“If it was our choice we wouldn’t have had the ban pass,” a 3rd-gen farmer told me about laws in NY and VT that put an end to neonic-treated seeds—despite the fact that trials of un-coated seeds show virtually no difference on yield. So why all the hullaboo? ambrook.com/offrange/leg...
1B acres of the world's forests are degraded + NY's Adirondack Park is getting chewed up, too, by invasive insect pests. How do you manage such a vast space when a state law prevents you from cutting down trees? Find out in my latest for Offrange ambrook.com/offrange/env...

Cornell police edited Jane Doe's statement. Are we in pitchforks and torches territory yet? I think we are close. "As we now know, Cornell police also condensed down Doe's statement, omitting crucial details including the fact that she said she was 100 percent confident she’d been raped."
I wrote for @thecut.com about the Cornell case and what it says that, at my institution and many others like it, protesters are often punished more harshly than sexual assailants www.thecut.com/article/what...

A Labor Day reminder: having a job is no longer enough to protect millions of Americans from homelessness. For many workers, the greatest threat isn't losing their job. It's that their job will never pay enough, never provide enough hours, never offer enough stability to keep them housed.

Edmonton adopted a harsh policy of removing encampments a few years ago, while Calgary did not. A study of the first year following that shift found a five-fold increase in emergency amputations in Edmonton over previous years with no change in Calgary's rate.
ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:
