynthID Detector website. Podcasts The Home tab in the Podcasts app has separate sections for New Episodes and Continue Playing. The new sections replace Up Next. Games The Friends tab in the Games app now includes context on friend suggestions and shows recent games played on friends' player pages. Apple TV Apple TV app users can now create profiles in the account settings section on the iPhone and iPad. Profiles only require a name, profile rating, and information about whether the user is a child. Creating a profile for a child limits content to a PG rating by default, but there is a customize option for finer control. Users can select age ratings for TV shows and movies that are appropriate for the child based on their age. Phone The Call Context feature in the Phone app reminds you of a contact's anniversary when you call them, as long as you've saved the date in the Contacts app. FaceTime FaceTime Dual Capture is now available in group ‌FaceTime‌ calls. Dual Capture is a feature that lets you stream ‌FaceTime‌ video content from the front and rear cameras at the same time. On a compatible device running ‌iOS 27‌, flipping the camera while on a ‌FaceTime‌ call automatically turns on Dual Capture. Dual Capture is available on the iPhone 17, ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro, ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max, and ‌iPhone Duo‌. Apple also added an option to add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call. Shortcuts ‌iOS 27‌ includes new automations, actions, and improvements for the Shortcuts app. There's a new "when my iPhone is opened or closed" automation for the ‌iPhone Duo‌. An updated Workout automation adds support for the Fitness app, and the App automation can provide the name of the app that was closed. Window layout can be configured with the "Show Actions" and Show Describe a Shortcut" menu items, and Shortcut names and icons can be edited from the library. iPhone Duo Updates iOS 27.2 adds Apple Pencil USB-C support to the ‌iPhone Duo‌. It also includes Edge Light to illuminate your face during video calls. Multiview iOS 27.2 expands Multiview in the ‌Apple TV‌ app to the iPhone, so users can watch up to four live sports streams simultaneously. Multiview works for sports events included in an ‌Apple TV‌ subscription: Major League Soccer (MLS), Formula 1 (F1) in the U.S., and Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders during the Major League Baseball season. Clock App There are smaller a.m. and p.m. labels in the alarm list in the Clock app. EU - App Tracking Transparency App Tracking Transparency supports an alternative expanded prompt for EU users along with re-prompting on an annual basis. The alternative prompt is required for users in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania. Health App Apple tested its redesigned Health app in the iOS 27.2 beta, but it won't be coming out until later this year and is not included in iOS 27.2. Security Fixes iOS 27.2 addresses more than 160 security vulnerabilities. None of the vulnerabilities were actively exploited, but it's always a good idea to update when this many fixes are included.Related Roundups: iOS 27, iPadOS 27Related Forum: iOS 27 This article, "iOS 27.2 Features: Everything New in iOS 27.2" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Why Can't iPhone Duo Users Make Eye Contact on FaceTime?

macrumors.comWhy Can't iPhone Duo Users Make Eye Contact on FaceTime?FaceTime's Eye Contact setting is missing on the iPhone Duo, MacRumors can confirm. The setting was first flagged as absent by MacRumors forum member TwoBytes, who noticed their eyes looking "a little off" during a call. Eye Contact setting on iPhone 18 Pro (left) vs iPhone Duo Introduced in iOS 14, Eye Contact uses machine learning to subtly adjust your eyes during a video call to make it seem like you're looking into the camera lens, even though you're actually looking at the image of the other person on your screen. While it may seem the obvious cause, the iPhone Duo's lack of Face ID and TrueDepth camera is unlikely to be the reason for Eye Contact's absence, since iPhone SE models with Touch ID also include the option in Settings. One possibility is the position of the inner display's under-display camera, which sits toward the right-hand side of the screen, away from the center where the other caller's face usually appears. Correcting for that larger, sideways offset is going to be different than for the small vertical gap on a regular iPhone. The Duo's design also means the camera's position relative to your gaze changes depending on which display you're using and what the device's folded state is. Apple already restricts Eye Tracking – a gaze-based accessibility feature – to when the Duo is fully open. We've reached out to Apple for a technical explanation about the lack of Eye Contact on the iPhone Duo.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoTag: FaceTimeBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhone This article, "Why Can't iPhone Duo Users Make Eye Contact on FaceTime?" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Here's Why Apple's Next Pre-Orders Begin on Wednesday at 10:10 AM

macrumors.comHere's Why Apple's Next Pre-Orders Begin on Wednesday at 10:10 AMApple said the new iPad mini that it announced today will be available to pre-order starting at a quite specific time on Wednesday: 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple invited selected tech reporters and content creators to an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes Apple will kick off the experience by playing a short video unveiling the rumored MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, and then start taking pre-orders immediately afterward. In other words, the video should be around 10 minutes long, and this would explain why pre-orders for the new iPad mini and likely the MacBook Pro with a touchscreen are set to begin at exactly 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time. It is likely that pre-orders for new iMac and 14-inch MacBook Pro models with the M6 chip will begin at that time too. One final "inside baseball" thought: If this plan proves to be accurate, a press release for the MacBook Pro with a touchscreen might not appear on the Apple Newsroom website until closer to 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, whereas the new iPad mini's press release came out at a much earlier 6 a.m. Pacific Time today.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPad This article, "Here's Why Apple's Next Pre-Orders Begin on Wednesday at 10:10 AM" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Apple Releases HomePod 27.2 Software With Sound Glow for Existing HomePods

macrumors.comApple Releases HomePod 27.2 Software With Sound Glow for Existing HomePodsApple today released new HomePod 27.2 software for the ‌HomePod‌ and ‌HomePod‌ mini. ‌HomePod‌ Software 27.2 brings a new Sound Glow option to the ‌HomePod‌, ‌HomePod‌ mini, and upcoming HomePod mini 2. Sound Glow causes the top of a ‌HomePod‌ or ‌HomePod‌ mini to light up with color that pulses in sync with the music that's playing. iPad Mini 2024 vs. 2026 Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade?

macrumors.comiPad Mini 2024 vs. 2026 Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade?Apple today announced the eighth-generation iPad mini, introducing a larger OLED display, a thinner and lighter design, the A20 Pro chip, and water and dust resistance, but how much does it differ from the previous model? The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model and $849 with cellular connectivity. With the prior generation now discontinued, buyers also face a choice between paying for the new features and finding a cheaper A17 Pro model. Both offer the same storage capacities, advertised battery life, Touch ID authentication, and USB-C transfer speeds, so the new model does not improve every aspect of the experience. Should You Upgrade? Most A17 Pro ‌iPad mini‌ owners can comfortably keep their current device. The new model offers the same advertised battery life, storage capacities, Apple Pencil support, and USB-C transfer speeds. If your ‌iPad mini‌ still meets your needs, there is little reason to upgrade for everyday performance alone. The slightly larger display now with ‌OLED‌ technology may be the strongest reason to consider replacing it, particularly if you frequently use your ‌iPad mini‌ for watching videos or reading. The thinner and lighter design may also make a worthwhile difference if you spend long periods holding it. For users who regularly encounter distracting reflections or enjoy reading on their device, nano-texture glass could provide a more specific reason to upgrade. It does raise the cost considerably, since it requires at least 256GB of storage as well as the additional $100 display option. The landscape camera, water resistance, and fast charging are useful additions, but are highly unlikely to justify replacing a A17 Pro model on their own. An upgrade makes more sense when several of these changes address things you find limiting about your current device. Which Model Should You Buy? For most new buyers, the A20 Pro model should be the starting point. The ‌OLED‌ display and new design are its main advantages, and both largely matter more to the everyday experience than the chip. The A17 Pro model may still be worth considering when it offers substantial savings. It retains many of the same capabilities and remains a sensible choice for reading, browsing, taking notes, and watching videos, even if it uses the design of an older device. For the A20 Pro model, it is important to remember that the 256GB version makes nano-texture glass available, while the 512GB version adds a CPU core and a second Neural Engine. Apple Responds to iPhone Duo Display Cracking Reports

macrumors.comApple Responds to iPhone Duo Display Cracking ReportsShortly after the iPhone Duo launched, a few users reported hinge issues that were causing cracks in the inner display. Apple has now responded to the reports in a statement to MacRumors, saying a small number of units are affected. The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple did not say what causes the cracking, or if a fix is planned. Affected users have been able to get in-store replacements, though with limited stock available, some are having to wait. Many of the iPhone Duos experiencing issues cracked in the same place on the lower half of the inner display. The crack is along the hinge, and users say there is a stuck feeling and sometimes a popping noise just before the damage appears. iFixit took apart the ‌iPhone Duo‌ and found several possible causes for the hinge failure. The site said multiple components converge in that location, and it's possible a center support bar in the hinge that's supposed to retract isn't doing so, leading to damage.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhone This article, "Apple Responds to iPhone Duo Display Cracking Reports" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

iPhone Duo: Watch Video Above an App in Portrait Mode

macrumors.comiPhone Duo: Watch Video Above an App in Portrait ModeThe iPhone Duo's two-app multitasking feature works side by side in landscape, but rotating the inner display to portrait usually drops you back to a single app. However, there is a workaround to keep a video playing above an open app in portrait, and it involves Picture in Picture. Both the inner and outer displays on the iPhone Duo share the same 1:1.4 aspect ratio, and each half of the inner display works out to roughly the same size and shape as the outer screen. That even split gives each app a canvas it already has to support, with the divider sitting neatly on the fold. The only apparent exception to this is when watching a TV show or movie above another app in portrait mode – but there's a trick to getting it working. With your iPhone Duo unfolded in portrait orientation, follow these steps: * Start playing a video in an app that supports Picture in Picture, such as Apple TV or Apple Podcasts. * Tap the Picture in Picture icon to shrink the video into a floating window. * Swipe up to return to the Home Screen, then open the app you want to use (note: it can't be another video app). * Tap the icon that appears in the PiP window to stack the video above the open app. It's a bit of a fiddle, but it works for most apps that support PiP. Whether Apple makes it a little easier to do in a future update remains to be seen.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhone This article, "iPhone Duo: Watch Video Above an App in Portrait Mode" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

AirPods Pro Hearing Aid Feature Launching in These Canadian Provinces

macrumors.comAirPods Pro Hearing Aid Feature Launching in These Canadian ProvincesThe incoming iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 updates enable Apple's Hearing Aid and Hearing Test features on the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 in five Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan. The features are still not available in any other provinces, but Ontario is reportedly about to change a law that will pave the way for the features to launch there. "The Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features are supported in select provinces in Canada on AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware when paired with a compatible iPhone or iPad with iOS 27.2 or iPadOS 27.2 and later," says Apple. iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 are currently in beta and could be released as soon as today. With the clinical-grade Hearing Aid feature, AirPods Pro 2 and later can amplify the sound around you. Apple says the feature, available at no additional cost, is intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Meanwhile, the five-minute Hearing Test allows adults to identify if they have hearing loss by measuring their ability to hear different frequencies of sound. Afterwards, the results will show a hearing loss classification and recommended next steps. The two features first launched in the U.S. and select other countries in October 2024. A third Hearing Protection feature on AirPods Pro 2 and later was already available in Canada.Related Roundups: AirPods Pro 3, iOS 27, iPadOS 27Buyer's Guide: AirPods Pro (Neutral)Related Forums: AirPods, iOS 27 This article, "AirPods Pro Hearing Aid Feature Launching in These Canadian Provinces" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

New iPad Mini Gains Adaptive True Tone Flash

macrumors.comNew iPad Mini Gains Adaptive True Tone FlashApple's new iPad mini features an Adaptive True Tone flash, bringing an iPad Pro feature to Apple's smallest tablet for the first time. Unlike the iPad Air, the previous-generation iPad mini already featured a True Tone flash. Apple says the new Adaptive True Tone flash on the ‌iPad mini‌ improves photography and document scanning. It sits alongside a 12-megapixel Wide rear camera with Smart HDR 4 and support for recording 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. The Adaptive True Tone flash debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022. It features an array of nine LEDs that adjust its lighting pattern and intensity according to the selected focal length, allowing illumination to better match the camera's field of view. The technology subsequently came to the M4 iPad Pro in 2024, where Apple highlighted its ability to improve document scans. When the camera detects a document obscured by a shadow, the ‌iPad Pro‌ captures multiple images using the Adaptive Flash and combines them into a clearer scan. The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699. Quickly Silence iPhone Duo Without a Ring/Mute Switch

macrumors.comQuickly Silence iPhone Duo Without a Ring/Mute SwitchThe new iPhone Duo drops both the classic Ring/Silent switch as well as the newer Action button, so there is no physical mute control on the device, and no way to assign the Silent Mode control to another button. That said, you can still silence the device pretty quickly – you just do it on-screen instead using a new way to invoke Control Center. With your device unlocked, open Control Center by tapping the circular "status bar" icon, then tap the Silent Mode button (the bell icon). That's all there is to it. A Silent mode indicator appears in the status bar while it's on, but you can hide this by toggling on the switch next to Settings ➝ Sounds & Haptics ➝ Show in Status Bar. How to Add Silent Mode to Control Center Silent Mode is included in the default set of controls at the top of the Control Center, but if you don't see it, you can add it manually by following these steps: * Tap the circular status bar icon to open Control Center. * Tap the plus (+) icon in the top-left corner, then tap Add a Control at the bottom of the screen. * Scroll down to the Sounds section or use the search bar to find it, then select Silent Mode. Keep in mind that Silent Mode mutes calls and alerts, but alarms and media audio still play. For scheduled quiet time, you can always set up a Focus instead.Related Roundup: iPhone DuoBuyer's Guide: iPhone Duo (Buy Now)Related Forum: iPhone This article, "Quickly Silence iPhone Duo Without a Ring/Mute Switch" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

Apple Brings TechWoven to iPad With All-New $79 iPad Mini Smart Folio

macrumors.comApple Brings TechWoven to iPad With All-New $79 iPad Mini Smart FolioApple today announced a TechWoven Smart Folio for the new iPad mini bringing its woven fabric to an iPad cover for the first time and replacing the previous, long-standing polyurethane design. With no polyurethane alternative announced, the new iPad mini looks set to become the first ‌iPad‌ since the original model in 2010 to launch without an Apple polyurethane cover option. Apple introduced the material with the ‌iPad‌ 2's Smart Cover in 2011, continuing through subsequent ‌iPad‌ Smart Covers and Smart Folios until today. The new accessory comes in Navy Blue and Taupe, complementing the ‌iPad mini‌'s Midnight and Starlight finishes. It costs $79 in the U.S., a $20 increase over the previous-generation Smart Folio. Alongside the material change, Apple has redesigned the cover with a two-panel construction. It attaches magnetically to the ‌iPad mini‌ and offers an adjustable range of viewing angles, which Apple says provides a greater range of motion and new viewing angles, for enhanced versatility. Pre-orders for the new Smart Folio begin on Wednesday, October 28, alongside the ‌iPad mini‌, with availability starting on Friday, November 6.Related Roundup: iPad miniBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPad This article, "Apple Brings TechWoven to iPad With All-New $79 iPad Mini Smart Folio" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

OLED iPad Mini Starts at $699 After Second Price Hike This Year

macrumors.comOLED iPad Mini Starts at $699 After Second Price Hike This YearApple today announced the first OLED iPad mini, and it carries a pretty hefty price increase compared to just a few years ago. The new model starts at $699, up $100 (or 17%) from the $599 starting price of the previous generation model. It's hard to believe now, but the previous-generation iPad mini kept its $499 price in 2024 even when Apple doubled base storage to 128GB. But then earlier this year, Apple increased the starting price to $599 as part of sweeping price increases across its product line owing to memory and chip shortages. The new model starts with the same 128GB of storage, so the $100 increase since June isn't offset by a capacity bump – but you do get an OLED display instead of LCD. Wi-Fi + Cellular models rise by the same $100, from $749 to $849, and education pricing starts at $649. All that being said, the price hike is less than expectations from earlier this month, when the OLED iPad mini was rumored to cost $200 more than the current model. The higher price accompanies the mini's biggest update in years, featuring that 8.5-inch OLED display, an A20 Pro chip, IP67 water and dust resistance, a new Acoustic Display speaker system, Apple's N1 wireless chip, as well as the C2 modem on cellular models. The color range though has narrowed from four finishes to two: Midnight and Starlight. There's also a new TechWoven Smart Folio that costs $79, up from $59 for the previous Smart Folio. Pre-orders for the new iPad mini open Wednesday, October 28, with availability starting Friday, November 6.Related Roundup: iPad miniTag: OLEDBuyer's Guide: iPad Mini (Coming Soon)Related Forum: iPad This article, "OLED iPad Mini Starts at $699 After Second Price Hike This Year" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums

New iPad Mini Offers Nano-Texture Display on Select Models

macrumors.comNew iPad Mini Offers Nano-Texture Display on Select ModelsApple's new iPad mini offers an optional nano-texture display for reduced glare, but the finish is limited to models with 256GB or 512GB of storage. The nano-texture glass option costs an additional $100 in the U.S., bringing the starting price to $899 for the 256GB Wi-Fi model. The entry-level 128GB model is excluded from the option. Configurations with nano-texture glass also include an Apple polishing cloth in the box. Apple says the finish is intended to improve visibility in bright environments, highlighting uses such as editing outdoors and working in the field. The option accompanies the iPad mini's switch to an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, which delivers deeper blacks and up to 1,200 nits of peak HDR brightness. Nano-texture is also offered on the iPad Pro, although it is restricted to its 1TB and 2TB configurations. As such, the ‌iPad mini‌ makes the finish available at lower storage tiers. The new display also supports 600 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content and a minimum brightness of 1 nit. Apple Pencil Pro, ‌Apple Pencil‌ (USB-C), and ‌Apple Pencil‌ hover are supported. The new ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699 for the standard-glass 128GB Wi-Fi model.
