The proliferation of 6'5" goaltenders is a symptom of not being able to accurately assess talent at amateur levels. Tall goalies get pushed through the pipeline because in the absence of verifiable performance data, the tall goalie is seen as a less-risky, defensible choice. #hockey

Can someone just deadass ask him "Which country in the Middle East do you find difficult to pronounce?" No preamble, no couching, just straight question.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance says of the Middle East that it's "a region of the world made up of countries whose name I couldn't even pronounce"

Oh fuck off. Walk and chew gum.* *This could be posturing to not scare off GOP vote switchers before 11/3, but a) that's a dumbass strategy and b) I think Dem caucus is still way behind the country in terms of wanting to kick off the FO phase of MAGA FAFO

Adam Schiff says Democrats should put 'overriding emphasis' on costs, not impeachment nbcnews.to/4iixW82

If there's one thing that can bring us all together, it's rich assholes getting comeuppance. Don't let pundits tell you Dems need to look forward. Need MNF-style weekly perp walks and a rolling counter of $ being returned to Treasury. Hell, call it a justice dividend and give X% back as a tax refund

I'm sure it's totally fine that Russia is calling in all its favors right before we have an important election. Yup. All good. Nothing to see here.

We set up an annual lottery and we create an entire civic responsibility focused cultural expectation. We make tracking impact over the year a national sport. Like a reverse Hunger Games.

I am for a very specific redistribution of wealth. We take $1B from each of the top 100 billionaires in the US. We give that money to 100 random citizens. My bet is that the goodness 90% of those people would do with more money than they know what to do with, would be incredible for humanity.

God it's so easy to make money if you have zero scruples (and you're a white dude). $250k. To ask a question at a town hall. Like you couldn't find some dude on the corner and give him a Jackson?

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

If our system of justice can determine that shooting a one year-old is justified, then we do not have a system of justice, and our goal should be the eradication of the system we have and its replacement with something better.

Ashton Pittman@ashtonpittman.bsky.social

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

They fucking droned civilians in a park today. I fucking hate this man.

Trump: "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven't been doing much."

Even if he was the right guy, hitting a person with a vehicle should be charged as assault at a minimum or attempted murder if we're actually into the whole accountability thing.

Ricardo Gonzalez, a 40-year-old U.S. citizen, was riding his e-bike in Long Beach, California, when ICE agents struck him with an unmarked vehicle and tased him twice. ICE thought he was someone else.

BREAKING NYT: Trump's new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, was fired Friday, after less than a week on the job, according to three people familiar with the matter.

If I could send this to every early-days founder I've ever met, I would. Congrats to Geoff on reaching a level of success that precious few will ever reach, and having the humility and vulnerability to be honest about what that entails.

In the USA, there are ~50 million Black people, and ~50 million immigrants. So far this year, US cops have killed 217 Black people like this. Not a typo. Two hundred and seventeen. US cops are between 10 times and 100 times more dangerous for Black people than ICE is for immigrants.

The "pay my Amex bill to avoid FinCEN attention" sure makes this arrangement feel extra legit.

1. NEW An incredible, but not surprising, story in the Wall Street Journal about Kimberly Guilfoyle, US Ambassador to Greece.

Fuck it, let him do it, then take the whole thing by eminent domain in 2029 and make it a free muni course with each tee box having a plaque describing one of his many crimes and misdemeanors. Dedicate it to getting more minorities into the sport.

Clearest indication yet that Apple is cooked. They've completely lost their internal understanding of what makes their products great.

At some point there's a floor, right? The only way this doesn't keep going down is if he materially changes his approach to the reality and we all know that ain't happening.

Yes. here you go. Trump’s approval is significantly below where it was in 2018

Dems should publicly come out and say, we are not going to waste our time fighting this, we're focused on the economy. BUT. Here's the exact text of the bill that will be passed Day 1 that removes his name/stink from everything that he touched.

In Obamacare 2.0 I want it to be illegal to use a non-public algorithm to make coverage decisions. Can't even imagine the horrendous hard coded rules these companies are using. Someone wrote that code, and if I'm going to die because of its output, I should have the right to audit it.

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!" Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.

In this vein. I saw this abomination at a gas station and was compelled to try it, if for no other reason than to understand the depths of human depravity that would conjure it.

Trump: "At one year, you should have 5 separate visits for vaccines rather than getting them all in the same day. I've seen proof of where they have a vaccination thing that looks like the size of a bottle of soda and pour it into a little child's body."

This isn't the healthy "we do things more efficiently so we can lower the price" market competition. It's a game of chicken, the winner just hopes to survive on debt long enough to be the last one standing, then jack the rates. See Uber/Lyft v taxis.

OpenAI is negotiating down your Anthropic bill more than any volume discount you could dream of. When market competition works, it *really* works.

Reaching point where codebase is growing faster than I can codify its structures in long term memory.

Yes, and the best way to to maintain a complete understanding of your code is to actually look at it. You definitely don't have to look at every line of code anymore but don't throw away your diff viewer yet.

100% The cost of writing code was a load bearing pillar that provided time for feedback and "is this worth it?" questions. Hard to fight the urge to "just build what they asked for" and end up with accolades for producing Homer-mobile-ass software.

Kevin Riggle@kevinr.free-dissociation.com

Observationally for most devs the ability to produce 10x the code means that no stakeholder need ever be consulted before an ostensibly finished product is revealed, thereby resulting in a lot of shiny bullshit that no one uses
