I cancelled a streaming service, and set up a $10 monthly donation to Signal instead. Thanks for the reminder, @kelseyhightower.com

Kelsey Hightower@kelseyhightower.com

I was going to ask y'all to donate to @signal.org but I had to do it first. Now that I have, please consider learning about Signal, and why privacy is important, even when you don't have anything to hide, then consider donating to help Signal continue their work. signal.org/donate

The room was packed, but it was also made to seat 8, so let's not oversell it. 🤣 I think I'm going to record a couple YT videos of the AWS and networking lessons I shared, just for posterity.

Excited for Levi McCormick’s session “AWS Networking At Scale!” This room is PACKED! #Minnebar19 @minnestar.org

Is this why some people prefer to work in an office? They can still "overhear" conversations while not being glued to a chat application all day. I'm starting to only check my chat apps at the top of the hour, and it frees up a lot of bandwidth. Gotta make sure docs are up to date, though. 🤣

Gergely Orosz@gergely.pragmaticengineer.com

About a year ago I stopped using Slack / Discord on a daily basis It’s surprising how much “headspace” I’ve gotten back While this is not an option at most workplaces: made me wonder if invasive chat applications are perhaps not always necessarily a net positive?

Having to remind sellers to not use Uline is a mark of time passing for me. This company has always supported right wing shit, never stop reminding people not to use them. There’s always new sellers who haven’t heard. Sharing how you make and sell is how we keep doing

The ideal plarform engineering team is roughly 2/3rds software oriented people with an understanding of operations, and 1/3rd operations people who can program Aka service tops and power bottoms

Been working on a project for years now, and it's almost done. I'm super proud of using a Parallel branch in an AWS Step Function as a generic wrapper to catch all the failures in the states, and dump out into a cleanup function. Shout out to @brysontyrrell.com for the idea.

I used to do IT for a manufacturing company and every day, the maintenance guy would come into the office and say "Levi the IT Guy" in a sing-songy voice. Now, I only do Cloud/DevOps work, so I changed it to Cloud Guy. Very complicated.

Lots of discussion about Bluesky and how it doesn’t have the same feeling and content as other platforms. They’re not wrong. This place still doesn’t have a lot of prominent voices from different communities across the spectrum. But it is the one social platform I feel like less of a product.

This was a good move for 37Signals, but I hate how it's being held up as the proof that *everyone* is moving back to data centers. The cloud spend data just doesn't support that statement.

Sidero@siderolabs.com

After 1 year of being out of AWS 37Signals had to update their projected savings from moving on-prem Their original savings estimate was $7M over 5 years. Their new estimate is $10M www.theregister.com/...

I had a curated list on the other site of all the #ScreamingInTheCloud guests that @quinnypig.bsky.social interviewed. I can't wait for these opportunities on this site.

Ant Stanley@iamstan.dev

I think BlueSky will be significantly better for conferences than any other site. Organisers can create speaker starter packs to allow attendees to auto-follow all speakers. Also a custom feed of all folks skeeting abut a conf would be a big win.

I need to copy the Coldwaters Law tweet before I send my account into the ether: "I've dubbed this "Coldwaters Law" after the great @lookitup.baby . Given enough published content, an expert in their field will always have their work weaponized against them by someone not realizing its origins."

I wasn't prepared to be personally attacked this early in the morning.
