I really dislike the term ‘late stage capitalism’ but I don’t know how else to describe the line outside the takeout coffee place on Kärntnerstrasse that gives you a mini teddy bear with your drink.

So how did Lula come from behind to defeat Bolsonaro? In short, turnout. Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. But Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in the first round & won eliminated candidates' votes. A remarkable mobilisation. Second round turnout is usually below first.

The ingenuity and indefatigability of Serbia's student-led civic protest movement is one of the most inspirational political stories of my lifetime.

Vucic concedes defeat. The true scale of the Student List victory remains to be seen — but this a political earthquake for the Western Balkans. Sincere congratulations to the citizens of Serbia who held out hope against hope and mobilized in extraordinary numbers.

Free movement is where the rubber’s going to meet the road with this idea of a new, closer relationship with the European Union. It’s the difference between the British people wanting to rejoin in theory and what it looks like in practice.

POLITICO Europe@politico.eu

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed openness toward restarting free movement between the United Kingdom and the European Union as the two sides prepare for next month’s leaders’ summit.

Perhaps it’s my scars from 2016, but I just think there’s a difference between asking the British people, ‘Do you want a closer relationship with the EU?’ in the abstract and, in the style of the Leave campaign: ‘Do you want a bunch of young Albanian and Moldovan men moving in next door?’

Obviously all of these American and European far-right influencers were brought in by the Serbian regime ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections on Sunday. But who actually directed the operation, and how much these individuals were paid, is still worth investigating.

It says a lot about Mehdi Hasan that he thinks "the two biggest foreign policy issues of our lifetime" are "Iraq and Gaza" and not, you know, Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, its occupation of Ukraine's eastern territories, and its hybrid war against Europe.

Also, if I believed that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, the thing that would get me out of bed in the morning would be doing something to stop said genocide, not puffing my chest and yelling at a Substacker on my Zeteo show that I was right. But that's Mehdi for you.

Christmas music season is only a few days away, and I've discovered that, in Austria at least, Patti Labelle's original Christmas album "This Christmas" has been removed from service by Spotify.

Only 7,397 asylum applications were lodged in Austria in the first nine months of 2026. The largest contingents continue to come from Syria and Afghanistan. Around half of applicants were children. Per head of population, asylum application numbers in Austria have been below the EU average in 2026.

I didn't think they'd be able to do it, but the Austrian government has agreed new national rules on benefits, including changes designed to encourage asylum seekers to integrate and get into the workplace.

Interestingly, the new national rules retain the possibility that the states could offer different levels of social assistance to people with children—a discrepancy I thought the Austrian government was trying to eliminate on the basis that it created perverse incentives to go 'benefit shopping.'

If I understand this story correctly, an author pledged her royalties to a proscribed terrorist organisation, and then as a matter of precaution, she and her publisher agreed to halt distribution of her books to avoid legal liability, and this, somehow, is censorship.
