NEW: I've been shocked by some of the numbers I've been seeing on behind-the-meter power plants for data centers, so I did a little math. less than a dozen gas plants being built to power data centers for big tech companies could emit a maximum of nearly 130 million tons of CO2e each year (!)

wired.comNew Gas-Powered Data Centers Could Emit More Greenhouse Gases Than Entire NationsA WIRED review of permits for data center projects using natural gas and linked to OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and xAI shows they could emit more than 129 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.

as a long time fan of paris's work i absolutely loved HYPERSCALE, his new book, which really pulls together so many disparate threads of the data center convo—past, present, in the us and abroad—into a ripping narrative caught up with him about it for my latest power play newsletter!

Google was really trying to hide its water use figures, to the degree that it got the council to try to keep its water use figures secret. The community finally got the actual numbers and found out Google was using 29 percent of the water in the community. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

i truly could have written 10k words on this movie lmao but honestly i fucking loved it and am still talking about it a week later. i think it's worth seeing even if you hate it! there's a lot to talk about!

done and done. my theater was nearly sold out for an 8:30pm Tuesday night screening, which seems a good sign at least that LA audiences are still finding it. really worth seeing on the big screen.

i wrote about why i think everyone (esp people working on climate) should see digger. unfortunately i had to spoil digger in order to write about digger. so do me a favor and see digger and then come back and read my review

Yep: “Digger strives to be a reflection of our current reality, where truth often doesn’t matter, and art is often funded by the very powers it rails against. While ‘Don’t Look Up’ was intended [as] a CTA, Digger simply kicks back and says: ‘This is where we are.’” apple.news/A1JmD1OakQ-y...

wired.comRural Data Centers Are in for a Big Federal Tax BreakUnder the One Big Beautiful Bill Act,  data center projects in rural areas could be eligible for major tax benefits starting next year. Some hyperscalers do not seem eager to take the free cash.

the tax break comes from new designations for opportunity zones in rural areas, passed last year explicitly to help DC construction this is also not going unnoticed in washington. sen hawley intro'ed a bill last month specifically banning dcs from taking advantage of this tax credit

interestingly, when i reached out to big tech companies asking if they planned on taking the benefits, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon all denied using the program imo it's a sign of just how hostile the landscape towards dc tax breaks has become since the passage of OBBB

NEW: Amazon announced this morning that it has stopped using NDAs in its data center agreements with local officials NDAs have been a massive flashpoint in anti-data center backlash, w local and national legislation being proposed in recent weeks to stop the practice:

wired.comAmazon Says It’s No Longer Using NDAs for Data CentersThe company announced it has stopped using secret agreements with county officials and acknowledged that community backlash is leading to data center moratoriums across the country.

in a post announcing the changes, CEO Matt Garman acknowledged how the local backlash against data centers is halting the AI buildout, and spent several paragraphs pushing back against what he calls "misinformation and outright lies” around data centers

Amazon also rolled out $1 bn in commitments to DC communities, including free community college and workforce training if you live near an Amazon data center and have thoughts about this im all ears! molly_taft@wired.com, or signal mollytaft.76

I think if you want a demo of the mechanics of how AI doom-hype detracts from the climate push, listen to this Al Gore interview w/ @heatmap.news, where he dismisses the climate impacts (using a spurious comparison, imo) but treats the chatbot doom as serious and real heatmap.news/podcast/shif...

NEW: @telliotter.bsky.social & i took a look at the intellectual split happening on the left over how to regulate AI, and whether or not to believe the companies prophesying AI catastrophe www.wired.com/story/inside...

i did a little Climate Week postmortem on data centers: co2 emissions are far & away the most alarming part of the buildout. but there hasn't been much of a reckoning beyond climate spaces kind of wondering when it'll enter the larger convo, if at all, and what that may look like

wired.comThe Data Center Backlash Should Also Be a Climate Reckoning. It Isn’t YetClimate groups are latching onto the data center opposition movement, but it remains to be seen if they can get people to care about the facilities’ impact on the atmosphere.

@mollytaft.com also highlights that for all the noise and heat from progressive circles on data centres, climate is not a high priority within the 'environment' subcategory. locals are looking at air pollution, water etc. Social media's similar. Leaves whoever's left in the climate space to care

Several people who spoke to us say that it's possible to regulate both, but exactly how involved AI companies are going to be in any new regulatory regime, and what kind of exemptions or deals may be necessary is still unclear. (see more from @regret.bsky.social) www.wired.com/story/the-ai...

wired.comThe AI ‘Slowdown’ Is an Antitrust MessBy framing their efforts as a “slowdown” rather than an industry-wide push for better security standards, AI labs may have set themselves up for years of regulatory headaches.

But on the other are organizers and experts who assert that AI is already harming people--through things like surveillance, data centers, and algorithmic bias--and that these issues should be front and center, rather than potential future issues.

NEW from me and @mollytaft.com: As politicians scramble to figure out how to regulate AI there's a divide growing on the left. On one side, there's Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is calling to regulate the existential threat of AI--the "it will kill us all" possibility. www.wired.com/story/inside...

wired.comThe Leftist Split Over AI DoomThe left wants AI regulation. They just can't agree on what it should look like or how concerned they should be.

publicly, sen bernie sanders has emerged as one of the strongest voices of ai safety in washington, and several left candidates have adopted many of his talking points but his embrace of silicon valley style ai alarm does not sit well with many leftists

"Some of us are looking at Bernie and saying, what happened?” one NYC DSA member says AI-wary DSA members say the question is whether or not to trust the ai companies when it comes to regulations: to focus on a catastrophic future vs what ai is doing right now
